1 30208 Off-Bottom Oyster Aquaculture: An Emergent Coastal Aquaculture Industry
A monumental decline in oyster landings in Apalachicola Bay, where the majority of the state’s oyster fishery is based, was reported in 2012 and has continued to present. In 2014, water column aquaculture leases for use of off-bottom oyster gear was approved by the Florida Agriculture and Consumer Agency (FDACS). With decreased supplies from the fisheries, higher dockside prices, and removal of regulatory constraints, interest in oyster aquaculture has soared with over 125 farms operating in 10 coastal counties. Purpose or Objectives: 1) To introduce IFAS Extension and research faculty to the latest information on oyster aquaculture in Florida. In addition, an assessment of the current research, demonstration and extension activities being conducted by university programs and available resources will be provided. 2) To meet and interact with IFAS research and Extension faculty collaborating on projects in support of the oyster farming industry. 3) To facilitate an ongoing interaction among members of the Florida Sea Grant aquaculture work action group, fostering a more informed view of the diverse aquaculture commodities in Florida.

1 31761 Emerging Agricultural Enterprises Summit
The diverse state of Florida has more than
300 commodities. Given our changing
climate, tropical storms, disease pressures,
volatile markets, low commodity prices, and
other factors, our stakeholders now more
than ever need alternative crop and
enterprise options for the varying regions of
the state. UF/IFAS has been a leader in this
area with innovative research and extension
programs in many areas. UF/IFAS has a
critical mass of faculty that are investigating
alternative enterprises, however, up until
now, there has not had a large-scale training
event with the expressed purpose of
summarizing our state of knowledge of
emerging agricultural enterprises and
strategizing the best way forward to address
the research and extension needs of those
enterprises. Deans Rob Gilbert and Nick
Place have been integral and supportive of
the initial planning and implementation of
this Summit. The Summit has been planned
by a faculty-driven process through planning
and steering committee activities.

1 31796 Economic Value, Contribution, and Impact: Understanding how economic terms and tools are and should be used in agriculture
Quantifying the economic value and communicating the importance of agriculture-related industries are often key components of Cooperative Extension activities. However, the variety of economic metrics available and the complexity of tools from which they are often derived can make interpretation and communication difficult. The objective of this IST is to provide participants a greater understanding of economic terms and methods as it relates to agriculture-related industries, with a focus on how economic metrics can be used to justify, improve, and evaluate Cooperative Extension programs. The intended audience would be faculty and Cooperative Extension faculty interested in using economic metrics to describe or evaluate their programs and to improve communication with stakeholders. Specifically, attendees will complete the IST knowing how to (1) use the correct economic metrics to describe their programs, (2)describe the economic importance of the programs they work on, and (3) plan evaluations for economic aspects of projects.

1 31811 Peanut Agronomic In-Service Training
Florida is the second, sometimes third highest peanut producing state behind Georgia in the United States depending on Alabama’s production. In 2018, USDA reported Florida’s planted acreage as 155,000 acres. Those acres account for much of the agronomic production in North Florida, ranging from the Panhandle down to just south of Ocala. Extension specialists with peanut responsibilities along with the regional agents have formed a Florida Peanut Team to more directly impact faculty education and training for this crop. The purpose of this IST is continued education and training, both for veteran agents and new Extension Faculty. Whether it is a peanut corn rotation in Suwannee Valley, or a peanut cotton rotation in the Panhandle, peanut crops are a staple for agronomic farms in North Florida. Specialists will discuss how to best respond to field calls and site visits pertaining to this widely grown crop with a focus on weed, insect, disease, fertility, and variety management. The objective is to increase the County Extension Faculty’s knowledge regarding the growth habit and physiology of this crop, as well as familiarity with the best management practices associated with its production. Faculty receive calls ranging from seed quality and variety performance, product use and rotation, and maturity

1 31813 Navigating Florida’s Commercial Citrus Industry as a Fruit Crops or Alternative Crops Agent
It has been determined there are several needs facing agents working with the commercial Florida Citrus Industry:
• Agents need a citrus production refresher concerning current horticultural practices, pests, diseases, and the economics of the industry in times of Huanglongbing and other diseases. For some agents, citrus is not their “first” crop that they serve.
• There have been many changes to citrus production practices in recent years. It is important that agents are familiar with new recommendations and have a chance to discuss any concerns that may arise.
• Current citrus/fruit crop/alternative crop agents do not have a collective plan as to common policies and procedures when serving citrus producers.
• Attending this IST will assist agents in acquiring further training, meeting the following Priority Competency Areas (as described in EDIS Documents AEC574, “Priority Competencies Needed by UF/IFAS Extension County Faculty” by Dr. Amy Harder):

1 31829 Helping Beginning Farmers Access Land for Farming
Extension agents are often asked to assist beginning farmers with various aspects of starting or expanding their farms. According to USDA, “two of the biggest challenges facing new farmers and ranchers are access to land and access to capital” (https://newfarmers.usda.gov/access-land-and-capital). Few extension agents have any formal training on those topics. This IST will serve the need for training agents on ways to assist clients with these two challenges. We will review the land access curriculum developed by American Farmland Trust and the resources they provide. We will cover the topics of (1) farming goals, (2) financial readiness & access to capital, (3) land tenure options, (4) finding & evaluating available land, and (5) lease and purchase agreements. We also will discuss possible future Extension programming. By attending this webinar, agents will improve their ability to help beginning farmers make informed land-access decisions and secure land for farming.

3 31799 Civic Skill Building: Community Conversations and Issue Assessment with Small Farmers
Faculty are hesitant to work with communities on potential controversial issues, especially with traditionally underserved communities. In some cases, faculty may not know how to meet needs until they know more about what those needs are, from the perspective of the farmers. One type of CIVIC program engages community members in listening sessions, roundtables, and world café sessions to facilitate discussions that can help direct new programs. This CIVIC IST will build faculty skills to do this work AND model a real program with real farmers. FAMU faculty intend to use these data and findings
