PROBLEM Pollution is caused by many substances

released by human activities. Littering also causes pollution and hurts

many sea animals

GREENHOUSE GASSES

GREENHOUSE GASSES Many chemical compounds found in the

Earth’s atmosphere act as greenhouse gases. These gases allow sunlight to enter the atmosphere freely. When sunlight strikes the Earth’s surface, some of it is reflected back towards space as infrared radiation (heat).

GREENHOUSE GASSES Many gases exhibit these greenhouse

properties. Some of them occur in nature (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide), while others are exclusively human-made (like gases used for aerosols).

GREENHOUSE GASSES Greenhouse gases absorb this infrared

radiation and trap the heat in the atmosphere. Over time, the amount of energy sent from the sun to the Earth’s surface should be about the same as the amount of energy radiated back into space, leaving the temperature of the Earth’s surface roughly constant.

GLOBAL WARMING

GLOBAL WARMING The Earth's climate has changed many

times during the planet's history, with events ranging from ice ages to long periods of warmth.

Human activities associated with the Industrial Revolution have also changed the composition of the atmosphere and therefore very likely are influencing the Earth's climate.

GLOBAL WARMING Global warming is when the earth heats

up or the temperature rises. It happens when greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s atmosphere.

FACTORIES

Factory related pollution is the number one source of pollution in the United States.

Factory pollution carries out more than half of all water, as well as for the most deadly of pollutants.

factories consume vast quantities of fresh water to carry away wastes.

Factory pollution includes carbon monoxide, which is mainly produced in combustion processes.

CAR POLLUTION Driving a car is the most air polluting act an

average citizen commits.

combine to produce local adverse effects on the health of car users and everyone around.

LITTERING When people are not careful to properly dispose

of trash and household toxic substances, wild animals suffer.

and or die each year due to human carelessness with litter and pollution.

LITTERING Animals can swallow or get tangled in

many of the litter items people leave in the environment.

They can also ingest toxic substances like motor oil and pesticides, which are often dumped into storm drains and end up in our oceans.

HEALTH EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

Health effects would be a decrease in ling function and an increased risk of heart attacks.

SOLUTIONS People may try to restrict pollution

growth, by: Using less energy Improve energy efficiency Reduce waste

MORE SOLUTIONS And move to non-polluting renewable

forms of energy production.  Also, automobile-produced pollution can

be decreased with highly beneficial results.

REDUCING ENERGY USE

REDUCING ENERGY USE Conserving energy is usually the

smartest, most economical and most potent environmental action you can take.

REDUCING ENERGY USE Whenever you save energy, not only do

you save money, you also reduce the demand for such fossil fuels as coal, oil, and natural gas.

Less burning of fossil fuels also means lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the primary contributor to global warming, and other pollutants.

REDUCING WASTE

REDUCING WASTE Recycling and composting prevented 82

million tons of material from being disposed of improperly. This prevented the release of approximately 178 million metric tons of carbon dioxide to taking 33 million cars off the road for a year.

THOUGHTS We believe that

pollution was the start of global warming and if we don’t start now to make a difference the world will get along better with out humans.
