The Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry was made between 1067- 1070, a few years after the Battle of Hastings. It shows the full story of the Battle of Hastings from Edward the Confessor to how William became King of England.

The first written record of the Bayeux Tapestry is in 1476 when it was recorded in the cathedral treasury at Bayeux as a very long and narrow hanging on which are embroidered figures and inscriptions.

Wool was sown onto cloth to show the important events of 1066. It is thought that William’s half brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux paid local women to make the tapestry. This can still be seen today!
