For someone (like me) living alone and in over his head with a new house and fading funds, jack
was the perfect neighbor. this was back in the early 1990s, at the tail end of another recession,
when i was near broke and desperate to carve out a little writing time away from teaching and
the absurd social demands of city life. jack was the guy waving hello from his driveway next
door, always working away in his garden, busy giving orders to a small army of mostly young
people traipsing in and out of his beautifully designed house next door. i had no idea that he and
his partner, joel dean, were the creators of the store in soHo that i loved so much, or why there
always seemed to be a photographer taking pictures of them and their house. When jack
knocked on my front door while i was trying to write i wasn’t exactly welcoming. i was, if i remember
correctly, preoccupied, anxious, and impatient.
He didn’t seem to mind. in fact, he seemed to be enjoying a situation others would find awkward.
this was my introduction to a quality i’ve always envied about him. With prescience and a refined
intuition he learns people quickly. in fact, he seemed to know more about me than i did. i was a
writer, a bit jumpy, easily perturbed, someone who needed to prepare himself to be social. Freud
tells us that we’re cured when we can see ourselves as others do almost immediately. though
only one of us was gracious, and at home in his observations, jack must’ve decided that i was
worth the trouble.
the art of recognizing and respecting boundaries is only one of jack’s qualities. Perhaps it
requires the kind of keenness of observation and objective sensitivity that goes into original
design and portraits. i’ve known many artists but never one who so completely designed every
aspect of his world. From his house to his dress, to the food he eats and the brushes, oils and
canvases he paints on, the details of his life feels both ordained and fully realized. visiting him
for dinner isn’t unlike looking at one of his portraits. You’re visiting his perception of a world
entirely his own, one in which you feel privileged and welcomed, appreciated and recognized.
Within what seemed only a few fleeting moments after our first meeting, i had a dog, a wife (the
sculptor Monica banks) pregnant with our second son, a new book, and while jack now lived in
a new beautifully designed house around the corner, he was our close friend who, seeing we
needed a new addition to our house, drew on the back of a napkin a design that would become
our new home. it wasn’t unlike one of his portraits, inspiration filtered through a prism of
instinct and hospitality. Yes, jack, who helped change the idea of contemporary design, also
designed and supervised the construction of our future.
and if i’d been more welcoming that spring day when he knocked on my door? it’s not a question
i can comfortably answer. but ask jack, who would know the answer. Philip schultz
Philip schultz, the founder and director of the Writers studio, won the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in
2008. He lives in east Hampton, nY with his wife, the sculptor Monica banks, and their two sons.
