Despite leading the entire gameTuesday, the Baldwin High Schoolgirls basketball didn’t put away itsfirst-round contest of the WellsvilleTop Gun Tournament against St.Marys Bears until the waning min-utes.

The Bulldogs had leads of fromthree to seven points throughout thegame, but St. Marys managed to comeback whenever Baldwin seemed readyto build a comfortable advantage.

“I just told the girls, I think wefought ourselves as much as we foughtthem,” Baldwin coach Bob Martinsaid of his team’s 49-40 win. “Wefinally did some things to win thegame. That’s want is important — sur-vive and go on.”

Baldwin appeared to put the gameaway with 2:18 to play in the thirdquarter when junior Katie Kehlrebounded blocked shot in the laneand scored, giving the Bulldogs itslargest lead of the game at 32-25. TheBears’ top scorer, sophomore ClareThomas, was injured on the play anddidn’t return to the game after beingcarried from the floor.

St. Marys senior center Mary-RoseEakes scored inside on the next pos-session, swiping the momentum fromthe Bulldogs, and the two teams werescoreless the remainder of the period.

After a St. Marys made free throwearly in the fourth quarter, Kehl onceagain worked the offensive boards fora second-chance basket with 6:50 toplay in the final quarter. Two posses-sions later, Bulldog junior KailynSmith seemed to finally put the gameout of reach with a 3-pointer that gaveBaldwin a 39-31 lead.

Once again, St Marys answered thechallenge, scoring five-straight pointsand cutting the lead to 39-36 with3:10 to play.

points the rest of the game, and Bald-win hit 6-of-8 free throws in the finaltwo minutes as the Bears fouled in an

attempt to regain the ball.

The Bonner Springs boys basketballteam weathered several runs, but ulti-mately held Baldwin at bay, winning47-32 in the final of the Baldwin Invi-tational tournament.

The story of the game was defenseas the Braves aggressive man-to-manforced 20 Baldwin (8-3) turnovers andheld the Bulldogs to just two points inthe third quarter.

“We emphasized holding onto theball,” Baldwin coach Dustin Leochersaid. “We talked about that before theballgame. Obviously, we didn’t dothat.”

The Bulldogs had difficulty scoringall night, and after scoring the game’sfirst two points on two free throws,quickly fell behind when BonnerSprings (8-3) went on an 11-1 run.

Although Baldwin would never

make up that opening deficit, it camewithin a 3-point basket of tying thescore on several occasions after theBraves had established leads of eight-and seven-points.

“It was a competitive game,” Loech-ner said. “It was more competitivethan the final score would indicate.”

Bonner Springs coach Andy Priceagreed, praising the Bulldogs’ defense.

“During timeouts, our guys saidthey were frustrated because theycouldn’t do want they wanted onoffense,” he said.

Price pointed to the eight seniors onhis club and the many sophomoresplaying important minutes for theBulldogs.

“They’d been there before,” he saidof his seniors. “I think that was thedifference.”

The Bulldogs got off to a good start,leading 17-12 at the end of the firstquarter on Jones and Smith’s outsideshooting and Kehl and junior JessieKatzer’s work on the offensive glass.

“The offensive rebounds started usoff well,” Kehl said. “We worked real-ly hard all game. It was a tough game,especially with all the injuries..”

Baldwin’s Jones temporarily left thegame wit an arm injury near the endof the first half.

Baldwin saw it five-point lead dwin-dle in the second quarter as it strug-gled to score and turned the ball overagainst St. Marys press and trappingzone defense. The Bears cut the Bull-dogs’ lead to 19-17 before Kehl scoredthe team’s first field goal of the periodwith 3 minutes remaining.

The Bulldogs will next play the win-ner of the Wellsville-Bonner Springsgame at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. BonnerSprings is the tournament’s top seed,undefeated and ranked seventh inKansas 4A.

The Baldwin High School wrestingteam prepped for a big week with itsannual Cats and Dogs Dual againstBurlington.

On Jan. 19, the Bulldogs emergedvictorious, 44-27, in the competitiveevent that matched the state-s sixth-rated 4A squad, Burlington, againstseventh-rated Baldwin.

Powering the Bulldogs to the winwere Bryce Shoemaker at 126 pounds,

Andrew Morgan at 132 pounds, MarkHarman at 170 pounds, Tiler Garcia at195 pounds and Colton Bonner at 220pounds.

Shoemaker, Morgan, Harman andGarcia all won by falls. Bonner defeat-ed Burlington’s Tanner Taylor 2-1 inovertime.

The Bulldogs will have a dual withK.C. Piper starting at 3:30 today. Thejunior high school gym will be set upfor an all-school pep rally just beforethe start the event with the wrestlersstarting action with its conclusion.

The on Saturday, the team will bethe host of the Baldwin InvitationalTournament at the junior high gym.

Action in the 16-team Tournamentwill start at 8:30 a.m.

Baldwin coach Kitt Harris said histeam will face stiff competition in thetournament and it will be a greatopportunity for fans to support theteam and enjoy quality high schoolwrestling.

Tonganoxie, Spring Hill and Lans-ing will be among the 4A teams thatwill vie for the title and be Baldwin’scompetition in the regional nextmonth, Harris said.

In addition, the always good OakPark, Mo., team will be returningagain this year.

A pair of three-point shots by Jor-dan Jackson and J.J. Jackson, the lat-ter one falling with 3:20 to play, onceagain gave the Braves a comfortablecushion. Bonner Springs then startedrunning the clock on offense forcingBaldwin to foul.

The strategy was without benefit asBrett Steuart, who Price said had strug-gled at the line before the tourna-ment, hit six free throws.

Steuart and teammate B.J. Watsonwere named to the 10-member all-tournament team, as were C. Brownand Gaylord of Baldwin. Others sohonored were Jason Stoneking,Anderson County, Brandt Patterson,Augusta, C.J. Vallejo, Bishop Ward,Jack Steadman, K.C. Christian andAustin Johanning, Perry-Lecompton.

Baldwin will have nearly a week ofpractice before playing Friday atOsawatomie.
