Hydraulic studies and model tests
The main criterionfor bifurcators isoptimum flow be-haviour. To achievethis, model testsare performed inour own researchlabs, but also oftenin cooperation withuniversity institutes,to determine theoptimum hydraulicshape, i.e. the oneshowing the leasthead losses.
On the basis of numerous model studiesfor high-head gates and draft tube gates,new insights into their hydrodynamic be-haviour could be gained, enabling our de-signers to enhance the operational safetyof these structures accordingly.

Beyond mere theory
For VA TECH HYDRO the verification ofcomputational methods plays an impor-tant role. Thus, for example, the calcula-ted stresses in complex geometrical
structures such as bifurcators are routi-nely checked by strain gauge measure-ments, on the prototype or on a model.The measured data are then used to im-prove our stress analysis programs.In another series of theoretical studiesand model tests to verify the theory of
critical buckling pres-sure of ring-stiffenedpipes, we were ableto achieve a majorcontribution to thisaspect of science,which resulted into animprovement of com-ponents in terms ofeconomy and safety.
Optimized manufacturing technologies
In penstock construc-tion, the right weldingtechnique is of parti-cular importance.The welding of steelshaving a yield point ofup to 800 MPa posesno problem forVA TECH HYDRO,even under the mostdifficult conditions;the relevant technologywas developed in thecompany’s ownwelding laboratories.VA TECH HYDRO isalso able to offer anautomated weldingprocess for in-situcircumferential weldson penstocks; this process ( TIG HotWire ) has been specially adapted forthis application by our engineers and itcan be used for all material gradesincluding Q&T steels.

The ability of VA TECH HYDRO to takeon even the most demanding orders isproved, among others, by our high-headgates; our references in this respectinclude equipment designed for operatingheads of more than 190 mWC. Numerous orders from the past few yearsdocument the international reputation ofVA TECH HYDRO as a manufacturer ofhigh-head gates. Our gates are equipped either withhydraulic (servomotors) or mechanicalhoisting devices. Automated circuits andremote-control systems offer safe opera-tion while at the same time limiting opera-ting and personnel costs to a minimum.

Sophisticated equipment to back upoperational safety and easy mainte-nance of run-of-the-river plants
The scope of supply of VA TECH HYDROincludes also components for run-of-the-river plants, such as radial gates with/wi-thout flap and double hook gates, intaketrashracks, trashrack raking machines,stoplogs and draft tube gates.
Moreover, the programme caters to allrequirements of river locks. Trash racks are designed to embody theoptimum hydraulic solution, while minimi-zing the risk of clogging by floating debris.
Low-maintenance rack raking machines byVA TECH HYDRO are on standby to avoidany hitch in the running of the plants.
In line with customer wishes, the cranesnecessary to move our hydraulic steelstructures are also designed and providedby VA TECH HYDRO.

Maximum utilization of local resources
- under our full responsibilty
The demand of know-how transfer as wellas making maximum use of local resour-ces, but also the cost factor, require theincreasing outplacement of activities totheproject countries.VA TECH HYDRO started to fabricate
penstocks directly on site already some30 years ago. A temporary field workshopis set up to house all the necessary ma-chinery for production and testing, so thatdeliveries to site are limited to unmachinedand flat plates only.
Out of 310,000 tons of penstocks fabrica-ted and erected by VA TECH HYDROresp. by its predecessor company VA TECH VOEST MCE, some 151,000 tonswere fabricated directly on site. So far, sitefabrication for 37 contracts have beensuccessfully completed by this technology,in 16 countries under most diverse andadverse conditions of climate and terrain.

The largest project in terms of volume wasthe Mingtan pumped storage power sta-tion in Taiwan, involving 26,000 tonnes ofsteel conduits and penstocks.For the 3rd extension of the Tarbela Damin Pakistan not only the penstocks werefabricated at site, but also, and this wasan absolute novelty, the bifurcations - thelargest unit having an inlet diameter of noless than 13.26 m and a total weight of800 tonnes.
But no matter how large the share of localsupplies and services is, the overall res-ponsibility for the project lies with VA TECH HYDRO.

First-class equipment takes roughground in its stride
Hydro power plants are often located inareas where access is difficult; handlingheavy components provides an additionalchallenge for erection crews.Well-considered solutions and specialequipment help us to master the evenmost difficult situations.
Specially developed pipe carriages takelarge pipes from the field shop to theplace of erection. It copes with units up to 80 tons and evenallows access into narrow tunnels.The heaviest erection units inVA TECH HYDRO history weighed285 tons, also moved by purpose-builtequipment from our own source.

Smaller components, pipes up to 10 tons,are erected with mobile cableway systems,especially in steep mountains or sites inremote areas.Climbing cranes and temporary erectionbridges are also among the not-so-quite-usual methods, all of them perfectlymastered by VA TECH HYDRO.
