1. Colonialism• The process by which one nation takes over

another nation, usually for the purpose of exploiting its labor and natural resources

• Great Britain (1750) began to spread industrialization around western Europe

• Conquered weaker nations

Africa

• Africa was divided up by many European countries

• Europeans created boundaries without regards to tribes or culture

• Today still problems with racial-ethnic and tribal violence

2. World System Theory

• Economic & political connections that tie the world’s countries together

1. Countries industrialized first are known as core nations

2. Nations around them would next develop based on trade with those nations (semiperiphery)

3. Countries that sold crops to industrialized nations but did not develop were known as periphery

4. External Area are nations left out all together

Globalization of Capitalism

• Adoption of capitalism around the world

• Asia was left out of capitalism• Production & trade are now

interconnected that events around the world affect us

• All societies are part of a world system no matter where they are located
