I have been attracted to Icons since childhood. They had an invitingly mysterious quality to them which I found fascinating.

The word Icon (I’kon) comes from the Greek eikon meaning image. Icons are basically scripture in picture form – videos of scriptural events and personages.

When beginning an Icon, research is done in ancient texts to find the information regarding the correct resemblance and garb of the subject. When this information is found a proper drawing is prepared.

Wood panels are readied by mounting cloth on them. They are then repeatedly primed and polished – all by hand. The prepared drawing is transferred to the panel and 22k gold is carefully applied and sealed. The painstaking process of “writing” the image proceeds until completion, at which point the piece is coated with a protective layer of varnish.

Andrij Maday is a Graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. He has exhibited extensively and has been a recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant among other awards. His woodcuts, drawings as well as painting commissions may be found in numerous private and permanent collections in North America, Europe and Australia.
