Cell-cultivated vaccines have been developed using new technologies that produce vaccines after cultivating viruses using animal cells. It takes more than six months to produce conventional vaccines using fertile eggs. Therefore, we could not flexibly address shortages of vaccines caused by a sudden outbreak of epidemic diseases or shortage of fertile eggs because of avian influenza. As cell-cultivated vaccines are produced using animal cells, the production takes only two to three months, enabling a stable supply irrespective of sudden crises like those caused by avian influenza.SK Chemicals has started a full-scale clinical trial of 4-strain influenza vaccines that can immunize four different types of influenza, after starting clinical trials of its cell-cultivated influenza vaccine for the first time in Korea. In addition, the company actively pursues overseas sales of premium vaccines under partnerships with global pharmaceutical companies.

Eco Lab, which houses SK Chemicals offices and labs, is said to be the most environmentally friendly building in Korea. The building helps to prevent global warming as 101 different types of advanced technologies that were applied to the building reduce its annual energy bills and consumption by 40% and 44%, respectively. The building releases 33% less CO2 gas than other buildings and facilities in the nation. This effect can be compared to planting 94,000 pine trees. It also uses 63% less water resources than other buildings. Eco Lab was awarded Platinum or the highest grade certificate by the U.S. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), for the first time among all currently occupied buildings in Korea. It earned Korea’s highest score of 110 points (out of total 136 points) in Green Building Certification Criteria (GBCC) certified by the Korean government. It was given the Korea Architectural Culture Award in the Private Sector Grand Prize in 2011. ‘L HOUSE,’ a vaccine production facility in Andong, Korea has won LEED Gold grade for the first time among all pharmaceutical facilities in the world. Sixteen new technologies have been applied to the construction of the L House while adhering to GMP regulations, including those for saving energy and water resources, environment, and well-being. It is designed to save 30% more energy than the existing factories by introducing various environmentally-friendly living facilities, including LED illumination, recycled toilet water, and water-saving commodes.

SK Chemicals management and employees have participated in diverse activities that contribute environmental protection, including “A.cure” where they clean local streams and rivers, and Happy Green Class where volunteers explain the importance of the environment to elementary school students.
