Who bears responsibility for schools?

1992 ICT for girls and their parents 1995 the first Internet coffee shop in Sweden at

Berzeliusskolan 1996-1998 The ”BIT-project”

(Building bridges with IT) 1999-2002 The national action plan for

ICT in school (ITiS) with a lot of local facilities 2003 - ICT is a tool for learning on a regular

A project budget of totally 3 000 000 Euro

Hundreds of subprojects divided into three main tracks

ICT in schools (ITiS) 1999-2002

Supported by the government 1100 teachers in 160 teams participated

Most parts of the BIT-project continued in order to support ITiS with extra facilities (With funding from the municipality) Information literacy - 1500 teachers Web based support for historical research A newspaper project for students and teacher

Produced in cooperation with schools, the County Museum and the University of Linköping

A Public Private Partnership (PPP) including schools, the local newspaper and the software company Textalk

The main purpose is to stimulate the use of a more investigative method of working at our schools

All schools are linked together in a common network with connection to the Internet

Common servers for storage of software and data

All pupils and teachers have their own e-mail account accessible from any Internet browser

Internet connection Almost every computer is connected to

the Internet No restricted access (no filters) All schools have their own websites Teachers can publish own and student

material on the Web directly from their own computers

The network is divided in two parts

Individual folders for server storage of documents

Each room in all schools is equipped with one data outlet connected to adm or edu network

If more than one computer is to be connected in the same room, the school has to set up a small network

Automation and support

All computer- and email-accounts for pupils are automatically generated from a common data system where all pupils are registered

All schools have their own ICT-coordinator who can manage forgotten passwords etc

Success factors

Do not forget the principal Choose robust technology Listen to the teachers Take your time

it often takes more than 5 years to introduce new pedagogical tools
