1. Introduction to the work placement programme
Summary Objectives
The overall objective of including a placement opportunity as part of your studies is to enhance your degree qualification and your personal development by:
• Providing you with an understanding of how organisations operate • Developing your skills, competencies and knowledge • Relating academic knowledge to your work placement • Allowing you to develop key transferable skills such as communication and team working • Helping you to prepare for your future career and to make decisions about the specific
direction in which you wish to progress • Helping to make you more employable when you graduate
Placement duration and timing
This handbook relates to the module BRM6030 Industrial Work Experience. The duration of the work experience is for a full year and will be undertaken between Levels 5 and 6 (years 2 and 3 of study). By undertaking this you will therefore extend your degree studies to 4 years and return at the end of the placement period to complete your final academic year.
2. Before you begin your placement
Before you begin your placement there are several things that must do and a number of things that it would be useful for you to know. You have to complete the following processes so that the Work Placement Team and the University are fully aware of your circumstances
It is likely that you will have applied directly to an organisation to obtain the year out placement and will have had an interview before receiving an offer. Once you have decided to accept the placement please email your Programme Director to inform them of your wish to accept the placement and your intention to extend your course of study to four years by completing a year in industry. The Programme Director will then inform Registry of your intention and you will be placed on the sandwich degree programme and enrolled onto the Industrial Work Experience module BRM6030
Fees: Please be aware that you are liable for tuition fees during your year on placement. This is currently set at £1800.

Health & Safety Awareness Pre-Work Placement Training - Mandatory
Before beginning your placement you must complete and pass an on-line Health & Safety test.
The module (Health & Safety Awareness Pre-Work Placement Training) is available through
Blackboard and is a mandatory requirement of the placement module.
Read the Course Content within the Module Documents and then take the 20 question multiple choice
test. You have to obtain a pass of 15/20 (150/200). If you do not do so you may re-take the test as
many times as you wish until this mark is achieved.
Whilst out on placement you have a responsibility to ensure at all times that you are diligent in the
way you act and behave, so as not to cause danger to yourself or others who operate under the
control of the placement provider.
3. Approval of your Placement
Once you receive a placement offer from an employer please contact the Work Placement Team with the details as we will need to approve it. We will also require that you complete the following:
• Employer Offer Letter and Contract Please supply the Work Placement Team with a photocopy of the placement offer letter and a copy of the contract to confirm your role and the dates of your placement.
• Learning Undertaking Please read, sign and return a copy of the Learning Undertaking Appendix I. This outlines your obligations to the work placement process and the requirement to behave in a professional manner
• Student Placement Approval and Health & Safety Checklist (Employer) The employer must complete sign and return the Placement Approval and Health & Safety checklist Appendix J. We require a named placement provider and his/ her contact details. The employer is also required to complete and sign the Health & Safety checklist. This form should be returned to the Work Placements Team before the start of the placement or as near to the start date as is reasonably practicable. Cardiff School of Management has a moral and legal duty of care for its students which must continue to be exercised, as far as is reasonably practicable, when students are on work placements with external providers. Before approving a placement the CSM is required to assess the safety environment into which the student is to be sent, to ensure that placement providers are fully aware of their safety responsibilities to the student while on placement with them. The assessment of the safety of the working environment of your placement is made through the completion of this Health & Safety checklist. Certificate of Employer’s Liability Insurance: The CSM only requires a copy of this certificate if the company has 10 or fewer employees.

***IMPORTANT NOTE***
• You MUST complete the Health & Safety Training as described above, AND
• return the Learning Undertaking, AND
• return the Student Placement Approval Form and H&S Checklist as well as a copy of your offer letter/contract.
Without these three mandatory requirements, your placement will NOT be valid and you will fail the module.
If any details of your placement provider change while the placement is underway please inform the Work Placement Team immediately.
Additional information for International Students
For those students subject to immigration restrictions, your ability to work will depend on the conditions written on your student visa. Requirements change on a regular basis; we therefore recommend that you access the UK Border Agency Website for further details (www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk)

4. Aims, Learning Outcomes & Assessment Methods
Aims
The aim of this module is to allow you an opportunity to undertake a full year secondment to gain experience in an organisation relevant to your degree award. The overall aims of any professional work placement programme can be summarised as follows:
• Build links between theory and practice by providing practical experience of work, reinforcing and complementing the academic components of your course of study
• Allow you to learn new management and technical skills , and of course to reinforce and complement your existing academic and professional skills
• Develop and exercise your critical thinking within a practical theoretical and professional context
• Encourage self development through critical reflection • Gain experience of and identify with a professional role. • Acquire knowledge, key skills and competencies relevant to the subject discipline, the
workplace and to latter stages of study in your course programme • Develop the communication and observational skills that lead to better understanding of the
subject culture of your chosen placement organisation.
Learning Outcomes:
After you have successfully completed your year-out placement you will be able to:
• Undertake operational, supervisory and where possible, management tasks and duties within the organisation;
• Critically evaluate and understand organisational and management structures. • Critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic and coherent body of knowledge with
regards to operational effectiveness, functional constraints and opportunities for development • Critically review your personal contribution to the organisation, and be able to describe
explicitly the skills gained through the work placement and their transferability to other employment, your programme of study and life situations;
• Demonstrate both the process and outcomes of reflection through the use of a reflective log and the presentation of the agreed work-based project

Assessment methods
At the conclusion of your work placement you will be required to produce the following pieces of work:
A 4000 word fully Harvard referenced reflective Report
A 30 minute Project Presentation about the experience
Reflective Logs maintained through Blackboard
Placement Provider Appraisal Form
Submission dates will be provided on your return to Cardiff Met but will be some time during the autumn term.
You will be assessed on how well you have met the learning outcome requirements of your placement module in the following way:
• Project Presentation - 30 minutes (weighting 20%), date of submission will be advised on your return to Cardiff Metropolitan University.
For your presentation, you will be required to describe, analyse and reflect on the operations of your placement organisation and evaluate your own contribution to the organisation and detail the outcome of your work experience, including conclusion and recommended action. At the end of the presentation, your assessment tutor will provide verbal feedback on what you have achieved.
See Appendix F for guidance on how to make an effective presentation, and Appendix G for the Presentation Assessment Form.
• Reflective Report - 4000 words, fully Harvard referenced (weighting 60%). In your report you will analyse managerial activities, the functional areas and the nature and impact of recent organisational changes, and the detail of your project including objectives set and how these have been achieved. You will be required to analyse the learning which has taken place throughout the work placement. This report will assess the achievement of the learning outcomes detailed in the Module Descriptor on Blackboard. (see also Appendix A).
• Reflective Log – (weighting 10%) You are required to maintain a monthly reflective log, the detail of which should be recorded within Blackboard. This log is private to you but will be accessed by your placement tutor and the Work Placement team. This is an assessed part of the module and will be marked on-line.
• Employers Report - 500 word equivalency (weighting 10%), date of submission as above. At the end of your placement your employer will be requested to complete a short report on your performance during your placement period see Appendix H. This report will relate back to the relevant general learning outcomes of the work placement and your overall performance in the work place.

Assessment Criteria
See Appendix B for the Assessment Criteria which will be applied to the assessment tasks as set out above during the marking process.
Support and Guidance for Assessments
Please note that CSM Personal Tutors are able to assist and give guidance on Harvard referencing, and reflective thinking/writing.
How to submit
The report has to be submitted electronically through ‘Turnitin’ and in paper form to the I-Zone, Llandaff Campus, by the date required and published on Blackboard.
Other circumstances- plagiarism/unfair means/late submissions/mitigating circumstances/extensions requests and absence with good cause

During your Placement Year - Support & Monitoring
When you have started your placement you will be monitored and supported throughout by the Cardiff School of Management. Below is an explanation of the monitoring process and support that is available to you. This section also outlines your responsibilities whilst on placement as both an employee and an ambassador of the Cardiff School of Management.
1) Work Placement Team
The Work Placement Team will be to be your first point of contact in respect of your placement should there be any queries or problems in relation to required aims and learning outcomes. They may refer you to other mechanisms available to support you during your placement, and they will be available to you by phone and email. They will also be responsible for marking your assignment.
The Work Placement Team will also be your point of contact if you have any administrative issues or queries during your placement, either associated with your placement or regarding your return to the CSM.
2) Blackboard
The Work Placement site on Blackboard will be available for you for your reflective diary. Blackboard also provides additional learning material designed to help you get the most out of your experience.
3) Placement Provider Support during your Placement
• The CSM Placement Providers Handbook is available to the employer through the website www.cardiffmet.ac.uk/csmworkplacements
• The Work Placement team are also available to answer additional queries • Throughout the placement period your employer will need to provide you with reasonable
access to IT facilities, email, the internet and a telephone. • Your provider will be required to provide a responsible and designated placement mentor for
you whilst you are on placement. We hope that your mentor will be your first point of contact within the organisation; help you to understand your placement organisation, your role, the skills you need and how best you will be able to develop them You should ideally be introduced to your mentor during the first week of your placement. If this does not happen, please ask your Line Manager or your contact in the Personnel Department to introduce you to them. You could also contact the Work Placement team if you would like them to intervene. It would be helpful if you could then establish regular meetings with your mentor on an appropriate basis, for example, monthly catch ups. This need only be for fifteen minutes to half an hour but it is important that the opportunity is there for you to ask any questions or air any issues that may have arisen.

Placement Provider / Employer Report
At the end of your placement your line manager will be requested to complete a short report on your performance during your placement period (see Appendix H, Placement Provider Appraisal Form). The report will be used in the academic assessment of your placement (10%). It can also be used as a reference when you apply for jobs in the future.
Your responsibilities and rights on placement
Student or Employee?
If you undertake a full year out secondment, you will be very much an employee during your placement period. You are accountable to your provider and will have a manager to whom you will report and be responsible to during this period. Unless something unusual occurs the CSM expects that you will deal directly with your provider in all matters relating to your work whilst you are on placement.
You will be subject to the normal employment conditions and practices of your employing organisation, together with the rights and protections given to you under current employment legislation. It is important to keep in mind that if you behave in a way that is contrary to normal employment practices you may well be subject to the provider’s disciplinary codes and processes. You will also fail your work placement module.
During your placement, you also have a responsibility to the CSM, and we expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner that reflects well on yourself, the provider and the CSM.
You may keep in regular contact with the Work Placement Team via email or telephone to let them know how things are progressing. If you are having any problems then let them know immediately, do not wait until the problem gets ‘out of control’. Also let them know of the successes you are having, you don’t have to wait until there is something negative to report!
Finally, you do need to visit the Blackboard site regularly as important news, announcements and materials will be posted there from time to time. We may also use your Cardiff Met email address to provide you with important information during your placement period. It is important, therefore, that you check this on a regular basis.
Question & Concerns
If you feel whilst on your placement that anything is jeopardising your learning opportunity it is important that you notify the Work Placement Team. They will also provide you with support should you have any more general problems.
In the event of a work placement coming to a premature end through no fault of your own, the CSM will endeavour to support you in finding another work placement of a similar nature and in a similar location as soon as possible. However, such places cannot be guaranteed and where a placement fails and no alternative can be found you will be given the option of taking an alternative module, subject to time constraints.

Programme Evaluation and Development
We need to know about your experiences whilst you are preparing for and then on the work placement, so that we can monitor the success of the programme and look at ways to improve it.
At the conclusion of your placement, you may be required to complete an Evaluation Questionnaire, which will be taken into account by the Work Placement Team when they prepare their year end report/audit. This questionnaire should be issued to you after the completion of your placement module.
This annual report will be submitted to the CSM Director of Learning and Teaching, so that any necessary actions to improve the programme can be agreed and implemented

Appendix B Assessment Criteria

70 and above Grade A
Demonstrates a full and detailed understanding of the set task and an ability to have met the learning outcomes and address the assessment criteria at an excellent level. The standard of presentation is high and the format appropriate. The student is able to comment perceptively and with insight on the relationship between theory and practice. Exhibits an ability to undertake detailed analysis and critical enquiry by making excellent use of a number of appropriate techniques. There is strong evidence that the student is able to reflect effectively on her/his own practice. Critical evaluation of the student’s own work and/or professional practice is highly perceptive and there is a full awareness of the implications for future development.
60 – 69 Grade B
Shows a full understanding of the set task and an ability to have met the learning outcomes and address the assessment criteria at a good level. Work is well presented and the format appropriate. Indicates an ability to undertake detailed analysis and critical enquiry relevant to the task/discipline by making use of appropriate techniques and has considerable success in presenting and commenting on outcomes. There is some linkage between theory and practice. Demonstrates an ability to engage in reflective practice and to take account of personal evaluations when planning for future development.
50 – 59 Grade C
Exhibits a secure understanding of the set task and an ability to have met the associated learning outcomes and address the assessment criteria at a satisfactory level. Overall, the structure and format of the work are appropriate. There may be occasional faults in the presentation of work (e.g. inaccuracies in syntax, spelling and punctuation in written work) but overall, these do not detract from the clarity of expression. Indicates an ability to utilise some techniques to undertake analysis and enquiry relevant to the task/discipline and generally has success in presenting and commenting on outcomes. Demonstrates, at times, an ability to critically evaluate and reflect although there may be some over-reliance on description and factual presentation. There is some evidence of the student’s ability to evaluate and reflect on her/his own practice but reflections may lack insight and the implications for future development may be underestimated.

Shows a basic understanding of the set task and an ability to have met the associated learning outcomes and address the assessment criteria at a threshold level. Generally, the work is appropriately structured although key points may not be logically sequenced. Although there will be faults in the presentation of work (e.g. inaccuracies in syntax, spelling and punctuation in written work), generally, the meaning is still clear. Demonstrates an ability to undertake some limited analysis and enquiry relevant to the task/discipline and has intermittent success in presenting and commenting on outcomes. Exhibits a limited ability to critically evaluate and reflect. Although some critical reflection is evident, the balance within the work is likely to be in favour of description and factual presentation. There is some evidence of the student’s ability to evaluate and reflect on her/his own practice although reflections may be limited and superficial with little consideration of their relevance for future development
Below 40 FAIL
Partial or minimal understanding of the set task and an ability to have met some of the associated learning outcomes at a basic level. However, attainment is uneven with some learning outcomes not met and some assessment criteria unaddressed. Frequent faults in the presentation of work (e.g. inaccurate syntax, spelling and punctuation in written work) and significant difficulties in its structure and organisation detract from the clarity and meaning overall. Demonstrates little evidence of being able to undertake enquiry and analysis relevant to the task/discipline. Self-evaluation and reflections on her/his own practice are negligible or absent.

Work Placement Report (weighting 60% of total mark)
The work placement report should be a maximum of 4000 words, fully Harvard referenced,
and should be submitted through Turnitin with a hard copy to I-Zone no later than Thursday 20th November 2014.
In your report, you are required to reflect on your placement experiences and the outcome of
your project or work experience. You are asked to evaluate your personal and professional
development and to include reflection on the impact the work placement experience may
have on your future career plans. In addition you will analyse the functional areas of the
organisation you have been working with, managerial activities and the details of any

Descriptor, which you can find on Blackboard. You will find detail of the Aims, Learning

Throughout your placement you should also have been maintaining a Reflective Log. You
will find it useful to look back over your total experience when writing your report, the
suggested format for which is shown on the next page.
The content of the report will be partly dependent upon the type of work placement
undertaken but you should carefully follow the required report format and pay attention to the
marking guidance for each section of the report. Failure to comply could lose you valuable
marks.

WRIT1 Report Structure
Please follow this Report Structure, paying close attention to the allocation of marks for each
section (shown as a percentage).
Overall Report Presentation 5%
You will be marked for overall presentation of your report, formatting, spelling and grammar
so it is important to follow these guidelines:
• Front/Cover Page - must show your Name, Student Number, Programme of study,
Module Number and Title, Placement Provider Name and date of report.
• Include a Contents Page which clearly shows the sections of the report and associated
page numbers. (Each page of the report must show your Student Name, Student
Number and must be numbered).
• The report can be written in first person as you will be writing a personal account of your
time in placement and reflecting on the skills learned.
• Use the font Arial 12 with 1.5 line spacing.
• Each section of the report should be numbered as per the Report Structure, and on a
new page with the heading in Arial 12 Bold.
• Academic References (minimum of 5). Any theory should be correctly referenced using
the Harvard Referencing system. (See Personal Tutors for a referencing guide if you do
not already have one).

1. Introduction 10%
The introduction should clearly describe where and with whom the placement took place,
what the placement organisation does, a brief history, number of employees, etc.
2. Nature of the Role within the Organisation(s) 10%
This section should clearly describe your role and the nature of your work during the
placement. Outline any responsibilities and tasks associated with your role, and give details
of any projects that may have been allocated to you during that time.
At this point it is suggested that you make reference to the requirement to maintain a
Reflective Log and briefly how you went about this. (Please note however that you are not
required to attach the log to this report).
3. The Organisation(s) and Recommendations 25%
You should reflect on the work placement organisation(s), making appropriate references to
supporting academic literature. Conduct a SWOT analysis on the organisation. (15%)
Make appropriate recommendations based on your analysis of the organisation. (The actual
SWOT analysis should be attached as an appendix at the back of the report, and you should
discuss it in this section). (10%)
4. Reflection on Skills Development 25%
You should write in a reflective and critical manner, identifying new skills and experiences
acquired during the placement, along with any existing skills that were developed further as
a result of your placement. (10%)
Identify any gaps in your skills, knowledge or experience. Discuss how you might address
these issues and suggest appropriate strategies to manage these. Conduct a personal
SWOT Analysis to help analyse your skills, knowledge or experience. (The SWOT analysis
should be attached as an appendix and discussed in this section). (10%)

Support your writing with evidence through specific actions undertaken during the placement
and, where appropriate, make reference to learning theories such as Gibbs’ Model of
Reflection or Kolb. (5%)

How to make an effective presentation
Giving a presentation is a life skill, and one that employers expect all graduates to have. Use the experience you have at university to develop this skill and practice making a persuasive presentation.
As part of the assessment for BRM 6030 – Industrial Work Experience you are required to make a presentation for 30 minutes as a prerequisite for 20% of the mark for the module. The marking criteria are attached here so it is possible to see the distribution of marks for each section.
These notes are intended to assist you in making that presentation but they are not prescriptive and additional help is available elsewhere.
Some early thoughts……
• You are giving this talk as part of an assessed piece of work • You will be speaking to a small audience consisting of perhaps two or three
academics and your peer group of those who also undertook a year out • You will be talking about the year you spent out on placement working full
time. • The audience will expect you to describe the experience and the task you
undertook and where possible any management tasks and duties undertaken; to review your contribution to the organisation and to describe in detail the skills gained through the placement.
• To reflect upon what you have learnt and to evaluate your own progress and development
• You will be expected to include academic references in the presentation • You will be allocated approximately 30 minutes to cover and will take

Further preparation
Look over the presentation carefully to make sure it meets its objectives, make sure it is well structured and that the content is right
Visuals - prepare your slides. You will probably use PowerPoint but may also looks to use Prezi http://prezi.com/
Ensure your slides are clear and that text is easily read (24 points or larger)
Don’t put too much information on a slide
Watch the over use of colour-keep the themes simple
Practice, practice, practice, to get used to the sound of your own voice, to check the length of the presentation and once you are happy with it present to a friend or family member.
Try not to read from a script as this can appear wooden but you may try writing notes on cue cards of all the main points, taking care to keep them in order or to fasten them together loosely.
When speaking to your audience make eye contact around the room in a friendly way. Speak slowly and clearly and make sure you are audible
Move and gesture if you wish but avoid pacing or fiddling with your hands or a pen, for example
