The Terry Fox walk was held on September 28
th. Older students were buddied
with younger students as they walked to honour and re-member Terry Fox. Students were encouraged to bring a “Toonie for Terry”. In addition, staff and students were able to purchase strips of tape to tape Mr. Yanko to the wall! VRS raised $630.00 which makes our total contribution to the Terry Fox foundation over the years to more than $15000.00! Thank-you for all the contributions!

A Message from the Prairie Valley Board of Education
Welcome back! As we embark on a new school
year, I know that together, we can achieve great
things!
The partnership Prairie Valley School Division
teachers, support staff and administrators has with
all our parents and guardians is so very important.
Working together, we can shape engaged, success-
ful students able to meet both academic and life
challenges. The first step is ensuring students are
present in the classroom.
Absenteeism is the most significant predictor of
academic underachievement, disengagement
from school and failure to graduate. I am proud
to say that students in the Prairie Valley School
Division showed up to class 92 per cent of the
time last year, an improvement over the year
before. Their hard work and dedication paid off,
with student assessment results improving or
remaining constant in 13 of 17 reading and
mathematics cohorts last year.
With these results, it is obvious our students are meeting their challenges as they move grade to grade, and
the Division’s new, four year 2017-2021 Strategic Plan will continue building on this success. As a Board, we
will focus energy and effort on enhancing school community council (SCC) and community engagement in
education, strengthening First Nations and Métis influence in education governance, advocating for a
strong public education system and planning for system sustainability.
In all that we do, we will endeavour to communicate effectively with parents and SCCs and continue
demonstrating strong governance practices. We look forward to sharing the complete strategic plan with
you at the end of September.
Best wishes for a successful 2017-2018 school year!

A Message from the Prairie Valley Board of Education
October 15-21, 2017 is Education Week in Saskatchewan, a time to celebrate student
success and recognize the dedication of employees across the division.
This year’s theme: Building our Future by Learning Together, emphasizes the importance of a collaborative and inclusive learning
approach, which is a key focus for the Division.
A great education helps our children become whatever they
want to be and prepares them for whatever they might
face. Student performance results from last year show that
our students are getting better every year and this year we
are committed to celebrating this progress while also focus-
ing on continuous improvement. Working together we can
make a difference in the lives of sudents, families, commu-
nities and our province.
Another important date to remember this month is Bus Driver Appreciation Day on October 17. Your School Division employes
more than 200 bus drivers responsible for 170 bus routes spanning 27,000 square kilometers and for safely transporting 4,500
students to school every day.
In appreciation the division office will be sharing stories, videos and pictures of your drivers over the years. Stay tuned to pvsd.ca
leading up to Bus Driver Appreciation Day for the stories from your drivers. We are also encouraging schools to plan an event to
celebrate their drivers.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our bus drivers for their commitment to students and families

September Newsletter Career Counsellor News
Greetings Students and Parents:
Welcome back to all students! I hope that you enjoyed your holidays and are starting back well rested and ready to meet the
challenges of the upcoming school year. This is my 3rd year as itinerant career counsellor for Cupar, Kelliher, and Robert Sou-
they Schools, and my 1st year at Vibank Regional School. As the school year starts and students return to class, it is important
for all students to consider the many career education opportunities provided by Prairie Valley School Division. I am available
for all of the following career services: individual meetings with students to select courses and create action plans for career
goals, classroom announcements for career education and exploration opportunities, planning and registration for career
events including career fairs, support for applications to post-secondary institutions, information and support for scholarship
applications, portfolio and resume development, and information regarding questions pertaining to career education and
transitions from school to the workplace. I will be in your school each Wednesday (unless I am attending a career event). Fri-
days will be a float day for me so I will be rotating visits to my schools on that day. My contact information and calendar can
be found by going to the link below:
http://www.pvsd.ca/ProgramsServices/CareerServices/Pages/Career-Counsellors.aspx.
My first few visits will be focused on checking over transcripts, timetables, and high school graduation credit requirements for
grade 10-12 students, as well as meeting with all grade 12 students to make sure all steps are in place for a successful transi-
tion after high school completion. I also will be helping students and staff as our division transitions from Career Cruising to
MyBlueprint as PVSD’s new licensed career website.
I have provided a list of Grade 12 Timeline items below that are important during the first two months of school. I am incredi-
bly excited to begin my work at Vibank Regional, and I look forward to meeting with you and helping you take steps on your
career pathway.
