Evolution to IoT
• steam power and industrialization ~1700 Watt • Electrification ~1880 Tesla • internet and age of information ~1948 Shannon • IoT and Industrial Internet 2011- Zhou
What is IoT?
Research challenges
• Integration of heterogeneous IoT-based networks (M2M, SCADA, RFID, WSN)
• Adaptive scalability (Cloud) • Data filtering and alert notification • Development and deployment of services
(Fog, APIs)
Dev. and Imp. challenges
• Internet connection availability • Security and Privacy • Power consumption (by sensor/smart device) • Fault Tolerance • Standardization • Acceptability among the society
Standards
• RFID (NFC, EPCglobal, DASH7, … ) • WSN (6LoWPAN, RPL, UWB, … ) • SCADA (BACnet, OPC UA, Profinet, KNX , …) • M2M (ZigBee, Wireless USB, …) RFID + WSN + SCADA + M2M = IoT
SOA/EAI with SODA/MAI
Reference Architecture (IoT-a)
Reference Architecture detailed
Are we inventing wheel again?
Area of application: Industrial Automation (ISA 88 and ISA 95), Building Automation (BACnet), MES, RFID / Auto-ID, Oil&Gas, MTConnect.
Recent activities
• IIC (http://www.industrialinternetconsortium.org/) • OIC (http://openinterconnect.org/) • IoT-a (http://www.iot-a.eu/public) • IERC (SRIA) (http://www.internet-of-things-research.eu/) • OPC (https://opcfoundation.org/)
Summary
• High level architecture is clear • Transport infrastructure is under development • Protocols are under discussion and development In SUM we know what we are going to do but we do not know how exactly
