The Challenge
The Customer
Customers typically
achieve ROI within 6 to 12
months while increasing
cybersecurity... That’s why
they call versiondog the
watchdog of automation.
The Solution
Auvesy's process control system support with Versiondog has been used by many pharmaceutical companies, including: Amgen,
Boehringer, Saxonia Medical, Fresenius, GlaxoSmithKline, KVP (Bayer Health Care), Lohmann & Rauscher, Lundbeck Pharma
A/S, Rentschler, Roche Diagnostics, Sun Chemical, Vetter Pharma, and Xellia Pharmaceuticals.
In many automated production facilities, changes are made to SIMATIC PCS 7 projects on a daily basis, with individual processes
often optimized by multiple workers due to shift changes. Documentation is key here, as this keeps workers informed about why a
change was made. Furthermore, SIMATIC PCS 7 installations are generally used in locations where documentation is required
for audits and certification.
The ability to track changes between two software projects is not only an invaluable aid during shift changes, but also when
searching for errors or optimizing a PCS 7 installation. Every change made to the system is labor-intensive and time-consuming.
Moreover, there is also the risk that errors may occur.
The fact that SIMATIC PCS 7 projects use extremely large quantities of data complicates the situation even further, and it can
take a long time to load and save information as a result. Without a sustainable strategy for operating a SIMATIC PCS 7
installation, searching for the right software version can become extremely time-consuming.
The Siemens Solutions Partner AUVESY (Automated Versioning Systems) has developed a major PCS 7 add-on for its
versiondog software that can be integrated seamlessly into any SIMATIC PCS 7 setup while meeting all data management
requirements.
The versiondog software allows users to back up, version and document not only SIMATIC PCS 7 projects, but also software
versions of all other automation devices involved in production. The data management system is usually installed on a virtual
machine in the local network and is available to all users who have been granted the necessary authorization.
Other aspects of the solution includes:
1. Carry out data backups throughout entire lifecycle of SIMATIC PCS 7 installation
2. Help detect cyber-attacks due to automated backups of systems and cyclical comparisons
3. Plan and map out entire lifecycle of system
4. Compare SFC and CFC blocks of project without need for any additional drivers. All differences can be highlighted and
individually selected (no need for manual searches)
5. Fully document changes for audits, validation and/or certification
6. Version control – immediate device restoration

The Challenge
The Customer
Using NI Single-Board RIO,
LabVIEW, and other
innovative technologies in
the Naftamatika WellSim
controller, we have
significantly increased well
production efficiency and
reduced maintenance costs.
The Solution
Naftamatika offers modern, efficient, proven solutions for producing oil wells. Their customers get technologies and equipment,
that have no analogs in the world. Naftamatika have developed and are producing the unique automation equipment for oil
production and are supplying partner’s products. The company is focusing on innovations, is permanently carrying out R&D,
upgrading the produced equipment and improving quality of services.
Naftamatika was looking to develop an oil well pump control system which could optimize oil well operation using only sensors
installed on surface equipment.
There were several desired features in the project. Firstly, long-term monitoring of wells and working on logging cables during the
descent/ascent and while appliance in a well is required. The project also looks at the ability to control the motor’s speed with
Variable Frequency Drive (“VFD), as well as the possibility to connect additional sensors of Hall, load, tubing head pressure and
construction of surface card.
Furthermore, this project also looks at simultaneous measurement and storage of non-volatile memory of all measurements,
together with the transmission of data to a computer for analysis and display through FTP, and integrating into the SCADA
system.
Ovak Technologies developed the software upon technical specification of Naftamatika company. The Naftamatika WellSim
company, based on the NI SingleBoard RIO platform, was programmed using the LabVIEW Real-Time Module and LabVIEW
FPGA Module. LabVIEW was chosen because it is easy to use and significantly faster to develop a complicated application with a
user-friendly GUI. LabVIEW provides a platform to easily develop and change algorithms.
In addition to rod pump control functions, the Naftamatika WellSim controls and monitors the whole system. It provides a
complete well simulation based on data obtained from the single universal integrated load and position sensors. This approach is
very useful in monitoring well parameters and provides ample opportunities for real-time downhole equipment diagnostics. Such a
system is necessary due to oil reserve exhaustion, high cost electric power, and the desire for oil companies to lower the cost of
well maintenance and increase labor efficiency.
Using the controller, the user can manage the well in manual or automatic mode. Automatic control uses an improved algorithm
based on this well model, which is how we achieve the highest accuracy, parameter calculation stability, and maximum pumping
unit operating reliability. The controller supports the Modbus Remote Terminal Unit protocol and interacts with XSPOC and other
supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
An accelerometer in a weatherproof enclosure takes accurate position measurements on the polished rod (not the modeled
position). Internal electronics provide signal conditioning necessary for accurate data acquisition. The load cell sensor is mounted
on polished rod. The sensor works on Wheatstone bridge principle with a temperature compensation. Load measurement
accuracy is 0.25 percent, and load measurements range from 0 to 22,500 kg/50,000 lb.

The Challenge
The Customer
Emerson wanted to provide
a connected environmental
analyzer… Compliance with
pollution control board
guidelines and the ability to
remotely calibrate and
troubleshoot these devices
was the primary objective.
The Solution
Emerson Process Management is a Fortune 500 corporation headquartered in Missouri, United States. Emerson manufactures
products and provides engineering services for a wide range of industrial and consumer markets. Emerson’s goal with this project
was to make their environmental analyzers smart and connected. These analyzers are then deployed for monitoring industrial
stack emissions and wastewater at Emerson’s customer sites.
Emerson Process Management is looking to support legacy analyzers: desired solution was required to work with all existing
models of analyzers, both digital and analog. Furthermore, multiple regulations must be complied, i.e. compliance reporting as per
Federal and State directives is complex and varies from state to state.
Communications must be highly secured since missing or tampered compliance data could potentially lead to penalties incurred
for the customer.
A lack of diagnostic data and no remote access being available led to frequent and extremely costly field visits.
Lastly, existing SCADA systems could not be used enterprise-wide to serve needs of different uses, therefore multi-tenancy must
be supported.
SenseGrow team worked with their Application Partner, LogicLadder™, to understand the requirements related to all the legacy
hardware. Leveraging the unique architecture of ioEYE™, SenseGrow supported these legacy devices on their Cloud Platform,
thereby making them plug-n-play. This enabled LogicLadder to focus on Emerson’s business requirements, without spending time
or energy on the underlying core IoT infrastructure.
LogicLadder used ioEYE to build a custom white-labeled solution for Emerson. Using ioEYE’s drivers-on-the-cloud technology,
SenseGrow provided support for all the devices that needed to be in the solution. By building their application on top of ioEYE
platform, LogicLadder is able to provide intelligent insights about stack emissions and wastewater. This helps Emerson’s
customers to take corrective actions remotely and in real-time.
Emerson Process Management today has a major footprint in India, offering Smart IoT Analyzers for monitoring industrial stack
emissions and wastewater. All stakeholders are aware of what is happening in real-time, and have insights for better collaboration
between teams and pollution control boards. Advanced analytics and machine learning provide information that lets them identify
anomalies, act in time and take corrective actions remotely. This helps them lower their operational, support and maintenance
costs.

The Challenge
The Customer
The system automatically
detects the sunshine,
temperature, humidity, air
circulation and other
conditions, activating control
components to adjust the
environmental condition.
The Solution
Orchid farming is the most successful form of precision farming in Taiwan, and also the most exported flower. Some farmers
began to import automated greenhouse control systems for breeding and forcing. In 2012, an orchid farmer built a Forcing
greenhouse of about 660m2 in Tainan, Taiwan.
Orchids need a specific temperature and humidity condition to grow and bloom, and its flowering time may not be in line with
market demands, so the price collapses when there is overproduction.
In the past, most environmental control systems of orchid greenhouses in Taiwan used PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller)
with poor scalability and control, and could not be connected to the Internet from the Cloud. For advanced database analysis and
networking capability, the PC platform must be adopted.
The system integrator adopted Advantech’s APAX-5000 series programmable automation controllers to build the control platform,
couple with Advantech WebAccess HMI/SCADA software, to achieve cloud monitoring. The staff of the orchid field can monitor
important data anytime via smart phone, iPad, and other handheld devices, and control the growth and flowering conditions.
The environmental control of the Orchid greenhouse switches on and off devices like fan, shade net, cooling/heat pump, liquid
flow control, water-cooling wall, etc. It is controlled by a control panel of electric controllers, and is driven by a motor, to adjust the
greenhouse temperature, humidity and other environmental conditions to the set parameters.
The Forcing Greenhouse uses an Advantech APAX-5520 programmable controller as a control host to connect the APAX-5520,
APAX-5017, APAX-5028, APAX-5045, and other I/O modules, to attach to the remote sensors and control components via cables,
and to connect to expansion modules and electric controllers via a network cable.
With Advantech APAX controllers and WebAccess software, the staff of orchid farm can set the greenhouse’s environmental
control parameters with an easy-to-use graphical interface in the computer and network environment. The system automatically
detects the sunshine, temperature, humidity, air circulation and other conditions, activating control components to adjust the
environmental condition inside the greenhouse to the set parameters.
For clients, the APAX-5000 control host connects to the office PC via a network cable, and connects to the cloud via wireless
transmission. For monitoring orchid greenhouse conditions and data, the staff only needs to download and install Advantech app
on a smartphone or iPad.
Advantech’s APAX-5000 series have the advantage of saving wiring costs and being of a low cost. In the old PLC system, the
control host needed several cables to connect to electric equipment in greenhouse. The wiring is quite complex and difficult to
maintain but the APAX-5020 only needs one network cable to connect to the APAX expansion module and the environmental
control room.

The Challenge
The Customer
The fact that NGRAIN is the
only supplier outside of the
US that has ever worked on
the F-22 is a testament to
the F-35 tracking and repair
solution’s effectiveness.
The Solution
As a global security, innovation, and aerospace company, the majority of Lockheed Martin’s business is with the U.S. Department
of Defense and U.S. federal government agencies. In addition, Sikorsky (a Lockheed Martin Company) provides military and
rotary-wing aircraft to all five branches of the U.S. armed forces along with military services and commercial operators in 40
nations.
Accurate assessment of airframe damage resulting from combat or environmental hazards is crucial. Seemingly small factors –
such as the depth of a scratch or the distance of a hole from supporting structures – can impact flight-worthiness, aircraft stealth
capability and pilot safety.
Traditional methods – placing a transparent film over damaged areas, tracing reference points, and then cross-referencing with
data history – was cumbersome and time consuming, leaving more room for maintenance errors.
Working closely with Lockheed engineers, NGRAIN developed the industry’s first interactive 3D Virtual Damage Repair and
Tracking solution. Lockheed Martin engineers adopted interactive 3D technology to integrate into their existing information
infrastructure for the F-35, also known as the Autonomic Logistics Information Systems (ALIS) software suite. Based on
NGRAIN’s volume graphics technology (which provides optimal rendering performance on laptops and supports the high degree
of accuracy required), and developed using NGRAIN’s Software Development KIT (SDK), the solution allows aircraft maintainers
to capture damage information within a detailed 3D virtual model of the aircraft.
When working with the damage assessment solution, the technician specifies the aircraft tail number – the aircraft’s unique
identifier. The solution recognizes this number and immediately displays historical damage and repair data for that particular
aircraft. The technician then enters metadata – such as damage type and dimensions – which is stored in the ALIS backend for
future retrieval. Technicians can then use the solution to identify location of damage, insert photos and notes, as well as visually
locate parts for ordering. The software works with other software applications within ALIS to help with quick assessment of
damages. It also helps maintainers determine which damages need to be repaired to restore the aircraft to mission capability.
USAF technicians reported easier visualization of damage repair data thanks to integrated technology and immediate access to
historical aircraft information post-operations. This has helped technicians save time and reduce the maintenance time-to-flight
ratio.
Results include:
• Increased operational availability of equipment
• Work more efficiently with fewer personnel
• Capture data more accurately
• Ensure mission-readiness of equipment via efficient and accurate maintenance

The Challenge
The Customer
Accelerating time to value,
minimizing cost and risk,
and transforming how their
products, people and
systems connect gives Joy
Global the competitive edge
they need to stay ahead.
The Solution
Joy Global focuses exclusively on the mining industry, with an expanding product line in underground hard rock mining machinery representing the next step in our expansion into nickel, palladium, platinum, gold and copper markets.
The continued expansion of emerging market economies implies Joy Global’s continued optimization of global manufacturing and distribution footprint.
Joy Global's existing business processes required customers to work through an unstable legacy system to collect mass volumesof data. With inadequate processes and tools, field level analytics were not sufficient to properly inform business decisions.
The mining industry is also facing challenges of its own. Mines will get deeper and less accessible. The ores excavated will be lower grade. The volume moved will be greater. And the environmental regulations will be stricter. High commodity prices a few years ago meant that industry revenues stayed high using traditional methods, so there was little push for innovation. Yet, now with falling prices and increased competition, the industry has begun a process of transformation.
Deploying a ThingWorx platform means that the data collection process is now stabilized, and at the same time innovations on
new applications for customers have increased.
Further benefits of the platform include:

The Challenge
The Customer
Adroit SCADA is being
used to ensure tanker
safety and engine emission
compliance for some of the
worlds’ largest shipping
companies.
The Solution
Major shipping companies have tankers to transport liquids or gases in bulks. When a tanker is being loaded, it is critical that the various storage tanks on board are balanced to avoid the tanker listing to one side or in the worst-case scenario even capsizing.
Major shipping companies are also engaged in numerous efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and further improve efficiency across the fleet. Efforts focus on significant improvements to fuel economy with a subsequent reduction in emissions.
Storage tanks are irregular in shape and a certain amount of mathematical modeling is required to get an accurate representationof volume and, more importantly the weight of material in each tank.
Different countries have different emission regulations so the ships’ position needed to be accurately known to geotag emission data.
Adroit SCADA enables engineers to model irregular tank shapes easily, enabling real-time display of the amount of material in
each tank during the loading stage of the vessel. Adroit SCADA can interface to a gas analyzer, enabling the system to read
emission data from the ships’ engine and display it in real time. Within Adroit SCADA, there is an interface to a global GPS to read
the ship’s location in real time. Positional data along with emission readings is then logged for later analysis and reporting. When
the ship returns to port, various reports can be generated to satisfy Regulatory Authorities as to the tankers’ course and emission
levels in different regions.
Hardware components:
• Gas analyzer
• Global GPS
Software components
• Adroit SCADA
There are several operational impacts. Real-time tracking enables identification of location and assets in near real-time. Asset
utilization maximizes the level of asset utilization within safety constraints,. Cloud solutions enable aggregation of ‘big data’ to
enable more robust analysis.

Accelerating Adoption of the
Industrial Internet of Things
Our mission is to accelerate adoption of Industrial IoT technologies. We aspire to drive adoption by providing the
granular information that decision makers need to make investments in new technologies and projects.
It is widely believed that adoption of Industrial IoT technologies will reshape the global economy. However, the
understanding gap between technology vendors, systems integrators and end users continues to prevent
adoption. Companies use our databases to identify, assess, and prioritize the solutions and partners they need to
achieve transformative business results. We focus on addressing three challenges that slow adoption:
• Executive leadership lacks sufficient understanding of the IIoT landscape to make confident strategic decisions
regarding product and project planning.
• Procurement managers have limited experience assessing IIoT vendors and technologies, which slows the
process of identifying the solutions that best meet their requirements.
• Operations teams lack experience implementing IIoT solutions, increasing implementation costs and risk.
We are always looking for opportunities to better serve our customers and users. To submit your case studies to
feature in future editions of the Case Study Spotlight or to learn more about featured solutions, email
