Hoo’s Pickin’ – 4218 Old Hundred Road; 804-624-0086; Facebook.com/HoosPickin
This is your store for home décor. You’ll discover old and new vintage-inspired products. Enjoy browsing the rustic knick knacks, homemade items, as well as shabby chic and farmhouse furnishings. The store is open seven days a week and delivery service is available.
She Chester – 4157 Celebration Ave.; 804-717-5305; ShopSheChester.comI had heard so many good things about this cool fashion and jewelry boutique in Chester
Village Green. Bridget Shindel, who operates the store with her father, Paul, tells me that her mother, Mary, started the business in 2007. At the time, it was locat-ed across from its current location and was called “Just the Thing.” After her mothers’ death in 2015, she and her father continued to operate the store, which moved into its current location in October 2019. Choose from a wide selection of ladies’ apparel, including Simply Southern products. You’ll also find clothing and toys for babies and kids. Bridget says the store carries jewel-ry from Kendra Scott and Alex and Ani. “We try to have something for everyone,” she adds.
She Chester opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Sat-urday. On Sundays, it opens from 1 to 5 p.m.
Herb Closet – 6520 Iron Bridge Road, N. Chesterfield; 804-377-1690Sandra Crissman and Donna Lew-is have been running this store since 1996. They have been in their current location for 18 years. Donna says that both ladies were looking for answers to health issues and discovered natu-ropathy. She describes the place as a natural herb supplement shop. “We sell everything from local, unprocessed honey to tea to supplements,” she says. “We also carry rocks and stones for those who are interested.” The aromas that permeate this little shop make for a calming, relaxing visit and, yes, you can purchase aromatherapy products there, as well.
Search Facebook “Herb Closet Chesterfield.” That will take you right to their page.
Jeweler’s Services, Inc. – 6523 Centralia Road; 804-353-9612; J-S-I.comWhen you shop for fine jewelry, you want personalized service from experienced and professional experts. That’s exactly what you will find at Jeweler’s Ser-vices, Inc. Julie LaPrad, who owns the business along with Katie O’Neil, tells me that the small staff relocated this custom jewelry store from Carytown to Chesterfield when the original owner retired several years ago. “Our staff has over 140 years of experience in working with Jeweler’s Services,’ she says.
Among these experienced jewelers, you’ll find creative designers who can offer cus-tomized and one-of-a-kind pieces. You’ll also find diamonds as well as other precious and semi-precious stones. Choose from a wide selection of rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings in platinum, gold and silver, plus there’s a nice selection of estate jewelry, as well. Jeweler’s Services also offers repairs and remounts.
The store is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (‘til 6 p.m. on Tuesdays). Learn more at their website.

WHAT A MESS! Organize Your Home for 2021
by Kari Smith
As calendar pages flip over at the end of the year, many start thinking of resolutions and goals for the coming New Year. Organization is at the top of many lists, and for good reason—the beginning of the year is the perfect time for a fresh start!
It can be overwhelming to think of organizing your whole home, so choose one project to tackle each weekend, and finish that project before beginning a new one.
Closets Try on clothing and shoes and set aside pieces that no longer fit or are no longer in style. Consider visiting a consignment shop to turn high-end pieces into cash, or donate items in good condition to a local charity.
If an overstuffed closet makes it difficult to see what you have each day, consider storing seasonal clothing in under-bed storage bins.
GarageYour garage does not have to be a neglected “catch-all” space. Start by removing all trash and items that are no longer used. Schedule a “dump run” for the day that you clean, so that your discard pile is gone immediate-ly after you finish organizing.
Make the investment in plas-tic totes to store your items. Use
clear totes if you want to be able to see contents quickly. Keep a tote for each category of items (i.e. camping, holiday décor, painting supplies, sports equipment, etc.) and place the bins that you will use most often in the easiest-to-reach place.
Laundry RoomA common laundry room struggle is space. Remove any items that do not belong in the laundry room, as clut-ter will make a small space feel even smaller. Consider cabinetry or open shelving with baskets to store clean-ing supplies. Consider installing a space-saving wall-mounted laundry drying Rack for air-drying clothes.
PantryA simple first step is to throw out expired food. Donate food that you may not use before its expi-ration date to a family in need or a local food pan-try. Invest in space-saving canisters that best fit your pantry shelves. Consider using bins or baskets for items such as cereal bars, oatmeal packets, snacks,
seasoning packets, and other small items.Overwhelmed by the process? I spoke with Hugh Toland, at Closets by Design (116 Syl-
via Road) in Ashland about how they can help. “We can come into your home for a free, no obligation consultation. Our goal is to give you a design solution and price in the same day,” he tells me. Closets by Design uses a melamine product – a durable, industrial-grade parti-cleboard that comes in many colors and is easy to clean. Check out closetsbydesign.com for ideas and inspiration. They also do more than just closets.
For many, mess equals stress. Simplifying and organizing your life is a worthwhile invest-ment into your family: the less time you spend looking for things when you need them, the more time you can put into fulfilling those other goals and resolutions. Happy 2021!

RECIPE
FROM ANDREA’S KITCHEN ITALIAN WEDDING SOUP
by Andrea Woodson
This month’s recipe is Italian Wedding Soup. This soup is the Italian equivalent of chicken noodle soup. My grandfather came over to America from Italy in 1906, so authentic Italian food was something we enjoyed growing up. I guess for that reason,
it will always be my true comfort food. Wedding soup has nothing to do with weddings. It gets its name from the Ital-ian phrase minestra maritata meaning “married soup” and refers to the mar-riage of the flavors of the vegetables and meat, its main ingredients. I hope you enjoy this ultimate comfort dish!
INGREDIENTSMeatballs1 small onion1/3 cup Italian parsley1 large egg1/2 cup Parmesan cheese8 oz. ground beef8 oz. ground pork or ground lamb1/2 cup breadcrumbs 2 cloves of garlic, crushed1/2 teaspoon of salt1/4 teaspoon of pepper
Soup12 cups of low sodium chicken broth 1 pound of Escarole or baby spinach can be substituted1 cup of dry Acini de Pepe or orzo pasta3/4 cup of celery1 cup of onion, diced
PREPARATIONCombine all ingredients for the meatballs together and roll small meatballs about the size of an inch or smaller and place on a parchment lined sheet pan.
Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to a Dutch oven or stockpot and sauté the onion and celery until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the chicken broth and bring to a boil. While boiling add in your escarole or spinach, uncooked meatballs and pasta. Simmer on medium heat for 20-25 minutes or until meatballs are done and pasta is al dente.
Top with fresh Parmesan cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Serve with toasted crusty bread and buon appetito!

Locked Down But Not Locked In
So you’re stuck at home? Here’s a way to get unstuck. You can still remain in the safety and comfort of your own home, but use the time to visit some of the nation’s and the world’s
great cities, museums and other noteworthy attractions. Here are a few suggestions. All Creatures Great and Small (Explore.org) It may not be all creatures, but if you’re in awe of the beauties of creation, what a wonderful site this is. From African watering holes to Atlan-tic sharks, watch the fascinating creatures live and (virtually) in person. Forget the simulated reality of video games and travel the world. WARNING: This site can be addictive.
City Walking Tours (Travel.earth) Hop on the treadmill and take a fascinating walking tour of London, Paris, Ven-ice, St. Petersburg, Midtown Manhattan and more. If you’ve always wanted to see the world, this is a pretty decent op-portunity to do so, while maintaining all the social distanc-ing you could ever desire.
Disney’s World (DisneyParks.Disney.Go.com) Visit Disney World, Disneyland, Disney’s Hollywood Studio, Epcot and more. To create the 360-degree imagery at the various Dis-ney attractions, Google used Street View Trekker, a wearable backpack with a camera system on top. The Trekker is worn by an operator and is moved through walkways and structures, automatically gathering images. Imagery is then stitched to-gether to create the 360-degree panoramas accessible at this site. It may not be as much fun, but it’s a lot less expensive.
Georgia Aquarium (GeorgiaAquarium.org) There’s something fishy about this website. There are alligators, penguins and whales, too. (Free) Google’s Art and Culture (ArtsAndCulture.Google.com) The homepage of this fascinating site asks the question, “What kind of adventure are you up for?” Your options are virtually endless (pun somewhat intended). Choose from art, science, music and history adventures. Online exhibits allow you to discover the true story of President Lincoln’s assassination at the Ford Theater in Washington, D.C. Take your family on a tour of the world famous Sydney Opera House. Climb the Eiffel Tower. See the Mona Lisa up close on a virtual tour of the Louvre. There are literally hundreds of exhibits and tours. Use Google’s Arts and Culture site as a launching pad Head to the Beach (LiveBeaches.com) If you’re wondering what’s going on at the beach this time of year, this is the site for you. Discover links to live beach cams from Virginia Beach and Acadia National Park on the Atlantic to Waikiki in the Pacific. Dozens of beaches have live cams on this site.
International Space Station (NASA.gov/Mission) Wow! This is a cool one. Take guided tours of the Space Station. Everything you’ve ever want-ed to know about living in zero gravity but were afraid to ask – unless you’re a kid. Discover how astronauts sleep, brush their teeth, even use the bathroom. You gotta see this one.
Pure Michigan (Michigan.org/VirtualTravel) For rugged, raw beauty, few states can equal what Michigan has to offer. If your only image of Michigan is Detroit (which is actually a pret-ty cool city), then you really don’t know this state. The website offers live cams and fantastic 360° videos. San Diego Zoo (Kids.SanDiegoZoo.com) Live streaming cameras give you an opportunity to get a close-up look at a variety of animals in the zoo, including apes, giraffes, hippos, koalas and more. Of course, as is true with a personal trip to the zoo, sometimes the animals are more active than at other times. This fascinating site offers stories, games and other activities for the young and the young at heart. We’ve barely scratched the surface. Do a little Googling and who knows what exciting tours and live cams you might discover. Staying home never felt so fun.
