BIOGRAPHIES
Audrey Chen, a senior at Interlake High School, began studies with Kai Chen at age 9. Throughout high school, she has distinguished herself in multiple fes-tivals and programs, including recently winning first place at the Washington State Music Teacher’s National Association Solo Competition, being chosen as a winner in the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival, and being recognized as principal cellist of the USA’s very first National Youth Orchestra. In addition, Audrey has soloed with over seven different orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Audrey is currently principal cellist of the Interlake Chamber Orchestra and the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra, and she is also an active member in her community, performing for retirement centers, benefit concerts, and non-profit organizations. She plays on a French Buthod cello on
generous loan from the Carlsen Cello Foundation.
Irene Chen is a senior at the University of Washington, double majoring in pi-ano and biochemistry. Besides accompanying for her sister, Audrey, she also accompanies local students on the eastside for solo and ensemble festivals and recitals. In the summer of her junior year in high school Irene began her teaching career of beginner piano students on the weekends, and she has con-
tinued teaching since.
A senior at Interlake High School, Stanley Chu started playing piano when he was four years old. He currently studies with Joyce Tang. Last year Stanley achieved the highest score in Washington state on the final level (Grade 10) of the ABRSM piano exam. Stanley also plays the violin, and he is a member of the Interlake Chamber Orchestra. In his free time Stanley enjoys drawing and skateboarding. Upon graduation, Stanley plans to pursue a career in medicine
while continuing his musical studies.
Dr. Shira Katsman has been teaching professionally for 19 years, both private-ly and in the public school system. Currently the Orchestra Director at Interlake High School and Ardmore Elementary School, Dr. Katsman has been teaching in the Bellevue School District since 2001. Prior to moving to Seattle, she was the Music Director at The Beekman Hill International School in New York City and taught violin and viola to graduate students at Teachers College, Columbia

University. Dr. Katsman began her musical studies on the piano and violin at the ages of 5 and 7, respectively, and while in college she also began studies on the viola. Dr. Katsman received her Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, The University of the Arts and her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her teachers have included Dr. Chin Kim, William dePas-quale, Jascha Brodsky, Arkady Fomin, Delmar Pettys, and her very first violin
teacher, Carolyn Hammett.
Cayla Lee, a freshman at Interlake High School, started playing the violin at age 7. She is currently studying with Stephen Daniels. Cayla has been concert-master for all her middle school orchestras and is now the concertmaster of the Interlake High School Concert Orchestra. She has received top marks from several music festivals, is an active member of the SYSO Junior Orchestra, and
she has participated in the Junior All-State Orchestra.
Dr. Shiang-Yin Lee received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello perfor-mance from the University of Washington. She studied with Raymond Davis, Cordelia Miedel, Toby Saks, Yehuda Hanani, and Marion Feldman, and cello pedagogy with internationally renowned pedagogues Phyllis Young and Irene Sharp. She is currently principal cellist of the Sammamish Symphony Orches-tra. She has participated in the Aspen Music Festival and has studied Baroque cello and Early Music at Amsterdam Conservatory of Music in the Netherlands. Dr. Lee is currently Adjunct Faculty at the University of Puget Sound/Community Music Department. She is also a cello coach for the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra, cello faculty at Music Works Northwest since 2001, and directs the Music Works Cello Choir since 2005. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Lee is an active freelance performer in the Seattle area, performing with groups such as the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, the MWNW First Friday Concert
Series, and Seattle Downtown Association “Out to Lunch” concert series.
Darren Leung started his violin studies at age five, and has pursued his musi-cal passion ever since, studying with John Kim. He has appeared as a soloist with the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra performing the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1, and he has performed in Benaroya Hall as the lead violinist of his Interlake Piano Quintet in the 2011 Ten Grands concert. His ensemble also won first place in the WMEA State Solo and Ensemble contest for small ensem-bles. In addition, Darren was a finalist in the Performing Arts Festival of the
East Side Concerto Competition in 2011 and won his class for the SYAMF Solo competition. Along with his soloist endeavors, Darren has participated in the Washington All-State Orchestra, the All-Northwest Orchestra, and most recent-ly the All-National Honors Ensemble. He has been a member of the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra for the past eight years, last year serving as con-certmaster. Currently, Darren is a member of the first violin section of the Seat-tle Youth Symphony Orchestra and an IB Diploma recipient at Interlake High
School.
Pamela Liu began violin at age 5 in the Suzuki Method. Her love of music brought her on three European tours, performing in the orchestra with the North Carolina School of the Arts, San Francisco Youth Symphony and Evergreen Symphony. She was concertmaster of the Seattle Youth Symphony and has now come full circle to coach the Junior and Debut Symphony violin 1 levels. Ms. Liu also teaches private and chamber group lessons at Music Works North-west. She is a former Lake Washington Music Teachers Association member and board member for Seattle Young Artist Music Festival from 2009-2011. She also performs as concertmaster of the Cascade Symphony, as section
violin 1 for the Yakima Symphony, and with the chamber group Bella Sala.
As a child Bryan Lowe had a toy radio broadcast kit where he spent hours and hours imitating the announcers at his favorite station, KING FM. After graduat-ing from WSU in 1979 his first job application was for an announcer position at KING FM, and he has been there ever since. His interest in technology lead to early involvement in the Internet at KING FM as Director of Internet Operations where he helped create four online channels of classical music, more than any other classical station in the world. In 2006 Bryan became Program Director of KING FM. In his free time Bryan enjoys boat building. He has an extensive instrument collection that includes a rare Cristal Baschet, a glass and metallic
instrument/sculpture.
A senior at Interlake High School, Christopher Lu, 17, was the National Win-ner of the 2011 MTNA Junior Piano Competition held in Milwaukee and a 2010 National Finalist. Most recently in November, Chris was named a 2014 Nation-al YoungArts Winner in Classical piano, and won the 2013 Washington State Senior MTNA Competition and advanced to Regional Finals in January. Chris placed first in WA and Northwest Regional MTNA Junior Piano Competition two years in a row. He was the gold medalist of the 2008 Seattle International Pi-

ano Competition (SIPF) Junior Youth category and silver Medalist in the 2010 SIPF Senior Youth category. Other notable past honors and awards include 1st place in the Small String Ensemble and 2nd place in the Piano Solo divisions at the 2011 State Solo & Ensemble competition; and performance as a soloist with the Ashdod Symphony Orchestra in Perugia, Italy this past summer. Chris started piano lessons at age five and has been a student of Dr. Peter Mack. Besides Piano, Chris also plays the Cello and is an avid chamber musi-cian. He is the chief advisor to the board of directors of the student-found “Instruments for Change” non-profit organization. Most recently Chris achieved the distinction of “National AP Scholar” and is also a National Merit Scholarship
Semi-finalist.
Greg Savage received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in viola perfor-mance from the University of Missouri where he was a recipient of the Danforth Fellowship and Curator Scholarship. He studied under William Primrose, Don-ald McInnes, and Yitzak Schotten and also attended the Banff School of Music in Alberta, Canada where he worked with Gerald Stanick, Donald McInnis, and Janos Starker. He was the principal violist of the Bellevue Philharmonic and the University of Missouri Symphony Orchestra, and a soloist with the North-west Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his performance career, Mr. Savage has conducted the Southeast Alaska Symphony and has pursued doctoral studies at the University of Washington with Eric Shumsky. Currently, Mr. Sav-age maintains a viola studio at Music Works Northwest, and he is in high de-
mand as a teacher and clinician.
