• Manage your weight. Excess body fat,particularly if stored around the abdomen,can increase the body’s resistance to thehormoneinsulin.

• Exercise regularly. Moderate physicalactivity on most days of the week helpsmanageweight.

• Eat a balanced, healthy diet. Reducetheamountoffat inyourdiet,especiallysaturated and trans fats. Eatmore fruit,vegetables and high-fiber foods. Cutbackonsalt.

• Limit takeaway and processedfoods. ‘Convenience meals’are usually high in salt, fat andkilojoules

• Quitsmoking.Smokersaretwiceas likely to develop diabetes asnon-smokers

• Control your blood pressure.Most people can do this withregular exercise, a balanceddiet and by keeping a healthyweight

• Reduceyourriskofcardiovasculardisease.Diabetesandcardiovasculardisease have many risk factors incommon, including obesity and physicalinactivity.

• See your doctor for regular check-ups. Asyou get older, it’s a good idea to regularlycheck your blood glucose, blood pressureandbloodcholesterollevels.

Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955,inSanFrancisco,California.Asan infant,JobswasadoptedbyClaraandPaulJobsandnamedStevenPaulJobs.Asaboy,Jobsandhisfatherworked on electronics in the family garage.Paul showed his son how to take apart andreconstruct electronics, a hobby that instilledconfidence,tenacityandmechanicalprowessinyoungJobs.WhileJobswasalwaysanintelligentandinnovativethinker,hisyouthwasriddledwithfrustrationsoverformalschooling.In1974,JobstookapositionasavideogamedesignerwithAtari.Severalmonthslaterheleftthe company to find spiritual enlightenment inIndia, traveling further and experimenting withpsychedelicdrugs.In 1976,when Jobswas just 21, he andSteveWozniak started Apple Computer in the Jobs’familygarage.TheyfundedtheirentrepreneurialventurebyJobssellinghisVolkswagenbusandWozniaksellinghisbelovedscientificcalculator.In1980,AppleComputerbecameapubliclytradedcompany,withamarket valueof$1.2billionbytheendofitsveryfirstdayoftrading.Jobslookedtomarketing expert JohnSculley of Pepsi-ColatotakeovertheroleofCEOforApple. In1984,Apple released the Macintosh, marketing thecomputerasapieceofacounterculturelifestyle:

But despite positivesalesandperformancesuperiortoIBM'sPCs,theMacintoshwasstillnotIBM-compatible.In1986,JobspurchasedananimationcompanyfromGeorge Lucas, which later became PixarAnimationStudios.BelievinginPixar'spotential,Jobs initially invested $50 million of his ownmoney in the company. The studiowent on toproducewildlypopularmoviessuchasToyStory,FindingNemoandThe Incredibles;Pixar's filmshave collectively netted $4 billion. The studiomergedwithWaltDisneyin2006,makingSteveJobsDisney'slargestshareholder.In 2003, Jobs discovered that he had aneuroendocrinetumor,ararebutoperableformofpancreaticcancer.Forninemonths,Jobspostponedsurgery,makingApple'sboardofdirectorsnervous.Executives feared that shareholders would pulltheir stock ifwordgotout that theirCEOwas ill.2004,hehadasuccessfulsurgerytoremovethepancreatictumor.Truetoform,insubsequentyearsJobsdisclosedlittleabouthishealth.Earlyin2009,reportscirculatedaboutJobs'weightloss,somepredictinghishealthissueshadreturned,whichincludedalivertransplant.Jobsrespondedtothese concerns by stating hewas dealingwith ahormone imbalance.Days later,hewentonasix-month leaveofabsence. Inane-mailmessagetoemployees, Jobs said his "health-related issuesaremore complex" than he thought, then namedTim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, as“responsibleforApple'sday-to-dayoperations."After nearly a year out of the spotlight, SteveJobsdeliveredakeynoteaddressataninvite-onlyAppleeventonSeptember9,2009.Hecontinuedtoserveasmasterofceremonies,whichincludedthe unveiling of the iPad, throughout much of2010.HoweverinJanuary2011,Jobsannouncedhe was going on medical leave. In August, heresignedasCEOofApple,handingthereignstoCook,andinOctoberhepassedaway.
