Jacob’s Well
September 2018 The readings for the month of September are based on the lectionary for the Season of Creation, a season of the church year (like Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter or Pentecost) which celebrates God as Creator and invites every worshiper to consider his or her relationship to creation. The Season of Creation is consisdered “optional” but there is no other season which focuses in the same way on God as Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of the universe.

From the Pastor… Ever since the creation of the world, God’s eternal power and divine nature,
invisible though they are,
have been understood and seen through the things God has made.”
Romans 1:20 NRSV
Dear Members and Friends of Old Saratoga,
Greetings in the grace and peace of Christ.
Earlier this month, when I was at the funeral home to lead a memorial service, one of the family members of the one departed noticed the cross I was wearing around my neck. It’s a cross I’ve
been wearing for several decades, but few people ever really ask about it. So I was surprised when this individual came over to say, “I like your Celtic cross,” and then asked me why I wear a
Celtic cross. I was happy to explain that for me, the Celtic cross is a reminder of the love of God in Christ
and the sacredness of all creation. The ancient Celtic religion in Europe, which preceded Christianity by some 900 years, held a deep respect for the earth and its creatures, the trees
and plants, the cycles and seasons. Their life, religious traditions and worldview, were closely tied to the creation. When Christianity came along, many of the old Celtic spiritual ways were prohibited or lost. But thankfully, there has been a survival of the Celtic spiritual wisdom, and
today there are people who know themselves as Celtic Christians, who hold deeply to the sanctity of creation and its relationship to the God of Life. I wear the Celtic cross because I believe that my life- and all our lives- are inseparably bound to God’s creation; and if we want to grow in wisdom and love, it is good to learn in part, “through
the things God has made.” Rom.1:20) Often in his own teaching, Jesus pointed to things in creation to help others understand the divine nature of God. With this in mind, and the present concern for the health of the Planet Earth, you may be interested to know that on the Sundays of September 9,16,23 and 30, we will be following the
Season of Creation lectionary in our worship. This will be the third year that we have celebrated the Season of Creation. On the first page of this newsletter you can find the themes
and scripture readings for each of these Sundays. In our worship of God as the Loving Creator, we hope and pray that our relationship with God
and all that God has made will grow in reverence, wisdom and gratitude.
As the seasons change, and autumn draws near, may we look to God to teach us what we need to know about faith and life “through the things God has made.”
Faithfully yours,
Pastor Joyce deVelder

The church family extends sympathy in Christ
to the family of George William Cromie, 83,
who died on Aug. 4 in Deltona, FL, where he
and his wife Margaret had lived for the past
16 years. Mr. Cromie’s parents, Roland and
Angela Cromie, were active members of Old
Saratoga many years ago. George, at the
age of 13, joined Old Saratoga in May, 1948,
by confirmation of faith. He graduated from
Schuylerville Central School in 1952, and
went on to work for many years for the NY S
Dept. of Transportation. He is survived by his
wife Margaret, and their three children, John,
William and Anastasia and their families. A

when people are away on vacation and not
able to attend worship.
CONSISTORY NEWS
At its August meeting, the consistory
accepted, with regret, the resignation of
Elder Paulette Foote, who resigned due to
health issues. The consistory members
thanked her for her past years of service.
Paulette hopes to continue chairing the
Property Committee and singing in the choir.
The consistory will wait to fill her vacancy until
November, when the church holds elections
of elders and deacons at our meeting 11/18.
OUR 3rd QUARTER MISSION
Mariposa DR Foundation
We will be receiving donations for the
Mariposa DR Foundation through the months
of July, August and September. The Mariposa
DR Foundation was founded in 2009 in
Cabarete, in the Dominican Republic (DR)
with the goal of helping women and girls find
their way out of poverty. Girls from the
Dominican Republic (and neighboring Haiti)
come to Mariposa (which means “butterfly”)
to receive education and learn work skills,
such as sewing.

HYMNS OF OUR FAITH “Sing to the Lord, you saints of his: praise his holy
name.” Psalm 30:4
“My Tribute”
“To God be the glory, to God be the glory,
To God be the glory for the things he has done.
With his blood he has saved me; with his power he has
raised me
To God be the glory for the things he has done.”
Andre Crouch, contemporary musician and
composer, took a cue from a famous hymn writer
of the 19th century and used it as a basis for a
modern day chorus of praise.
In the 1870s, Fanny Crosby wrote the hymn “To
God Be the Glory.” Despite being blind from
shortly after birth, Crosby wrote some 8,000 hymns
and gospel songs with over 100 million copies
printed, probably making her the most prolific
hymn writer of all time. Common themes of her
hymns were redemption through Jesus’ sacrifice,
and the hope for eternal life in God’s presence.
Andrae Crouch (1945-2015) was a songwriter,
pianist, arranger, record producer and pastor.
Contemporaries referred to Crouch as the “father
of modern gospel music.” Crouch picked up on
the first verse of Crosby’s hymn and wrote a
glorious chorus of praise which he entitled “My
Tribute,” which reiterates Fanny Crosby’s theme,
but also echoes Psalm 29:2: “Ascribe to the Lord
the glory due to his name.” Like Crosby’s hymn,
“My Tribute” confesses two essential doctrines of
the Christian faith; salvation through Christ’s
atoning sacrifice and new life to all believers in
Christ’s resurrection.
All too often, our approach to God in prayer is to
first petition for the things we want from God;
telling about our situation, our needs, our desires.
We ought first to recall the “great things God has
done,” as both Crosby and Crouch remind us in
their hymns and choruses. Our first words in
prayer should echo Psalm 29:2, ascribing to the
Lord the glory due his name.
The psalmist David wrote, “It is good to praise the
Lord and make music to your name, O Most High,
proclaiming your love in the morning and your
faithfulness in the night.” (Psalm 92: 1-2 NIV)

WORSHIP COMMITTEE NEWS The Worship Committee, in an effort to keep worship fresh, has made several changes in our service.
We have already begun to have “Prayers of the People” on the last Sunday of the month, when three people of the congregation offer the Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession. Members of the committee have modeled the format, but we will be asking for volunteers to take a turn. You would only need to write three or four sentences for one of three parts: Thanksgiving, Intercession for those in the church, community and world, and Intercession for the wider church.
Beginning in October, we will be using an updated version of the Lord’s Prayer, so that it is not a “rote” prayer, but will cause us to think more about what we are praying. At the end of December, evaluation of the congregation’s feedback will determine whether we continue to use it. It will be printed each week in the Sunday bulletin, as follows:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
Now that we have our new sound system, liturgists are asked to stay after worship on September 16 to try out the microphone to see how to project their voices so that everyone is able to hear the Scripture.

dinners, etc.
PROPERTY COMMITTEE REPORT
The Property Committee reports that this
summer the floor in Loomis Hall has been
cleaned, waxed and buffed, the lift was
inspected, and the parsonage north porch
roof has been replaced. Doug Sheely has
completed work on both the stairs into the
parsonage. Both of the parsonage chimneys
will be repointed later on in the fall.
Additionally, several sheets of Lexan will be
installed in the near future over the priceless
stained glass windows, replacing the old
plexiglass.
This summer our insurance carrier sent an
inspector to evaluate our “insurability”. He
was very complimentary about the condition
of the building. The committee thanks the
consistory and the congregation for being so
supportive of all the recent projects which
were undertaken. They especially are
grateful to Mr. P. Richard Bauer, whose
generous bequest to the church made
possible all the updates and improvements
that have been done. The next meeting will be Sept. 10 at 7pm
NO FALL GARAGE SALE
We will not be having our Fall Garage Sale
this year on the weekend of the town wide
sale. (9/15) If you had planned on donating
your “treasures” to the church, we have a
solution for you! Notre Dame –Visitation will
be having a sale on Sept. 15 and will take
donations in their garage (no clothing or
electronics!!!) beginning in late July.
However, we will be having our Annual
December Holiday Sale (12/1) and will gladly
be accepting donations of holiday items
later in the fall.
HELP FOR THE GIVING CIRCLE
A few weeks ago we learned about the
urgent need of The Giving Circle for $75,000
in funds to address a situation in Uganda
where, in 2009,they had started an
orphanage (the Koi Koi House) for children.
They recently learned it will be shut down for
political reasons by the government, along
with other orphanages in the country. There
are currently about 20 children who call the
Koi Koi House “home.”
The Giving Circle also runs Busoga School on
land it owns. If they can build a boarding
house addition onto the school, it will
provide a safe and loving environment for
the children who have lived in the
orphanage – and for others who will come.
Currently, boarding schools are acceptable
to the government.
We are happy to report that, as of the end
of August, The Giving Circle has collected
$63,000 in just a short time. They are still
$12,000 short of their goal. The Deacons of
Old Saratoga voted to give $1000 to the
boarding school project from our Bottle and
Can Mission Fund, which has already been
gratefully received by The Giving Circle.
If you, the members and friends of Old
Saratoga, would like to make a personal
donation toward this urgent and worthy
project to help the children, you can do so
through the church. Checks can be made
to OSRC, earmarked “The Giving Circle.” We
will be collecting donations through the
month of September. Our treasurer, Chris
Garney, will send to total donation in early
October.
Thank you for all your help and prayers for
the compassionate work of The Giving
Circle. For more information, go to their
website.

501 ( c ) 3 not for profit organization run by
volunteers and co-founded by Mark and
