SUNDAY OF THE HOLY FATHERS 1 Червня June 1, 2014
Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Parish Українська Католицька Церква Пресвятої Родини
The foolish Arius divided the unity of the
Holy Trinity into three different and
unequal substances. But the God-
bearing Fathers came together in
Council. Burning with the zeal of Elijah
the Tishbite and with the sword of the
Holy Spirit, they cut down these
shameful blasphemies; for they were
directed by the Spirit.
Let us honour today those mystical
trumpets of the Spirit, namely, the God-
mantled Fathers, who speaking of
divine things, sang in the midst of the
Church a hymn in unison, teaching that
the Trinity is one, not differing in
substance or Godhead, refuting Arius
and defending the orthodox faith. They
always intercede with the Lord to have
mercy on our souls.

Appeal of His Beatitude Sviatoslav to the Faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church on the Occasion of the Missionary Days
Dearly Beloved in Christ!
Today I address all of you faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, led by your priests and bishops, and invite each one of you to embark together with me on an extraordinary pilgrimage that will last for ten days—from the Ascension to the Descent of the Holy spirit, Pentecost. We are calling this pilgrimage the Missionary Days in which we turn the attention of our entire Church towards our common vocation as “missionaries,” that is to say a community ready to share God’s Word of salvation with others.
The stages of this pilgrimage are based on a reading of the Acts of the Apostles throughout this decade of days for our overall growth, highlighting the following topics:
1. The gift of baptism and divine adoption: lest we forget, Whose children we are and that we have a “heavenly citizenship;”
2. The Word of god: to remind ourselves that god made Himself known to the human race and continues to speak to us;
3. The teachers of faith: to remember those who gave us the gift of faith and who now guide us in the faith;
4. The gift of consecrated life: to appreciate the gift of monastic and religious communities in the Church and to accompany those vocations by our prayers:
5. To be a disciple of Christ: to fell the calling that god has for each of us—FOR ME– to follow Him and live according to His teaching;
6. Responsibility for the gift of faith: to be aware that this gift demands our continual response and efforts;
7. Willingness to testify-to serve: to give witness to God’s wonderful works and to serve Him and our neighbour as the Lord Himself showed us;
8. Our Cross: that we be not afraid of life’s difficulties and challenges, and carry our crosses bravely for the sake of Christ;
9. To be filled with a missionary spirit: to experienced that to be with Christ is an indescribable joy that should be shared with everyone;
10. The gift of the Holy Spirit: that we may always be open to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Who already dwells in us and moves us towards what is good.
Our pilgrimage is not tied to a place, but rather to a spiritual state. It is important to listen and meditate on God’s word and our Holy Mother Church’s teachings that our pastors, priests and bishops hand down to us. With every passing day of our pilgrimage, may the gift of God’s love and the joy of sharing in the journey increases within us. On the tenth day, the feast of Pentecost, may we all fervently ask the Holy Spirit to restore in us the joy of our life in Christ, renewing our countenance as Christ’s disciples, reviving our parish communities, raising and resurrecting our native Ukraine.
‘The Guide to the Missionary Decade”, our pilgrimages' itinerary is available from the website: www.stamforddio.org Your pastor will lead you from the Ascension to Pentecost.
During the next couple of weeks, we will be including a serious of articles that will lead us in a mission beginning with the Feast of the Ascension which we celebrated at Holy Family this past Thursday evening. This initiative was established by our Father and Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav. In the weeks to come we will have a chance to meditate on readings from the Divine Liturgy, taken from the Acts of the Apostles. The Book of Acts is the continuation of the Gospel of St. Luke, relating what took place with the Church following the ascension of Jesus into Heaven. The example of the life of the Early Church, its birth, development and missionary activity provides us with an ideal model for our missionary activity in the world today. The themes presented by St. Luke in the Acts of the Apostles will help us better respond to the call of His Beatitude, expressed in his pastoral letter: “The Vibrant Parish – a Place to Encounter the Living Christ.”
The account presented in the Acts of the Apostles is marked by the abiding presence of Jesus Christ, our Lord. The evangelist Luke frequently emphasized that Jesus is King and Lord not of an ever-more distant past, but in the present and real to us. He is a person who can be known and loved. Who can hear and be heard, who continues to act in the world. That is why we could also call this book, “the Acts of Jesus in the Church,” for it bears witness that Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever (see Hebrews 13:7), and that He is Emmanuel, God-with-us (see Matthew 1:23), every day until the end of this age (see Matthew 28:20).
Our parish communities and families (the domestic churches) have a missionary character to them. This missionary spirit is a consequence of the gift of our Baptism, by virtue of which we, as Catholic Christians, take upon ourselves the responsibility to believe, live, serve, and share the witness of our faith in Christ, not just among our family members, but with our neighbours, wherever we may live. Thus, the mission of our parish community is to allow our Lord to enter more deeply into our lives, and to carry the Good News beyond our own community, inviting others to partake in the Kingdom of God. In the weeks to come, may Our Risen Lord renew our life in God through the power and action of His Holy Spirit.
