“Come for the schools,
Stay for the Senior Center.”
(Quote from Benjamin Palleiko)
J/J2018
8:30-4:00 Monday - Thursday
8:30-2:00 Friday
28 Mayhew Street
Hopkinton, MA 01748

The June sun So Bright and strong Shines through my Window. I think each one of us is a flower blooming along with the outside flowers. We can bloom and grow together at the Senior Center. Think about it!
Reflection by Mary McLeod
W ith warmer weather often comes the tendency to stay inside at
home where it is cool. However, don’t forget that the Senior Center is
a great place to take refuge from the heat and humidity. As you read
the newsletter I know you will see that we offer a wide variety of
activities, programs, and exercise, along with a great lunch all within a
welcoming and air conditioned environment! Remember to check out
our great trips for June and July – we work hard to give you a mix of
fun “days out.”
You really don’t know what you are missing by not stopping by and
seeing what we have to offer. We are always looking to offer more so
if you don’t see it, ask, and we will try to make it happen.
Amy Beck, Interim Director

June 4 – The Life We Bury
by Allen Eskens
“College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal
of completing a writing assignment for an English
class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a
brief biography of the person. With deadlines
looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to
find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson,
and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same.”

David P. Nelson 1941-2018
David Nelson Chairman of COA, will be remembered here at the Hopkinton Senior Center for his tireless support of the Center. He volunteered as an assistant in the Computer Lab, worked in the Thrift Shop, assisted the redeemable bottle/
cans collections and was most recently a Greeter. If that wasn't enough, for the past 2 years he served as Chairman of the Council on Aging and has held a seat on the Council since the opening of the new building. He has left a large empty space here at the center. His soft-spoken, gentle and compassionate personality will be greatly missed.
May God bless his loving wife Joanne and family in this time of sorrow.

SENIOR SAFE
10 WAYS FOR SENIOR TO STAY COOL IN HOT WEATHER
1. Drink plenty of cool water throughout the day (don’t rely on feeling thirsty!) and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
2. Eat cooling snacks like homemade popsicles (with cupcake liner as drip catcher), frozen peas, or slightly frozen grapes.
3. Eat light, cold meals like chicken or pasta salad instead of heavy, hot dishes like pot roast.
4. Place a cool washcloth on the back of the neck and a pan of cool water close by to periodically re-cool the towel.
5. Sit with feet in a pan of cool (but not too cold) water. 6. Keep the house as cool as possible by keeping shades closed during the hottest part
of the day and using inexpensive solar curtains. 7. Wear layers of lightweight clothing in light colored cotton so it’s easy to adjust to the
temperature throughout the day by removing or adding layers. 8. Visit a public cooling center like a recreation center, senior center, library, coffee
shop, or shopping mall. 9. Take a cool shower, bath, or washcloth wipe-down. For maximum cooling, keep the
water just below body temperature. 10. Cover up with a flexible ice blanket – use a thin towel to keep the ice away from direct
skin contact.

If you or your organization would like to financially sponsor and honor veterans in this way, please contact Amy Beck for information at extension 1613. The June sponsor is in memory of Tony DeStefano and July is sponsored by Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Center. The veterans and staff greatly appreciate all our generous contributors.
