What’s a quick and easy way to add value to your Imaging/
Color/Photo Science degree? Help RIT keep its Salary and
Program Information for employers accurate! Employers,
especially those unfamiliar with the term “Imaging Science”,
often use this information to gauge how well an Imaging
Science applicant might fit job requirements, and to determine
how much salary to offer. We're confident that with more
students and alumni reporting, Imaging Science will stand out
even more as a field in demand by employers. This will lead to
even more value for your degree!
CIS strongly encourages those who have recently graduated and
those working on co-op to report your information to RIT's
Office of Co-op and Career Services. Having this data available
is helpful to fellow students and prospective employers to
understand ranges of competitive salaries. Salary data is
updated frequently so the statistics are not stale.
Full-time salary information is collected automatically from
graduates who complete an online form. (Note that you need
to login, but salary info is pulled anonymously for the table.)
Also, nothing is reported on the webpage unless at least 3
entries have been made. Co-op data is collected via phone/
email using the contact info below.
Please help us collect this anonymous but extremely
valuable data! If you have any questions, or are willing to help
but are uncomfortable with using the online form, please
contact our liaison in the Career Services & Co-op office, Lisa
Vasaturo (lmvoce@rit.edu, 585-475-5460).

PREVIOUSLY ENJOYED ——————————————————————
Boston, MA— CIS took part in a College of Science event in
Boston on Sunday, April 21 at Restaurant dante. Of the nearly
40 attendees, five imaging/photo science alumni joined in, as
well as one current student and one prospective (and now
committed!) student, who also happens to be a past summer
intern. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeurves while overlooking the
Charles River.
The Hunt—CIS continued the tradition of the annual Hunt on
April 27. An All Stars team consisting of alumni and faculty/
staff (who also happened to be alumni) managed to stave off
the stiff competition (who have the benefit of combining forces
with Motion Picture Science students) to win first place. This
year’s list, as well as the videos from all the participating
teams, can be viewed here.
Washington, DC— CIS held the 7th annual DC alumni reception
in Tyson’s Corner on Sunday, June 2. Forty CIS alumni with
graduation years spanning over 4 decades came out for the
event, which featured a special tribute to Dr. John Schott in
recognition of his many years of teaching and his recent
induction into the Innovation Hall of Fame. COS Distinguished
Alumnus John Roberts (BS Imaging Science ‘70) also joined the
party, as did one of this year’s summer interns. Some photos
from the event can be viewed here.
STILL TO COME ——————————————————————–————
Stay tuned for announcements for upcoming events in
Rochester and Philadelphia!
If you or any of your fellow alumni are attending upcoming
conferences and would like CIS to sponsor an alumni reception,
please contact Bethany Choate. We would be happy to arrange
a gathering!
Dr. Bruce Smith (‘86 BS, ‘89 MS, ‘95 PhD Imaging Science) and Dr. John Schott have been named to the Fourth Class of Inductees into the RIT Innovation Hall of Fame, joining 18 visionaries previously inducted, including Chester Carlson. Their photos and description of their work will be displayed in the Albert J. Simone Center for Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Smith and Schott, along with four others, were honored with an induction ceremony with RIT President Bill Destler and Provost Jeremy Haefner on May 3. The following day, the inductees held a panel discussion as part of the Imagine RIT: Innovation and Creativity Festival. Videos were produced to honor each of the inductees and celebrate their impressive bodies of work. These videos are
available on YouTube:

CIS proudly congratulates nine BS Imaging Science, twelve MS
Imaging Science, two MS Color Science, and nine PhD Imaging
Science graduates successfully completing their degrees in
2013. Graduating Imaging Science students Colin Axel (BS) and
Siddharth Khullar (PhD) were selected to speak on behalf of
College of Science Undergraduates and all Graduate students,
respectively at the RIT-wide Academic Convocation. As
delegates, both also addressed the COS at its Commencement
Ceremony, as did COS distinguished alumnus John Roberts (BS
Imaging Science ‘70). A full list of BS and MS graduates can be
found here, and a list of PhD graduates with their dissertation
titles is located here. Congratulations, Graduates!!!

CIS Achievements and Recognitions
Imaging Science graduate student Phil Salvaggio (BS Imaging
Science and Computer Science ‘12) has been awarded a
Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science
Foundation for his research in computer modeling of complex
and novel optical systems, such as sparse optical systems. This
comes only one year after Imaging Science PhD students David
Kelbe and Alexandra Artusio-Glimpse were also awarded NSF
fellowships. “Earning Graduate Research Fellowships from the
National Science Foundation two years in a row is a significant
accomplishment,” says RIT graduate dean Hector Flores. “The
national average for institutions being awarded these honors
consecutively is about 15 percent. RIT’s rate of success is 40
percent, which is a testament to the excellence of our doctoral
researchers-in-training.” Read More
Second-year Imaging Science undergraduate students Rose
Rustowicz and Malachi Schultz recently traveled to Hawaii to
speak at two conferences. The conferences were the Hawaii
University International Conference on Education and
Technology and the 26th International Conference on the First
Year Experience. Rustowicz and Schultz gave talks centering on
the Innovative Freshman Experience course. Four additional CIS
students will give presentations about the program at the 2013
STEMtech Conference in Atlanta in October. Read More

Get Involved: Alumni Admissions
Many alumni have asked: How can I help my alma mater and
increase the enrollment in Imaging Science? One way is to
volunteer as an Alumni Admissions Officer! You can assist our
efforts with the Office of Admissions to recruit qualified
students to study Imaging Science at RIT. By representing CIS/
RIT at area college fairs or participating in Admissions
receptions in your area, you can play an important role in
helping prospective students learn more about CIS and RIT.
Even better, when you represent CIS at such events, you
qualify for rewards via the CIS Ambassador Program. Becoming
an Alumni Admissions Officer is easy—simply contact CIS
Outreach Specialist Bethany Choate, and she will both connect
you with the Admissions Office and arrange to send you CIS
informational materials along with your very own CIS Polo Shirt
to wear to the event.
Starting with this newsletter and continuing in each issue,
upcoming Alumni Admissions Officer events in our top 5 most
CIS-alumni populated metro areas (Rochester, DC, San Fran,
Philly, Boston) will be posted, so you’ll know when one is
coming up in your neck of the woods. By sharing your
experiences as an imaging/color/photo science student and
professional, you can help introduce prospective students to
the unique opportunities available only through CIS at RIT! We
hope you’ll join our efforts.
Science and technology are constantly evolving, and throughout
the years our Imaging Science degree programs have updated
their curricula to keep up with the vigorous pace. Now, we
have started to consider whether the academic field name we
use, "Imaging Science", properly reflects what our faculty/
students/alumni learn and do, the careers they pursue, and the
position titles they hold. We also find that prospective students
have difficulty finding us, given confusion with other degree
programs on RIT's campus, and the naming of radiology and
related medical imaging units as "imaging science" in hospitals
nationwide further muddies the waters. And then there is the
problem that, as a highly interdisciplinary program, we are
halfway between science and engineering! So we are
investigating whether there is a better alternative name for the
Imaging Science degree programs. PLEASE NOTE: The Chester
F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science will remain named as
such. We are only investigating name changes for the academic
programs and degrees.
We would like to know your take: Based on your experience
and knowledge of the industry, what name would best
represent "Imaging Science"? Use this submission form to
anonymously submit your thoughts and suggestions!
Deadline for responses is August 30. After collecting initial
responses, a second survey will become available in September
that will allow you to rank your favorites.
