Session Goals - Chris
• Develop a common language around literacy demands of science.
• Build capacity in content literacy strategies specifically suited for science.
• Introduce analytic graphic organizers as a strategy for organizing thoughts in science.
• Introduce the uses of graphic organizers in science.
Analytic Graphic Organizer - PaulaWhat is it? This strategy uses a visual format like charts, diagrams, and graphs to help students explore the characteristics, relationships, or effects of a complex topic. How does it work? Makes visible the mental process you want your students to accomplish. How can it be used?– Visually organize information– Show relationships– Synthesize information from multiple sources– Convey understanding.
Directions - Chris
1. Explain the purpose of a graphic organizer and how ideas are linked.
2. Model how to complete the organizer depending on the type.
3. You may want to teach students how to select their own graphic organizer to fit the type of reading and/or information.
4. Help students through the process of completing the organizer.
5. Ask students to discuss the benefits of using a graphic organizer.
Student Work Sample
Foldables
Extensions - Chris
1. Students share the organizers with one another and compare responses.
2. Students modify graphic organizers or design new formats to fit content.
3. Students can use the organizer for a certain purpose. (i.e. starting the writing process, study guide, etc.)
