IMPORTANT
My name is Francis Jonah. I believe all things are
possible. It is because of this belief that I have
achieved so much in life. This belief extends to all. I
believe every human being is equipped to succeed
in every circumstance, regardless of the
circumstance.
I know the only gap that exists between you and
what you need to achieve or overcome is
knowledge.
People are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
It is for this reason that I write short practical books
that are so simple, people begin to experience
immediate results as evidenced by the many
.12
testimonies I receive on daily basis for my various
books.
This book is no exception. You will obtain results
because of it.

INTRODUCTION
There are many testimonies about the great
victories that praise has brought into the lives of
believers. I am also a living testimony to the power
of praise.
Praise is a powerful tool God gave us and the more
knowledge and understanding we have of it, the
better our lives will be.
Praise has seen me through some really tough
times and brought me victory every time. Others
have had major breakthroughs by using praise
rightfully.
It is a liberating thought to know that God has
made wonderful things available for us to use to
.15
serve Him and also gain victory in our daily live
situations.
It is the reason it is important to gain knowledge on
such important things as praise. We cannot be
ignorant about praise.
The new understanding that you will take away
after reading this book will give you the keys to
your victory today and forevermore.
Have an impactful read.
You are blessed.
.16
CHAPTER ONE
PRAISE: WHAT IS IT?
Every Christian can boldly say that they have
praised God in their lives, one way or the other
before. In fact, church services always have times
for praises as part of the spiritual activities we
undertake.
As humans, we give praise to most of the people or
things that hold value to us and make our life more
meaningful. We praise our bosses, our children, our
favourite soccer or basketball teams, our friends
and many others who have impacted us greatly.
.17
This gives us an indication that the concept of
praise has been in our make up as humans for as
long as we have lived.
There are several instances the psalmist asks us to
praise God. In one interesting circumstance that led
to a life being spared, praise was used as a
bargaining tool. See how beautifully the words were
put:
For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not
celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit
cannot hope for thy truth. Isaiah 38:18
To really understand the concept of praise, we
need to look at how it is used in the Hebrew and
Greek renditions of the bible.
.18
Few words were used to represent praise in the
Greek and Hebrew bibles.
These words include Halal, Yadah, Tehilah, Todah.
They are explained properly below:
Halal
Halal simply means to boast in God. One uses Halal
to express their utmost faith in God. It is to clamour
almost foolishly in praising God. In expressing Halal,
we talk about the might and power of God.
I will be expressing Halal to God if I tell God is He
amazing, that he is awesome and that there is none
like Him.
Halal is used in the following verses.
.19
Halal is italicized to depict how it is used in the
verses.
The psalmist declares it like this;
Sing unto God, sing praises (halal) to his name:
extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his
name JAH, and rejoice before him. Psalm 68:4
In Revelations, it comes out powerfully;
And after these things I heard a great voice of
much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia (halal);
Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto
the Lord our God. Revelations 19:1
The same is observed here too;
And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose
up for ever and ever.
.20
4 And the four and twenty elders and the four
beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on
the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
5 And a voice came out of the throne, saying,
Praise (Halal) our God, all ye his servants, and ye
that fear him, both small and great.
6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great
multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and
as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying,
Alleluia (Halal): for the Lord God omnipotent
reigneth. Revelations 3-6
Yadah
Yaddah means appreciating God for something He
has done. Yadah can be found in these scriptures
too.
.21
I will be expressing Yaddah if I sing praises to God
in appreciation for what he has done for me.
In Genesis, Yadah was sang to praise God for the
birth of Judah;
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she
said, Now will I praise (Yadah) the LORD:
therefore she called his name Judah; and left
bearing. Genesis 29 : 35
David masterfully used it when he said;
What profit is there in my blood, when I go down
to the pit? Shall the dust praise (Yadah) thee?
Shall it declare thy truth? Psalm 30:9
Tehilah
.22
Tehilah is used to extol God. It is synonymous to
Halal in its use.
I will be expressing when I praise God for His might
and power.
Tehilah is used in instances such as this;
He is thy praise (tehilah), and he is thy God, that
hath done for thee these great and terrible things,
which thine eyes have seen. Deuteronomy 10:21
The prophet Isaiah invokes Tehilah in Israel by
saying;
And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he
make Jerusalem a praise (Tehilah) in the earth.
Isaiah 62:7;
God Himself demanded for Tehilah in this case;
.23
For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so
have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house
of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the
LORD; that they might be unto me for a people,
and for a name, and for a praise (Tehilah), and for
a glory: but they would not hear Psalm 22: 22, 25.
Todah
Todah is used to express the giving of thanks to
God. When one is overwhelmed by the things God
has done for them or remembers what God did
sometime for them, they tend to offer Him Todah.
King David employs Todah here by declaring;
When I remember these things, I pour out my soul
in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went
with them to the house of God, with the voice of
.24
joy and praise (Todah), with a multitude that kept
holyday. Psalm 42:4
The Israelites were directed on how to offer their
sacrifices as Todah;
If he offer it for a thanksgiving (Todah), then he
shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving
unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and
unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes
mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried. Leviticus 7:12
From the above renditions, we can say Praise is
expressing joy, giving thanks, celebrating and giving
glory to God for his might, power and for all He has
done for us.
Praise is A Sacrifice
.25
Praise can be offered as a sacrifice unto God. We
are advised on how to offer our praise in the book
of Hebrews unto God;
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer
to God a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that
confess his name. Hebrews 13 : 5
Praise is a fruit of our lips. It is a sacrifice. When we
go to offer a sacrifice, normally, the success of our
sacrifice is dependent on the receiver of the
sacrifice. Thus, God may choose to reject or accept
our sacrifice dependent on its quality.
This shifts the focus from us to being about God.
The receiver of the gifts determines how pleasing
the gift is to Him.
Praise is Our Duty
.26
Psalm 150:6 - Let everything that has breath praise
the Lord. Praise the Lord (NIV)
The bible makes us understand that God created us
for his good pleasure and to worship and praise
him. It is the duty of man to praise God. Praising
God in all our situations is basically living as God
wants us to live – to his glory.
Praise is the will of God
A lot of people are looking for the will of God. Well,
thanksgiving which is a form of praise is the will of
God.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 - Give thanks in all
circumstances, for this is God's will for you in
Christ Jesus (NIV)
.27
The above verse admonishes us to thank God in all
things; the good, the best, the bad and the ugly
because thanksgiving is the will of God concerning
us. God requires that we praise him and
thanksgiving is a great way to praise Him.
Praise is a lifestyle
Praises to God is a lifestyle. It is not a one-off thing
that happens every Sunday when we assemble as
believers to sing and dance unto God. Praise goes
beyond that. The Psalmist puts it in a very profound
way by saying “I will extol the Lord at all times; his
praise will always be on my lips” – Psalm 34:1
(NIV)
ABSOLUTE PRAISE
.28
We appreciate his interventions in our life and
bless his awesome wonders through our Worship,
our Thanksgiving through prayers and by our Praise
to Him.
In our Worship, we glorify God for who He is. He
uphold his majesty and lift his name. We say things
like He is the Great I Am, Omnipotent, the Most
High and that there is none like Him. In our
Thanksgiving, we offer our gratitude for what He
has done. We basically say thank you Lord for
giving me this miracle, for keeping me alive, for this
job, for healing me of my disease etc.
In our Praise, we similarly thank God for what he
has done for us but then we bless His name for
things we have not received yet also.
.29
Thus, while Thanksgiving expresses our gratitude to
God, Praise expresses our faith in God.
As indicated, we can offer praises and thanks to
anyone or creature of God however, worship is
reserved for God only. According to Luke 4:8, only
God is worthy of our worship.
Luke 4:8 - Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship
the Lord your God and serve him only” (NIV)
Praise is intertwined with Thanksgiving whilst
Worship is interrelated with Surrender. In our
praise, we give thanks to God for what He has and
has not done while in our Worship, we come to a
point of surrender where we lose ourselves in
adoration of who God is.
.30
Thanksgiving can be a part of Praise, Praise can be
a part of Worship.
.31
CHAPTER TWO
WHY PRAISE?
A wise man once said “when the purpose of a thing
is not known, abuse is inevitable”. Praise goes
beyond the fast-paced songs we sing in church. It
goes beyond the dancing, clapping and shouting.
Praise is our duty
As discussed earlier in the previous chapter, it is
the duty of man to praise God. However, this is not
the sole privilege of man because all creation is
supposed to reveal the might of God and to give
him praise. The bible talks about the angels and the
24 elders giving God praise and worship.
.32
However, God loves the praise of man above all
else. This is because though he can cause all of His
creation (even stones) to give him praise, He
expects man to praise him.
One day as Jesus was being praised, the Pharisees
asked him to rebuke his disciples, listen to the
conversation that ensued between them:
Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the
name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in
the highest.
And some of the Pharisees from among the
multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy
disciples.
.33
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you
that, if these should hold their peace, the stones
would immediately cry out. Luke 19:38-40
Praise shows our gratitude to God and faith in God
When we praise God, we show our gratitude to
Him. Why won’t we? He has been so good to us for
the gift of life and the realities of the new creation
man who is born again and made a citizen of
heaven. We also show our faith and trust in Him.
Psalm 147 : 12 - Extol the LORD, O Jerusalem;
praise your God, O Zion, 13 for he strengthens the
bars of your gates and blesses your people within
you. 14 He grants peace to your borders and
satisfies you with the finest of wheat (NIV)
.34
Through praise, we are able to show our gratitude
to God. Through praise, we show God that that we
have faith in Him – that we trust him.
The bible admonishes us to give thanks to God in all
circumstances. This is because thanksgiving is God’s
will for our lives.
A lot of people think it means that the
circumstance is the will of God. But no, the
circumstance is not the will of God, it is
thanksgiving that is the will of God. Do not accept
every negative circumstance as the will of God
using this scripture.
The first step to destroy the works of the devil is to
recognize it for what it is. As long as you keep
thinking it is God who is causing your negative
.35
fortunes, you will never enforce victory over the
devil and the negative circumstances He brings
circumstances.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 - Give thanks in all
circumstances, for this is God's will for you in
Christ Jesus (NIV)
What this does is tell God that we still love and
trust him regardless of our circumstances and that
everything is working together for our good.
And that evil circumstance will change to the glory
of God.
Praise brings down the presence of God
When the heart goes out in genuine praise the
power and presence of God is felt mightily.
.36
Psalm 22:3 - But You are holy, Enthroned in the
praises of Israel (NKJV)
The verse explains that God will dwell where He is
praised – He is enthroned in the praises of his
people. The man who praise God continually
carries the tangible presence of God with him
wherever he goes. This makes him a success and
makes him overcome every obstacle he faces
because God is with him.
Dearly beloved, if you want to carry the presence
of God in your life tangibly, then you have to be a
man or woman of praise.
David realised this at an early stage. Even as a
rejected son of Jesse, he praised God with his harp
in the wilderness always and because of that God
.37
was with him always. He knew praise will always
help him carry the tangible presence of God.
Let’s see what he told Goliath when he went down
to fight him in 1 Sam 17:45
David said to the Philistine, "You come against me
with sword and spear and javelin, but I come
against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the
God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied
(NIV).
The rest is history, Goliath suffered a bad defeat in
the hands of the “praiser”. The man after God’s
own heart.
.38
CHAPTER THREE
THE POWER OF PRAISE
The man who praises God is one of the most
powerful men on earth. This is simply because he
carries the presence of God with him. If nothing is
too hard for God, then believe that nothing will be
too hard for that man also.
Praise breaks our shackles and sets us free
What will you answer when you are confronted
with a question of how to break out of every
prison? Whether the prison of debt, sickness or a
physical prison. Paul and Silas had a simple
formula. Pray and Praise.
.39
Acts 16:25-26 - About midnight Paul and Silas
were praying and singing hymns to God, and the
other prisoners were listening to them. 26
Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that
the foundations of the prison were shaken. At
once all the prison doors flew open, and
everybody's chains came loose (NIV)
I decree that every shackle of depression, suicidal
thoughts and confusion is being loose right now as
you praise God now. No shackle will hold you if you
develop an attitude of praise. Praise will break
every bond of the enemy against you. In Jesus
name.
The right way to approach the presence of your
Father.
.40
You may have problems and pains and burdens you
will want to present but always start with praise in
approaching the father.
Ps 100:4 - Enter his gates with thanksgiving and
his courts with praise; give thanks to him and
praise his name (NIV)
This approach helps you leave with mighty
solutions to any issues that befall you. Winners are
always praising. There is a key in it.
Praise wins our wars and makes the enemy flee
Renowned Gospel Musician Marvin Sapp in his
song Praise Him In Advance, had a profound line in
his lyrics that said Praise will confuse the enemy.
That line struck me hard. It made so much sense
and I have tested it to be true. Praise indeed
.41
confuses the enemy. The enemy doesn’t
understand why you will praise God when he is
throwing obstacles and negative circumstances
your way. He doesn’t understand why you should
be joyful and happy despite all the things you are
going through. Keep confusing him more, he will
find another persona and leave you alone.
Ps 8:2 puts this in better perspective.
From the lips of children and infants you have
ordained praise because of your enemies, to
silence the foe and the avenger (NIV).
Praise is not only meant to glorify God but as a
weapon against our enemies. Praise is to silence
and defeat our enemies.
.42
The Jericho Experience
Perhaps one of the most common of stories where
enemies of the children of God was defeated with
Praise is the story of the tumbling down of the
walls of Jericho.
Joshua 6:2 - Then the Lord said to Joshua, "See, I
have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with
its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the
city once with all the armed men. Do this for six
days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams'
horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day,
march around the city seven times, with the
priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear
them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have all
the people give a loud shout; then the wall of the
.43
city will collapse and the people will go up, every
man straight in (NIV)
In the above verse, we get to understand that
armies and weapons were not what God
recommended as arsenals to be used to take the
city of Jericho. The Ark of the Covenant (signifying
the presence of God) and praise was. A shout of
praise was the killer blow that broke the mighty
walls of Jericho.
Today if you will shout to the glory of God despite
that problem that has been torturing you for all this
while, believing that the Lord has given you victory
over that problem, that problem is going to flee.
You will get renewed strength and confidence to
tell it to move and it will move. Glory to God.
.44
The Davidic Experience
David had one of the most vivid praise experiences.
He danced so hard unto the Lord that his critics
were out in full force and God had to intervene
Himself. When you praise God, He takes matters
into His own hands.
2 Samuel 6:12-23 – “Now King David was told,
"The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-
Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of
God." So David went down and brought up the ark
of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of
David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were
carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he
sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 David,
wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord
with all his might, 15 while he and the entire
.45
house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with
shouts and the sound of trumpets. 16 As the ark of
the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal
daughter of Saul watched from a window. And
when she saw King David leaping and dancing
before the Lord, she despised him in her heart. 17
They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its
place inside the tent that David had pitched for it,
and David sacrificed burnt offerings and
fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he
had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and
fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the
name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf
of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to
each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both
men and women. And all the people went to their
homes. 20 When David returned home to bless his
.46
household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to
meet him and said, "How the king of Israel has
distinguished himself today, disrobing in the sight
of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar
fellow would!" 21 David said to Michal, "It was
before the Lord, who chose me rather than your
father or anyone from his house when he
appointed me ruler over the Lord's people Israel —
I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become
even more undignified than this, and I will be
humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave
girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor." 23 And
Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day
of her death. (NIV)
The verses above tells us of a story that happened
after the Israelites had retrieved the Ark of the
.47
Covenant. David the King was so excited he danced
heavily to praise the lord. Now his wife Michal who
was given unto him by Saul did not understand
David’s sacrifice of praise and despised him for it.
She again rebuked him for that when he got home.
The bible says that her womb was shut and she
became barren because she spoke against David
and his sacrifice of praise. Are you ready to dance
now unto the Lord? The evil comments about you,
the enchantments and negative plans will all fall by
the way if you do.
A man of praise has a spiritual firewall around him.
Nothing inimical gets through it. No weapon
fashioned against such a man shall prosper because
God himself is with him and is fighting for Him in
praise.
.48
.49
CHAPTER FOUR:
HOW TO PRAISE GOD
Praise of God has a lot of benefits for us as
believers. But praising the lord like any other
spiritual exercise will not yield the blessings it is
supposed to give when it is not done well.
So how do we go about praising the lord one may
ask?
Praise the Lord with our hearts
Matthew 15:8 - These people honor me with their
lips, but their hearts are far from me. (NIV)
.50
The verse above explains to us that we can be
hypocrites when offering praises unto God. Our
praise must come from the deepest parts of our
hearts and must be very sincere. Many Christians
get caught up in the trap of trivializing the praises
and the power that can be obtained from it
because they see praise as a Sunday routine and
thus do it without understanding.
Today I want to urge you to be intentional about
your praise. Purpose to praise God from your heart
and extol him with meaning.
Praise the Lord in faith
Without faith, it is impossible to please God. That is
why faith is important in praise.
.51
But without faith it is impossible to please him:
for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently
seek him. Hebrews 11:6
The Lord requires us to praise him in faith. He
requires that we give him praise for things we have
received and the things we are yet to receive.
Praising God for the things we have asked from him
but have not yet received tangibly expresses our
faith in him.
Praise God in understanding
Prov 24:3 - By wisdom a house is built, and through
understanding it is established (NIV)
Wisdom tell us to praise the lord but we need
understanding to continue in praise even when we
.52
don’t feel like it, on the days when things are not
going as we expected them to go. Understanding
will let us know that one of the easiest way to clean
the mess we have found ourselves in is to praise
the Lord.
Praising the Lord in those times brings the presence
of the lord which is also the spirit of the Lord. The
spirit of the lord builds and makes everything right.
In the book of Genesis, it was the Spirit of the Lord
that brooded on the waters and caused creation to
be effected.
Our lives are transform when the spirit of the lord
comes into it. Praise can make that happen.
.53
CHAPTER FIVE
ENTER YOUR BATTLES WITH PRAISE
Praise is one of the most powerful weapons in the
arsenal of a believer. Any believer who employs
praise in his battles is bound to win.
A clear example is the story of Jehoshaphat in 2
Chronicles 20:15-25
He (God) said: "Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all
who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the
Lord says to you: 'Do not be afraid or discouraged
because of this vast army. For the battle is not
yours, but God's. 16 Tomorrow march down
against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass
.54
of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the
gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. 17 You will not have
to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand
firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give
you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do
not be discouraged. Go out to face them
tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.'" 18
Jehoshaphat bowed with his face to the ground,
and all the people of Judah and Jerusalem fell
down in worship before the Lord. 19 Then some
Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood
up and praised the Lord, the God of Israel, with
very loud voice. 20 Early in the morning they left
for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out,
Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Listen to me, Judah
and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord
your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his
.55
prophets and you will be successful." 21 After
consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed
men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the
splendor of his holiness as they went out at the
head of the army, saying: "Give thanks to the
Lord, for his love endures forever." 22 As they
began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes
against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount
Seir who were invading Judah, and they were
defeated. 23 The men of Ammon and Moab rose
up against the men from Mount Seir to destroy
and annihilate them. After they finished
slaughtering the men from Seir, they helped to
destroy one another. 24 When the men of Judah
came to the place that overlooks the desert and
looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead
bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
.56
25 So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off
their plunder, and they found among them a great
amount of equipment and clothing and also
articles of value — more than they could take
away. There was so much plunder that it took
three days to collect it (NIV)
King Jehoshaphat is told that a vast army was
coming up against him and they were just unto
him. The king proclaims a fast in all of Judah and
goes to see the face of the lord. The lord tells the
King to not be afraid and know that the battle is
not his.
In the verse 21, we see that the King goes to battle
with the men of Judah singing praises to God. Now
Judah means Praise. They did not go into the battle
.57
with war cries and chats of war but praise. That’s
unheard off in battle strategy.
Tell that to any army general or military strategist
and they will say you are out of your mind. But that
is the way of God and the potency of praise.
That was God telling them that praise will win this
battle. This battle is not yours. You don’t have to
fight it with your strength, only with your sacrifice
of PRAISE.
And true to Gods word, they were victorious and
won the battle without exerting physical efforts.

CONCLUSION
Beloved, praise wins battles. Face any battle with
praising God and see victory in your life. Whatever
you are facing, go into war with that and see the
hand of God made strong through your offerings of
praise.
Praise will confuse the enemy, praise will increase
your faith and improve your walk with God.
Get your praise on. It is time for praise.
You are blessed.
