Types of Places Commonwealth-Supported Places (CSP).
These places are standard Commonwealth supported (formerly HECS) places and do not carry any additional restrictions or obligations.
Bonded Medical Places (BMP)
25% of Commonwealth supported places must be set aside as Bonded Medical Places.
Require you to (at the end of your training) practice in a designated area of need. An area of need is a district of workforce shortage as defined by the Commonwealth Government (and not necessarily in a rural location).
Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Places (MRBS)
The scholarship amount is $23,686 (in 2010) and is indexed annually, tax free, not subject to a means test and received yearly for as long as it normally takes to complete the medical degree.
Students agree to practice in rural or remote areas of Australia for six continuous years upon completion of basic medical and vocational training as a specialist (including general practice).
The scholarship is formalised in a contract between successful applicants and the Commonwealth Government and there are penalties for breaking the contract strip you of Medicare provider licence.
Full-Fee Places
Exactly what it sounds like. Only a few unis offer these for domestic students.
Choosing Preferences
6 Preferences – candidates are matched to the highest ranked university for which they are competitive for
Rank within each preference, type of place preference.
If you are below the minimum criteria for a certain university you will not be considered for an interview or a place
Most Unis have minimum entry criteria e.g. 5.00 GPA, GAMSAT score of 50 in each section
NOTE: If you interview at #3, you can only be considered for preferences 3-6, not 1-2
Choosing a university, what qualities are you after? Large vs. small cohort
Rural vs. metropolitan focus
Victoria vs. interstate
