Database Notes
SQL Server Express If you install and run SQL Server Express on the same machine as Kingdom, we recommend a workstation with a minimum of 4 GB of physical memory. Also note that performance can be substantially improved for large projects by adding additional RAM.
If multiple users are going to access the SQL Server Express projects, you should install SQL Server Express on a network accessible machine. With the Auto version of SQL Server Express, if the instance is on the network, the Kingdom projects must also be on the network, not on individual workstations.
If you have installed SQL Server Express on a networked server and you are using the Manual portability configuration, you must run the SQL Server Express Management Tools from that server in order to make projects portable or re-attach portable projects.
SQL Server allows user accounts of different privileges to be assigned to the same database. For example, one account has a full DBCREATOR role, while the lesser logins only have DataReader and DataWriter privileges at the database level. This prevents unauthorized creation of additional databases or unintended project upgrades.
Oracle Kingdom requires Oracle project administrators to have CREATE TABLE, CREATE VIEW, and CREATE TRIGGER system privileges to create and upgrade projects. Your Oracle DBA will need to add this privilege for each project administrator before upgrading or creating Kingdom projects. After project creation or upgrades are complete, then table and view privileges rights can be withdrawn for non-administrative Kingdom users. If a two-tiered security system of user privileges is required, then table synonyms must be created to enable the second Oracle user account to see the schema of the original account. While feasible, this has not been tested or certified by IHS.
Special Considerations on Region and Language Settings Kingdom does not support some language alphabets and alphabets that use special characters. Known issues exist with the Cyrillic alphabet and letters that contain the Tilde special character. Also be aware of the number format of your data, notably the decimal symbol and the digit grouping symbol. Check your Region and Language settings on your computer to make sure that they conform to your data.
1. In the Control Panel select Clock, Language, and Region or Region and Language depending on your Control Panel display setting.
2. On the Formats tab click Additional Settings. 3. On the Numbers tab, select the Decimal symbol that matches your data.
When entering numeric data, the decimal symbol must be a decimal, not a comma. Also, even if you have imported data with the comma defined as the decimal symbol, the data will display with the decimal symbol as a period.

Hardware Requirements Every customer environment is different and evolving. We strongly recommend that customers work with their IT departments and consulting services to define their actual hardware needs. The information provided is a guideline and not meant to be authoritative.
Processor and Random Access Memory (RAM) Kingdom can potentially access up to 128 GBs of RAM and 8 TBs of virtual memory, depending on the amount of RAM on the workstation. When configuring a 64-bit workstation see the table below to determine your configuration based on the following minimum recommendations.
Project Size Description Minimum Requirement
Large Regional • More than 200,000 wells with digital log curves, raster logs, and production data.
• Hundreds to thousands of 2D lines. • More than 10,000 square miles of 3D seismic.
32 GB RAM
16 CPU Cores
Large • 50,000 to 200,000 wells with some digital log curves, raster logs, and production data
• More than 500 2D lines • 200 to 10,000 square miles of 3D seismic
16 GB RAM
8 CPU Cores
Small • Less than 5000 wells with no monthly production data, a moderate number of digital log curves, and no raster logs
• Less than 500 2D lines • 200 square miles of 3D seismic
8 GB RAM
8 CPU Cores
Disk Drive Recommendations For Kingdom projects stored on a local workstation or a network file server, IHS recommends the following:
• Project data stored on a local workstation: 15,000 RPM SAS drives. • Project data stored on a file server:
o 7,200 RPM SATA drives are sufficient for the local workstation. o Solid State Disks (SSD) provide the best performance on a local workstation.

Upgrading Projects to Kingdom 2016.1 You can upgrade individual Kingdom projects or you can upgrade multiple projects at the same time. We recommend that you create a full backup of any Kingdom project you plan to upgrade. The project backup needs to include a database backup as well as any other project files (for example, seismic files, grids, horizons, and faults).
To upgrade a single project to Kingdom 2016.1, simply open the project with Kingdom 2016.1. Kingdom prompts you to upgrade, and performs the upgrade for you automatically if you choose to upgrade. To upgrade multiple Kingdom installations at the same time, use the Kingdom Project Upgrade Tool: Start > All Programs > IHS Kingdom [version] > Project Upgrade Tool.
Upgrading from 2015 or earlier to 2016 The following items are unique to a Kingdom 2016 project upgrade:
• Kingdom 2016 cannot automatically upgrade projects from version 8.6 or earlier. You must first upgrade any 8.6 or earlier versions of Kingdom projects to a minimum of version 8.7 before you can upgrade them to Kingdom 2016.
• Kingdom 2016 is only backwards compatible with Kingdom 2015 Hot Fix 4. Once you upgrade to Kingdom 2016, any existing projects you try to open with Kingdom 2016 must be upgraded and once upgraded projects are no longer usable by any previous version of Kingdom except Kingdom 2015 Hot Fix 4.
• After you upgrade a project to Kingdom 2016, you need to re-import any raster log image and calibration files. If you calibrated any raster files in Kingdom, you must first export them using Kingdom 2015 Hot Fix 4, and then import them into Kingdom 2016.
• If you previously imported production data into your project using Direct Connect, you need to delete and re-import your production data to prevent data duplication errors.
For a complete discussion of how to upgrade your projects to Kingdom 2015, refer to the Kingdom Installation Guide on the Kingdom release website (login required)
The Kingdom Demo Projects The Kingdom demo projects require Auto SQL Server Express to open. SQL Server Express is available from the Kingdom release website (login required)
10
License Server Version 8.5.5 If you are upgrading an existing license server, the latest version, 8.5.5, requires a 64-bit operating system.
• If your current license server is installed on a 32-bit computer, you will need to install the new license server on a 64-bit computer. After installation you can download new feature keys.
• If your current license server is already installed on a 64-bit computer, you will need to uninstall the current license server before installing the new one.
Note: If upgrading on an existing computer, save a copy of the feature key file - lservrc - from the existing installation directory. After installing version 8.5.5, copy this file into the new installation directory. You can also download new feature keys from My Account on the IHS Kingdom website.

Known Issues Area Description
Kingdom 2015 If you are using both 2015 and versions of Kingdom 2016 or later, you must apply Hot Fix 4 to Kingdom 2015 for the versions to work together.
Kingdom patches When applying a patch, Error 1321 may appear. Possible causes include:
• Your antivirus application could have a lock on the .exe file
• Processes are not stopping before the patch tries to update them. . The process name is included in the error message.
• Permissions for the installation folder (or parent) are restricted
• The installation folder is encrypted.
In most cases clicking Retry will allow the patch to continue and complete successfully.
Kingdom Data Management (KDM)
When using KDM to manage your projects, KDM and Kingdom must be the same version.
Kingdom and Oracle
There are known issues when using an Oracle 10g client with an 11g server.
SeismicDirect SeismicDirect crashes if a SEG Y file in the Prepare component has zero bytes. This issue will be addressed in a future release.
System Management
If your computer uses Trend Micro anti-virus software, a reboot is required before the system will accept any exceptions to Kingdom file types or the Kingdom folder.
Well Explorer Well Explorer does not currently support importing raster logs where the LIC calibration file is local but the image is on the IHS Information Hub Direct Connect server.
Kingdom cannot import rasters that have overlapping sections in the calibration file.
When importing rasters, if you select the Copy images to path option, and the path includes a shared drive with a share name different from the actual drive name, then you will get an error message, Cannot write to selected directory. A simple workaround is to put $ before the drive letter.
