INNOVATION CENTERSTEMnasium: Where relevant learning is

sySTEMic

Current status of STEM

● SCASD provides many robust STEM and STEM-like learning experiences for students

● We are strong in STEM content areas science, technology, engineering and math, (traditional STEM subjects) as well as art, music and humanities that support STEM

Defining Innovation, Integration and STEM:

● Innovation: Creative Problem-Solving* Incremental and Disruptive

● Integration: Collaboration, communication and innovation that combines subject areas to solve problems and gain a deeper understanding.

● STEM: The integration of science, technology, engineering & math, and other relevant content areas (art, health, and humanities, etc.), to creatively solve complex problems, now and in the future, through project-based learning.

Examples of STEM learningTechnology Education:● Lunar Lion Project● Laser Engraving● Microbial Fuel Cell● 3D Printing● Solar Water Heater● Wind Turbine● Rocketry

Ag Science:● Biodiesel● Biomass● Vertical Gardening● Hydroponics● Repurposing/Recycling-Sustainability● CNC Plasma Cutting- Welding Lab● Fuels lab partnered with chemistry

Examples of STEM learning

Engineering:

● Rube Goldberg Challenge● Boat Construction Challenge● Robotics-Sumo Robot Challenge● CADD/CAM/CNC● Trumpet Challenge Solution● 3D printing of robot/machine parts

Examples of STEM learning

Science:● Aquaponics● Water Testing● Solar Water Heater● Digital Image Process (Computer generated

enhancement of telescope images)● Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars● 3D printing of viruses/bacteria in Anatomy &

Physiology course

Examples of STEM learning

Building Construction Technology:● Smart House (net zero computerized energy efficient

house) Off the grid.● PSI Structural Concrete Test Competition● “Shed in a Day” Student Collaborative Initiative● ECO-Cabin● Energy Lab● Enviro-Friendly/Sustainable Material Testing● Thermal Energy Wall Panel Exploration

Examples of STEM learning

Math:

● Math is embedded and integrated in all STEM curriculum.

● Math is required to be taught in context for all CTC Programs of Study.

What will students do in the Innovation Center?

● They will be creating, making, building, shaping, and inventing.

● They will innovate, communicate, think critically, collaborate, problem solve, fail, succeed, fail again, and succeed wildly.

● Students will do everything previously noted but with greater opportunity to collaborate across disciplines in a space specifically designed for this function.

● It will be a place to integrate subjects… bring all disciplines together.

● Do more of this:

Who will use the Innovation Center?

● Current Programs: Engineering, Agriculture,Technology Education, Auto, Building Construction, Science, Math, Art,...

● Future Programs: Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, and emerging technologies yet to be discovered

● Co-Curricular opportunities

What is the primary function of the Innovation Center?

● Support the STEM Learning community.● Provide an adequate and appropriate STEM

facility that is conducive to collaboration, innovation, and project-based learning.

● Provide a place where all students can benefit from real world experiences and skill development.

Current STEM with room to grow:Building Construction Technology

Structural Concrete Materials Competition:-Who could be our partners in an SLC Collaboration as dozens of students plan, outline, create, then test…..and evaluate results...(Science, Physics, Engineering, Architecture, Art, History, Math, Chemistry)-currently we can not accommodate more than our program students, but given a larger more flexible area the real world application of this event could be tied to dozens of programs.

Current STEM AquaponicsScience

STEM for Community Service: “Habitat Shed in a Day”

Students K-12 with partners in our community, creating for our community, students teaching students, while using what they learned.

-instead of a “shed in a day” with 25 people, imagine …”sheds or a house in a day” with 250..

STEM Engineering

Cardboard boats, 3D printing, Rube Goldberg...

STEM Engineering

Musical Instruments, Vacuum Forming, Plastics

This is a slice of what we are currently doing

Here is what we could be doing:The space will benefit teaching and learning by providing a dedicated area essential to collaboration among teachers and students, and the integration of subjects.

The Innovation Center...We could be doing more integrated STEM here:

The Innovation Center Will Benefit Clubs and Activities

● Skills USA● HOSA (Health Occupations Student Assoc.)● Science Olympiad● Robotics Club● TSA (Technology Student Association)● FFA (Future Farmers of America)● National Association of Home Builders

Student Association

How important is innovation?

What are we not doing that we could be doing?

● Smart House - Net zero computer controlled energy efficient house

● ECO Car Challenge - Using hydrogen fuel● First Robotic International Competition - We

have a small number of SCASD students who go elsewhere for the experience.

● All of the above and more with “true” interdisciplinary integration & collaboration

What else are we not doing that we could be doing? Cool stuff like...
