“It made sense for us to choose
Concarneau, Cornouaille, as a
base for Kaïros. Here there is a
thriving port activity, curbing
the risk of isolation. It's also very
pretty, we're lucky in Brittany,
there's something magical
about it! We have strong ties
with the sea but also with the
land. Concarneau covers a vast
territory, where the land and sea
live in symbiosis. We have created
an enriching ecosystem. Many
young people, often engineers,
come to spend time with us. They
discover Concarneau and Brittany,
and most of them settle here! So
there really must be something
special about this place...”
Sophie Vercelletto is one of Quimper Cornouaille’s Top Talents. Her motto: “The pleasure of giving and receiving”. She is inspired by her partner Roland. Sophie is brimming with talent. After studying law, Sophie went on to become CEO of the Vendée Globe, then Co-Director of Kaïros, a company in the field of offshore sailing races, and co-founder together with skipper Roland Jourdain of the Fonds Explore, an incubator for innovative exploration projects with a positive impact for the planet.

“Our parents decided to set up La Compagnie Bretonne at the epicentre of Cornouaille’s fishing harbours. Today, we are carrying on this tradition, proud of this heritage and this very dynamic area. Here we are close to our fishery partners. We aim to be forward-looking to ensure the canning trade thrives and evolves. In early 2020, we moved to a new production site that we chose to open up to the public and to tourism. As a living heritage enterprise, we are keen to explain what we do and show how our teams work.”

I was working in Toulouse as a spatial engineer at the time and decided to start all over because my job had begun to feel meaningless. Here there is authenticity, that rather harsh dimension, the sea, the winter climate...”

TRAILBLAZING“We decided to base our business in Cornouaille primarily for maritime and geographical reasons. This area harbours a dynamic approach and a thriving port network. It sparks development opportunities. Thanks to our location, we are immersed in a lively ecosystem of SMEs across South Finistère, with a strong interest in reviving maritime transport flows. We easily became integrated in the economic fabric which is made up of ambitious, committed, socially responsible, approachable entrepreneurs.”

“Brittany is a very dynamic region and. Cornouaille, a real energy peninsula, is even more so when it comes to renewable energies and energy transition with a network of innovative players. We also chose Cornouaille for the palette of talents and skills available. Here we were supported by a strong network to help us get our company off the ground... Thanks to this jump-start, today we are in turn able to support new start-ups and to develop synergies with other Cornouaille-based businesses.”

“I’m from Cornouaille so it was natural for me to base my company here, offering crêpe-making workshops built on the know-how handed down from my grandmothers and showcasing our local culinary heritage. Cornouaille is also an attractive area for French and foreign visitors in search of a Breton experience. My workshops are designed for them, as well as for local companies, for example for business incentives. Here, entrepreneurs enjoy many advantages: competent economic advisers, high-quality practical guidance sessions by the municipality, consular chambers and Quimper Cornouaille Développement. The proactive role of tourist offices is also a major asset.”

PASSION“I started up my company Flex & Relax (Bean You), in Douarnenez in April 2016. From the outset, I decided to outsource the manufacture of my products to industrial partners. Cornouaille's network of agri-food businesses is able to meet this challenge, especially as partnership is a word with true meaning here. Cornouaille-based entrepreneurs have a strong “collective” mindset. Brought together through many professional networks across the territory, they share a common value: goodwill.”

“Cornouaille was the natural choice of location for us as it is where we live. Today, geographical distance is no longer a handicap for digital and Internet of Things businesses. The roll-out of very high-speed internet is an asset that attracts businesses to the area. Additionally, with prestigious engineering schools and cutting-edge university laboratories close at hand, we are able to build research partnerships to develop innovative solutions.”

Innovation in our genesCornouaille’s industry developed through innovation. Back in the 19th century, canneries cashed in on the novel concept of airtight food preservation invented by Nicolas Appert. Today, with over 3,000 product innovations each year, the agri-food industry, especially in Brittany, sets itself apart thanks to its strong propensity to innovate.
This innovation reflex and pioneering mindset can be seen across all sectors, from century-old businesses to fledgling start-ups, not forgetting freelancers.
