Introduction

The Iditarod is a really big trail that mushers compete in. The Iditarod is not a race that people run in, it’s a trail sled dog race. The Iditarod starts in anchorage and ends in Nome. The first Iditarod was March 3, 1973.

Mushers

Mushers are the people that train the dogs and they race against other mushers. My musher is Ray Redington Jr. He is competing in the Iditarod. He has been mushing since he can remember. Ray is 38 years old and born in Alaska. His home town is Wasilla, Alaska.

DogsIn the Iditarod there’s some stuff you need to know about dogs. You can only have up to 16 dogs because that’s the limit. Dogs need to practice every year. If dogs get hypothermia and if the mushers don’t have medicine, the dogs could get sick and die. The dogs are called huskies they are dogs that can run through snow very well.

Routes

There are 2 routes. The northern route and the southern route. On the routes there are checkpoints they are used for resting your dogs. There are 26 checkpoints on the northern route and 27 on the southern.

Awards

The award is 50,000 dollars for first place. The Red Lantern is given to last place and that is the last place prize ever year.
