Network Use Guidelines• School districts are

required to establish policies regarding access to their network, the Internet, and the World Wide Web

• San Diego City Schools policies are specified in a document called “Network Use Guidelines”

Student Network Responsibility Contract

• Students and their parents are required to sign this contract acknowledging that they agree to these policies

SanDiNet

• The district’s wide area network that connects schools and support offices

• It provides data communications, including email and access to the Internet and World Wide Web

San Diego City Schools Networking System

Responsiblities

• Tell instructor of material that is inappropriate

• Do not disrupt the network– Excessive files– Viruses/Vandalism

• Use the computers for Education and Research as the primary objective

• Protect students from “harmful matter” – bad/inappropriate websites

• Teachers are responsible for selecting what is appropriate

• Explain the risks of the Internet

Internet/World Wide Web• Internet:

–A global network of interconnected networks

• World Wide Web:–A hypertext-based

information system that provides access to global information

• Accessed through SanDiNet

Appropriate Use of SanDiNet

Some of the things that you can do on SanDiNet include:

1. Printing to networked printers in your classroom

2. Saving files to your own folders3. Retrieving files from your own folders4. Accessing your files that are

saved to the network from anywhere in the school

Appropriate Use of Internet

Some of the things that you can do on theInternet include:

1. View artwork2. Read newspapers from all over the world3. Access library catalogs and databases4. Research information for

classroom assignments5. Take virtual tours and field trips

to colleges and museums

Acceptable Use Policy

Use of SanDiNetis a privilege,

not a right!

Warning!

• The district has the right to monitor network, Internet, email, and any other networked application usage

• No student should have any expectation of privacy

Prohibited Use• Transmission of any material that:

– Violates the rights of another– Is defamatory, inappropriate, abusive,

obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, or illegal

– Contains ads, solicitations, commercial ventures, or political lobbying

– Encourages use of controlled substances

– Violates copyright laws

Prohibited Use

Downloading or using copyrighted information without permission from the copyright holder is against the law:

• Write or email for permission

• Credit the copyright holder in “Works Cited”

Go to Jail!• The following actions are

against the law:– Any vandalism, unauthorized

access, “hacking,” or tampering with hardwareor software

– Introduction of “viruses,” “worms,” or pirated software

– Theft of equipment

Go directly to jail!

• Tampering with software includes downloading or installing:

– Any executable programs– Desktop wallpaper– Email attachments– Any unauthorized media

including music, graphics, or videos

Inappropriate UseWhat else is unacceptable on

SanDiNet?1. Instant messaging2. Emailing without explicit permission3. Printing to another room without

permission4. Accessing another person’s

files and information5. Using another person’s account6. Wasting school resources

through improper use

Penalties for Violation

• Parent conference

• Suspension/cancellation of network privileges

• Closing of your account

• Restitution/replacement

• Suspension from school

• Expulsion

• Criminal prosecution!

Caution!

• Never post personal information about yourself or others

• Be careful what personal info you share with strangers

Report Violations!

Any violations of the use of the district's network should be reported to the teacher.

Be Smart!

• Take individual responsibility

• Follow Network Use Guidelines and Acceptable Use Policy

• Respect copyright• Consider all use

Netiquette

• Be polite.

• Use appropriate language.

• Maintain privacy of yourself and others.

• Respect copyrights.

• Do not disrupt the network.

Acceptable Use Policy Test

• You must get a score of 80% or higher to pass

• You must pass to retain your computer privileges
