IntroductionBCF Technology Ltd is the market leader in the development and production of ultrasonic ‘real time’ pregnancy scanners for most animal species. The company has been developing and manufacturing these systems for the last 28 years.

Operator safetyEasi-Scan is designed to run from its external battery latched to the scanner.

ThebatteriesmustbechargedusingonlytheBCFStandalonecharger,batterychargerorintegratedcarrycasepoweredfromthecarpoweroutlet(12VDC)ortheBCFmainspowersupply.Thecarrycasemustnotbeclosedduringcharging.Iftheunitmustbechargedusingthemainsadapter,useonlyindryconditions.

AlthoughtheEasi-Scanrunsfromalowvoltagesource,highvoltagesaregeneratedinsidetheunit.Forthisreasonnoattemptshouldbemadetodisassemblethescanner.

1 Operating instructions1.1 PRELIMINARY SWITCH ON

Ensurethattheexternalbatteryissecurelylatchedtothetopofthescanner.

Switchontheremotevideomonitor(ifused),ensuringcorrectreceivechannelselected.Attachthewristdisplayorgogglestotheuserconnectorportontopofthescanner(fig2).Checktheplugandsocketarefreefromdebris.Alignthedotsontheplugandsocketandpushtoclickinplace.

1.2 POWER

Topowerthescanneron,pressandholdthepowerbutton (fig3)untilthescannerbeeps.ThecontrolpanelLED(fig4)willilluminategreen.

TheexternalbatterychargelevelisindicatedontheBatteryLEDwhilethescannerisswitchedon.Onpower-up,thescannerwillperformasysteminitialisation,displayingtheMainMenu,currentoperatingmodeandbatterylevelindicator.Inaddition,agreybarwillbevisibledowntheleftsideofthedisplay(fig1).

Theonscreenbatteryindicatorgivesamoreaccurateindicationofthebatterychargeremainingintheexternalbattery.Ifviewingonadisplayheadset,theheadsetmayneedtobeswitchedonseparately.Thescannerwillbeepasecondtime,indicatingsysteminitialisationiscompleteandthesystemisreadytofunction.

Note: Thescannerwillpoweronwiththesamesettingsithadwhenlastswitchedoff.

Toswitchthescanneroff,pressandholdthepowerbuttonuntilthescannerbeepstwice.

1.3 SCANNING

Easi-Scanhasseveralselectablepresetscanningapplicationmodes.SystemGAINmaybevariedtosuitcurrentstudy.AshortpressonthePowerbuttonwillFreezeandUnfreezetheimage.

1.3.1 Standard operation

Thescannerloadsthepreferredsettingsatpoweronandisreadyforuse.

Tochangeasetting,presstheSelectbutton toswitchthemainmenuon.Intheabsenceofanybuttonpresses,theMenudisappearsafterashort(userselectable)period.UsetheUp andDown buttonstonavigatethemenuandtheSelectbuttontoswitchtherelevantSub-Menuonoroff.Innormaloperation(Sizingnotselected,see1.3.6)withnomenudisplayed,theupanddownbuttonscontroltheGainsetting.ToclearthemenuornavigatetothepreviousmenupressandholdtheSelectbutton .

1.3.2 Mode selection

Thescannerloadsthepreferredstart-upmodewhenswitchedon.PresstheSelectbuttontobringupthemenu,usethearrowbuttonstohighlight‘MODE’andpresstheSelectbuttontodisplaytheModeMenu.

UsetheUp&Downbuttonstoselectpreferredmode:

1. Detail2. FoetalSexing3. Ovary/EarlyPregnancy4. LatePregnancy

Thepreferredstart-upmodewillbestoredautomaticallywhentheunitispoweredoff.

1.3.3 Mode description

Thedetailmodeusesgreatermagnification,highfrequencyoperationandwiderdynamicrangeforsuperficialstudyoftissuesdownto6cm.TheFoetalSexingmodeprovidesoptimizedimagesettingsforfoetalsexingwork.Depthofstudyislimitedto8cm.TheOvary/Earlypregnancymodegivesalargemagnificationandusesahigherultrasoundfrequencytogivegreaterresolution.Depthofstudyislimitedto8cm.TheLaterpregnancymodeprovidesadeeperscan(upto11cm)usingalowerfrequencytoenablegreaterpenetration.

1.3.4 Gain control

Thegainmaybeadjustedviathemenu,presstheSelectbuttontobringupthemenu,usethearrowbuttonstohighlight‘Gain’andpresstheSelectbuttontodisplaytheGainMenu,thenusetheUp&DownkeystoadjusttheGain.

PressingtheUpandDownkeyswilladjusttheGain(whilethemenuisnotonscreen,andifthescannerisnotinSizingMode(neitherThresholdnorVerticalaredisplayedatthelowerleft))Thecurrentgainsetting(1-to-10)willbebrieflydisplayedatthetopofthescreen.

1.3.5 On-farm timer control

TheEasi-ScanprovidesatimerwhichcanbeusedtomonitorOn-farmtime.Itsoperationisasfollows:Select‘Timer’fromthemainmenu.TheTimerSub-Menuwillappearwiththefollowingoptions:

Exit Selectthisoptiontoexitthemenuwithoutmakinganychanges Start/Stop Selectthisoptiontostartandstopthetimer;arunningtimerisdisplayed

Note:Thetimerwillcontinuetorunevenifnotdisplayed.

Thetimervalueisstoredonpowerdownandonpoweronwillresumewiththesamevalueandsettings.

1.3.6 Follicle Sizing Mode

TheEasi-Scanprovidesaquickandsimplemethodofmeasuringfolliclesize.

TouseFollicleSizing:

1. Ensurethescannerisinovary/earlymodeandthefollicleimageisinthecentreofthescreen, freezetheimage2. Inthe‘mainmenu’select‘sizing’3. SwitchVertical‘On’,thenusingthe‘Up’or‘Down’buttonsmovethecursortothecentreof thefollicle4. SwitchVertical‘Off’andswitchThreshold‘On’5. Usethe‘Up’and‘Down’buttonsuntilthetwosmallindicatorsarepositionedattheedgesof thefollicle

Thesizeofthefolliclewillbedisplayedinmillimetersonthelowerrightofthescreen.

1.3.7 Foetal Ageing Mode

TheEasi-ScanprovidesindicatorswhichshowthesizesoftheCrownRumpLengthandTrunkDiameterofacattlefoetusatvariousstagesofdevelopment.

Note: Thescannerwilldisplaytheageinglinesinallmodesexceptdetailmode.

Selecting‘Ageing’fromthemainmenuwillbringuptheSub-Menuwhichallowstheoperatortoselectfromthefollowingindicators:5/7Weeks,6/8Weeks,7/9Weeks,9/11Weeks,10/12WeeksandOff.EachsettingwilldisplayCRLand/orTDofthecorrectsizeforafoetusofthatgestation.

1.3.8 Auto Standby Mode

TheEasi-Scanhasalowpowerstandbymode,whichcanbeenabledbyselectingadurationfromtheStandbySub-Menu.

IfthescannerdoesnotdetectanultrasoundimagefortheperiodselectedintheStandbySub-Menu,thenitswitchestolowpowermode.Inthismode,thepowerconsumptionishalvedbyusinganon-imagingscan,butultrasoundechoesarecontinuallymonitored.Ondetectingultrasoundechoesorinresponsetoanybuttonpress,thescannerimmediatelyrevertstonormalimaging.

1.3.9 Image Storage and Review

TheEasi-Scanallowstheoperatortostoreupto100imagesonthescanner.

Tostoreafrozenimage,select‘Image’fromthemainmenuandSelect‘Store’fromtheImageSub-Menu,thescannerwillthenstoretheimage.IfaCattleIDhasbeenentered,theIDwillbeoverlaidacrossthetopleftoftheimage,andthefirstfivecharactersoftheCattleIDwillformtheimagefilename.IfaPracticeIDhasbeenentered,thiswillalsobeoverlaidonthestoredimage.Oncetheimagestoragememoryisfull(100images)newlystoredimageswilloverwritetheearlieststoredimages.

Toreviewthestoredimagesonthescanner,Select‘Review’fromtheImageSub-MenuandusetheUp&Downbuttonstopagethroughthestoredimages.Thescannerdefaultstoreviewingthemostrecentlystoredimageeverytimeitisswitchedofforifanewimageisstored.Otherwiseitwillreturntothelastreviewedimageduringanyscansession.StoredimagesmaybeuploadedtoaPCusingtheUSBcableaccessory–SeeWARNINGandinstructionsinUSBImageRetrievalAppendixB.Allimagesstoredonthescannermayberemovedbyselectingthe‘DELETEALL’menuoptionavailableinReviewmode.Select‘Exit’fromtheImageSub-MenutoleaveImageReviewmode.

1.3.10 Cattle ID Entry

TheEasi-ScanallowstheoperatortoenteracattleIDnumberwhichwillbeassociatedwiththeimageonceitisstored.

IfaCattleIDhasbeenentered,onstoringanimagetheIDwillbeoverlaidacrossthetopleftoftheimage,andthefirstfivecharactersoftheCattleIDwillformtheimagefilename.TheCattleIDwillonlybedisplayedwhentheimageisfrozen.Selecting‘CattleID’fromtheMainMenu,bringsuptheCattleIDentrymenu.TheoperatorcanusetheUp&Downbuttonstoselectthedigittobechanged,pressingSelecthighlightsthedigitanditsvaluecanbechangedbyusingtheUp&Downbuttons,pressingselectagainreturnstothedigitselectionmode.ToexitthisSub-Menu,itisnecessarytoeitherwaitfortheMenutoblankorpressandholdtheSelectbuttonuntilthescannerbeepstwiceandthemenuexits.

1.3.11 Output Selection

Theoperatorcanselectfrom3differentusesonthefrontpaneluserconnector:

Caution: If you rely on a viewing device plugged into the scanner display connector, altering this setting will interrupt viewing, making it difficult to revert to correct setting. It is recommended you do not alter this setting unless you have a Wireless monitor which will continue to display regardless of changes to the Output Selection setting.

TheOutputSub-MenucanbeaccessedbySelecting‘Output’fromtheMainMenu.UseSelectbuttontochoosefromthefollowingoutputoptions;

Wristdisplay Selectingthisoptionfeedsadigitalvideosignaloutofthefrontpanel,thisoptionisusedwiththeBCFWristDisplayaccessory

Goggles SelectingthisoptionfeedsastandardgreyscaleNTSCvideosignaloutofthefrontpanel,thisoptionisusedforBCFBUGsorothergoggles,orifusingaVideoleadaccessory(e.g.forVideoPrinter)

USB SelectingthisoptionallowstheusertoconnectthescannertoacomputerviatheUSBadapteraccessory.Thismodeisusedtocopystoredimagesfromthescanner.SeeWARNINGandinstructionsinAppendixB)

Note: Ifthereisnoimageonyourconnectedviewingdevice,andyoudonothaveaWirelessmonitortofacilitatemenunavigationtoselectthecorrectvideooutputsignal,thescanneroutputcanbeswitchedbypressingandholdingthebuttoncombinations(below)whileswitchingthescanneron.

1.4 SCANNER SETUP

Preferencessuchasimageorientationandgraticulegriddisplaymaybealteredandstoredasdefaultatstart-up.TheSetupSub-MenucanbeaccessedbySelecting‘Setup’fromtheMainMenu.

1.4.1 BUGs Control

Thefirst2optionsintheSetupSub-MenuallowtheusertoadjusttheBrightnessandContrastofBCFBUGsHeadmounteddisplay.

Toadjustthesettings,SelecteitherContrastorBrightness,theword‘Adjust’willappearalongsidetheselectedoption.UsetheUp&Downbuttonstoadjustthesettings,presstheSelectbuttontoexitadjustmentmode.

1.4.2 Low Battery Warning

Whentheexternalbatteryisnearingtheendofitsusefulcapacity,theon-screenindicatorwillstarttoblink.Inaddition,byswitchingtheLowBattBuzzeroptiontoon,thescannerwillgiveanaudibleindication.

1.4.3 Grid & Graticule Display

TheEasi-Scanallowstheoperatortodisplaygridand/orgraticulelinesontheimage.Thefollowingoptionsareavailable:

1.4.6 Practice Data Entry

TheEasi-ScanallowstheoperatortoenteraPracticeNamewhichwillbeoverlaidonanyimagethatisstored.Selecting‘PracticeData’fromtheSetupSub-MenubringsupthePracticeDataentrymenu.TheoperatorcanusetheUp&Downbuttonstoselectthedigittobechanged,pressingSelecthighlightsthedigitanditsvaluecanbechangedbyusingtheUp&Downbuttons,pressingSelectagainreturnstothedigitselectionmode.ToexitthisSub-Menu,itisnecessarytoeitherwaitfortheMenutoblankorpressandholdtheSelectbuttonuntilthescannerbeepstwiceandthemenuexits.

1.4.7 Factory Reset

Selecting‘Reset’fromthisSub-Menuwillresetallsettingstofactorydefaults,storedimagesarenotaffected.

1.4.8 Menu Timer

Selecting“Short”fromthisSub-Menuwillsetthetimethemenuisdisplayedtoaboutonesecond.Selecting“Long”fromthisSub-Menuwillsetthetimethemenuisdisplayedtoaboutfourseconds.

Appendix B – USB Image Retrieval

Warning: Select USB from the Output Sub-Menu on your Scanner BEFORE connecting the USB cable. Once images have been copied, disconnect the USB cable before switching your scanner off.

Note: ThescanneridentifiesitselfasaRemovableFlashDriveandwillfunctionwithWindows,AppleandLinuxcomputers.

Toretrievestoredimagesfromthescanner,selectUSBfromtheOutputSub-Menu.ConnecttheUSBadaptercable(accessory)tothefrontpanelandconnecttheUSBplugtoacomputer.ThescannerwillidentifyitselfasaUSBFlashdrivewiththenameEasi-Scan,ifnecessary,performanymountingoperationsrequiredbyyouroperatingsystem.

Oncethedrivehasmounted,allofthestoredimageswillbevisibleasbmp(bitmap)imageswhichcanbecopiedtothecomputerandopenedinmostimageviewers.

Thescannerisreadonlyandimagescannotbedeletedviatheconnectedcomputer.TocleartheimagesstoredonthescannerdisconnecttheUSBlead,andSelect‘DELETEALL’fromthescannermenu,availablewhen‘REVIEW’isselectedfromthe‘IMAGE’sub-menu.SeeImagestorageandReviewsection.

2 Care & Maintenance2.1 EASI-SCAN & POWER PACKS

TheEasi-Scanisdesignedforreliabilityintheveterinaryandanimalhusbandrymarketplace.OurengineersandtheirappointedagentsareavailabletoproviderapidserviceassistancetoensureoptimumperformanceofBCFsystems.Howeverthereisnosubstituteforcarefulusage.

WestatethattheEasi-ScanisSPLASHPROOF,indeeditissealedtoIP65,butyoushouldnotethefollowingIMPORTANT POINTS:

1. Theunitisnotsealedagainstjetsofwater.Waterwillpenetrateyourscannerifitishoseddownorrinsedunderafastflowingtap

2. TheunitisNOTcorrosionproofandthusitshouldnotbeleftwet3. Sometypesofgogglesarenotwaterproofandcareshouldbetakentoavoidsubmersion4. Thestandalonecharger,batterychargerandchargingcarrycasearenotwaterproof–avoid

gettingthemwet

Cleaning

• Antibacterialwetwipesareparticularlyeffectiveforscanner,batteryandprobewipedown,andreducetheneedfordrying.Thispreventsproblemsrelatedtocorrosionfollowingwashdown

• Theplasticscanner,powerpackandcarrypackcanalsobecleanedusingacloth,soapandwarmwater

• Spongingdownorevenbrief,shallowsubmersionislessaggressivethanrinsingorhosingdown• Thoroughlydrythescannerbeforestorageorcharging.Takecaretodetachtheexternalpower

packandensureinterconnectareasaredryalso• NeopreneScannerwaistpouchmaybemachinewashed• Warning:Thescannerandpowerpackmustnotbestoreddamp–severecorrosionwillresult.

Seeseparatesectionforprobecare• YourequipmentshouldbereturnedperiodicallytoaBCFqualifiedserviceengineer.Theservice

agentwillusespecialtestequipmenttothoroughlychecktheinstrumentandadviseofanyworkthatappearstobenecessary.Anyotherserviceproblemsshouldbereferredtoourqualifiedserviceengineers

2.2 BATTERY CHARGING

Theexternalbatterycanbechargedinthecarrycaseeitherwhileconnectedtothescannerwiththescannerdockedorinthebatterychargingdock.Thebatterycanalsobechargedinthestandalonecharger.

ThebatteryLEDwillflashslowlywhilechargingwiththecolourindicatingthecurrentstateofcharge(Red=lessthan25%,Amber=25%–75%,Green=morethan75%.OncefullychargedtheLEDwilleithershowcontinuousgreenorarapidflashinggreen.

Allbatterieswillbechargedwithinfivehours,butwillnotbedamagedbycontinuedcharging.

TheNiMHbatteriesinthebatterypackarepairedwithchargemanagementcircuitstogiveseveralhundredrechargecycles.Whilethebatteryisinagoodconditionandisfullycharged,thescannerwillrunforthedurationbelow.Thistimewillvarydependingonthedisplayoptionused.

• Easi-Scanwithpowerpacklatched 4hours

ScannerruntimemayapproachdoublethisdurationusingtheAutoStandbyfeature.

Electricalconnectiontothepowerpackisthroughthegoldpadsonbatteryandscanner.Powerpackoutputisprotectedwitharesettingfusebutcareshouldbetakentopreventshortcircuitingthegoldconnectorpinsandpads.Batterymeteringreliesoninternalcalculation.Repeatedcyclingwithoutcompletedischargeorchargecompletionwillresultinincreasinglyinaccuratebatterylevelindication.Forpeakperformance,andformostaccuratebatterymeterindication,batteriesshouldoccasionallyberunflatfollowedbyacompletechargecycle.

Occasionally(everytencycles,oronceafortnight)dischargeuntilthescannerautomaticallyswitchesoff,followedbyacompletechargeinonego(preferablyfromthemainssupply).

2.3 EASI-SCAN PROBE

Whileeveryattempthasbeenmadetomaketheprobeasruggedaspossiblethecrystalarrayremainsvulnerableandshouldbeprotectedfromknocks.Evenasmallknockagainstahardobjectcancausedamagetotheprobeelementssituatedbehindthethinrubbercoatingontheprobeface.Theprobehasaprotectivesheathcoveringthelengthofcablesubjecttogreatestwearandflexing.Anydamagetothissheathortherestofthecableshouldberepairedbeforefurtherusetopreventmoistureingressthatwillrapidlydamagetheprobe.Theprobeshouldbecheckedregularlyforsuchdamage.
