32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time YR B 10/11 November 2018
1 Kings 17:10-16; Hebrews 9:24-28; Mark 12: 38-44
HOW GENEROUS AM I?
Giving is not something that comes easy and naturally most of the time. For one to give means that something has to be lost. There must be a cost. There is a level of sacrifice that comes with it. If we search properly, there could always be a reason or a ‘good’ not to give. This weekend in our readings, we are presented with the stories of two widows who have a lot to teach us in this regard. The first is the encounter between Elijah and the widow of Zarephat (1 Kings 17:10-16). This encounter is very unique as this woman who was obviously struggling with the loss of her husband had also to deal with the fact that there was not enough food for her and her child to survive on. They just wanted to eat this last piece that they had and then hope for the best (probably death). With all these happening in her life, a stranger (Elijah) comes forward asking for some food and drink. This woman had all the reasons in the world to not share the little they had but she trusted in God and the message from the prophet to not be afraid. This story ended well because they all had enough to eat. The second widow from the gospel of Mark chapter 12 did exactly the same thing, where she put in ‘all that she had’ (which wasn’t a lot) into the treasury at the Synagogue (for the common good). These two women trusted in the God who always gives us more. When we give, we actually receive more. It doesn’t matter how little it is. Obviously these are not all about money and food. The list of what we have been given that we need to share can go on and on. It could be our gifts, our time, our talents etc. We don’t have to have a lot to give. There is a tendency to think that people that give have more than they need, we may actually have more than them (if we look closely). So in the coming week, the challenge is for us to honestly look into ourselves and ask the questions: HOW GENEROUS AM I? SHOULD I BE GIVING MORE? IS MY LIFE ALL ABOUT ME? AM I WAITING TILL I HAVE EXCESS TO GIVE? If we are not careful, we can end up making the God who has bestowed us with what we have a liar by not using them for His glory.
