August 2015 I was truly honored to be able to represent San Diego Chapter 11 at the recent Annual Educa on Conference held at the Hilton
Bayfront in downtown San Diego. Interna onal couldn’t have asked for a be er run conference. With the help of all of our amazing volunteers, the “behind the scenes” ac vi es ran flawlessly. My thanks to all of our incredible staff of volunteers that showed up to stuff bags on a Friday night, man the registra on booths throughout the conference, and fill in the necessary gaps by being part of the flag ceremony or running around changing out poster boards at the appointed mes! Our Chapter and Region volunteers were outstanding! And of course, Nick and Joe gave stellar performances as the Blues and then the News Brothers! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who were part of “San Diego 2015”! We will be celebra ng our Chapter’s 60th Anniversary at the upcoming August Luncheon!!! Woo Hoo!!! What a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all of the changes that have taken place in the last 60 years. Veteran IRWA members and fellow Chapter 11 Board Members, Carolyn Lee, SR/WA, R/W‐RAC and William MacFarlane, SR/WA, will walk us down Memory Lane! Professionally we have all been, in some part, responsible for many of the changes that have made San Diego such a popular place to live and visit. For this one day, we have rolled back the price of our luncheon to $12.00, so please join us on August the 19th for our Anniversary celebra on. As we start the next year of ac vity for our Chapter, I want to encourage those who want to become more involved in our chapter to please let me know. We s ll have vacant posi ons on our board that need to be filled. All are welcome and you’ll find a group that encourages new voices and ideas. Instructor: Georgia Snodgrass SR/WA, R/W‐NAC, R/W‐AMC 603 ‐ Understanding Environmental Contamina on in Real Estate – Oct. 8, 2015 (1 day) This course is geared toward right of way professionals who may face the issue of contaminated proper es, focusing on causes, effects and remedies of environmental contamina on. This course emphasizes the importance of knowing the behavior of contaminants in the environment, environmental liabili es and audi ng processes, underground storage tank removal and contamina on assessment, cleanup and closures. Par cipants will learn how to evaluate poten al problems that occur as a result of acquiring contaminated proper es, and to evaluate, manage and minimize risks and liabili es. Instructor: Fred Walasavage 604 ‐ Environmental Due Diligence and Liability ‐ October 9, 2015 (1 day) This course provides the right of way professional with an understanding of the environmental due diligence components. Par cipants learn to recognize when a due diligence report should be ordered, as well as how reports should be analyzed. Instructor: Fred Walasavage 205 ‐ Bargaining Nego a ons ‐ November 2‐3, 2015 (2 days) This course provides an overview of the steps involved in bargaining nego a ons, how to determine whether nego a ons are progressing in a bargaining or problem‐solving mode and the specific skills and a tudes required of successful bargainers. CONFERENCE REPORT - NOTES FROM JOE & NICK
(Joe speaks first …) SD 2015 has come and gone. It feels like yesterday we were si ng at the u‐shaped table at the Water Authority talking about making a bid for conference for... 2015? But that was so far away from then. A li le under six years at the me. I remember beach balls and life guard shirts in Calgary, and this new friendship with some guy named Nick at the Water Authority. I remember ge ng my 2015 DMV registra on tags in the mail in January and sending Nick a picture asking if it was really 2015 already. Fast forward to June 2015. This could be a novel with all the sto‐ries of teamwork and the tes ng of rela onships. Same two guys, same vision. Is this really what we do for work? The conference was a huge success. A endance records were smashed at all func‐ons. 1380+/‐ in total a endance from 15 countries, 750 peo‐
ple at the Monday Night Event, 1082 at the Awards luncheon. Keynote celebrity speaker Roy Firestone knocked it out of the park with his entertaining and mo va onal stories from his sportscaster past. (Did Nick and I really ditch the li le white suits and come out as the Blues Brothers? I even thought we were really going to sing!) Just when we thought it couldn't get any be er someone called "Flygirl" made us dig deep and ENGAGE READY HOT during the SR/WA breakfast. We had our first SR/WA's from Australia cross stage that morning…… (Nick answers some “tough” ques ons…) 1. What did you like best? ‐ I loved the planning and idea process that we had to go through. From the bid planning and booth in Calgary (2010) to the videos that were created for Har ord and San Diego. However most of all, the thing I liked best about being a part of the conference was all of the friendships and connec ons I made over the 5.5 years. 2. What surprised you the most, whether good or bad? ‐ How quickly 5.5 years would go. Also, what a great job our chapter and volunteers did.
3. One or two unforge able moments? – Every me Joe and I went up on the stage or just having people come up to us saying what a great job we were doing. (con nued on Page 5).

4. How many hours/days total did you each work on the event, start to finish? ‐ Too many hours, days to calculate . Joe and I spent more me together than with our families.
5. What you want to pass on to the Nashville chapter coordinators? ‐ Don’t blink, you will miss it. Also, task someone like Mike Flanagan and Carolyn Lee to do the organizing of volun‐teers. Joe and I can’t thank them enough.
6. How your employers supported your effort? ‐ My employer gave me the me to a end chapter mee ngs, a end conferences and conference planning mee ngs.
7. Par ng words? ‐ We pulled off the most suc‐cessful conference to date. Joe and I would vol‐unteer in a heartbeat to do this all over again.

Meet Your Colleague
This month we hear from member Eric Schneider, Senior Analyst with Integra Realty Resources. A relatively new member of Chapter 11, he has already added “chapter volunteer” to his resume covering the last four years with Integra and his overall six years in ROW in the appraisal field … for the next few months, you’ll find him filling in for our Membership Chair, Lisa Murphy, SR/WA.
1. What are your current job responsibilities? My job involves the appraisal of commercial and residential properties for a variety of purposes and projects. 2. What has been your favorite project you have been involved with? My favorite appraisal is one I did recently involving several properties subject to a ground lease with restricted rents (among other things). I enjoyed it because it was the most challenging appraisal I’ve done to date and forced me to think. I now point out the project to my friends and family whenwe drive by it. 3. What path did you take to arrive in the ROW industry? I started in ROW appraisal by working with a great mentor, Bob Perdue, who helped me learn the ropes and get into the appraisal field. 4. What hobbies or activities outside of work do you most en-joy? I enjoy working out (CrossFit), drinking craft beer (white ales and pale ales), and spending time with my two bosses (my wife of five years and my baby girl of 10 months). 5. What is your ideal vacation destination? I’ve never been on a cruise and I’ve never been to Alaska, so I’m thinking an Alaskan cruise would be ideal! 6. If you could try another job for a day what would it be? A fighter pilot, because I think I would only last a day. It doesn’t help that I’m not a fan of heights. 7. Whom do you admire and why? Probably not the most original, but I admire my mom, who is still one of my biggest supporters. 8. Tell us about an experience you consider part of your 15 minutes of fame. Growing up in Orange County, I once had some friends that were on the Real Housewives show. That’s as close to fame I think I’m going to get. 9. Is there a ROW/public improvement project you would like to see developed in the region? I am really looking forward to the Mid-Coast Trolley expansion. Living in Clairemont, it will be really nice to travel on alternate modes of transportation in that area. I would like to see an extension that stops at my door-step, but it’s okay if it doesn’t. 10. Is there any one question in particular that you would like to ask your ROW colleagues? “What’s your name?” I’m relatively new to the group, so I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone. 11. Do you have any advice to newly hired ROW professionals? I think that it is important to get involved. I wouldn’t be where I am without being a part of the community.

Recently we learned with regret that Long-time member Joel Newsom has passed away. A member of IRWA since 1950, Joel worked for Caltrans and for County of
San Diego Public Works. He served Chapter 11 on both the Publicity Committee and the Ethics & Employment Committee. In recent years, he would join us for one or

San Diego Coastal Bike Traverse — Supervisors Authorize SANDAG Grant Applications Totaling $850,000 for Camp Pendleton Trail
The County of San Diego approved the application, along with acceptance if awarded, for a pair of active transportation grants which would improve a bicycle trail through Camp Pendleton. A 5-0 San Diego County Board of Supervisors vote March 18 authorized a resolution to the San Diego Association of Gov-ernments (SANDAG) for two Active Transportation Grant Pro-gram applications totaling $850,000. The funding would ad-dress current safety deficiencies along the public San Diego Coastal Bike Path.
“The biggest gap we have in San Diego County is through Camp Pendleton,” said Supervi-sor Greg Cox. “That’s also part of the California Coastal Trail.” SANDAG’s Active Transportation Grant Program funds planning efforts for bicycle-oriented and pedestrian-oriented transportation. The grant program has $2.25 million availa-ble for capital projects and $750,000 for non-capital projects. Only SANDAG member agen-cies are eligible to receive the grant funds; although the Department of Defense is a non-voting advisory member of the SANDAG board and has input during board meetings, the Marine Corps can collaborate with member agencies but cannot apply directly for funds. The Marine Corps requested the assistance of the County of San Diego, which is a SAND-AG member agency, in the grant application process. An application for $440,000 would construct a dedicated bike lane on each side of an exist-ing 100-foot bridge which crosses Las Flores Creek on Stuart Mesa Road. The existing 24-foot pavement area with guardrails on both sides creates a potential conflict between bicy-clists and motor vehicles on the roadway which is used by large military vehicles and a North County Transit District bus line as well as by private vehicles. The application for $410,000 would provide funding to construct dedicated bike lanes on each side of a 250-foot earthen bridge on Stuart Mesa Road. The earthen bridge would be widened by using crib wall construction to avoid sensitive habitat. That part of Stuart Mesa Road also has large military vehicles and NCTD buses which can create safety issues for bicyclists. “It’s not for the Marine Corps. It’s for the civilian population,” said Supervisor Bill Horn. “I think it’s a really good addition.” The County of San Diego would be the official grant recipient with the Marine Corps con-sidered a sub-grantee. The county would be able to delegate project responsibilities to the Marine Corps including funding management, project reporting, and submitting invoices directly to SANDAG, although the county would be responsible for compliance with the grant agreement requirements. SANDAG expects the grants to be announced sometime this month (August 2015).
