CONTINUOUS ANNEALING LINESfor CARBON STEELSCONTINUOUS ANNEALING LINESfor CARBON STEELS
To meet today’s steadily growing and highly varieddemands on steel strip, a whole range of newgrades was developed. Especially the automotiveindustry processes more and more multiphase steel– high strength, yet very ductile. However, there aremany other industrial applications that require mod-ern steels with ever better properties. Even high-strength steels need to be effectively weldable, withfaultless surfaces, and easy to shape – usually bydeep-drawing. Using precisely controlled thermaltreatment, the microstructure that has solidified during cold rolling is altered to achieve the desiredmechanical properties. SMS Siemag has closely followed and driven the development of continuousannealing lines.

HYUNDAI HYSCO,HYUNDAI HYSCO, continuous annealingline with record capacity of 1.2 million t/a
QUALITY PRODUDUCTS
for automotive construction and more
This annealing line is part of the steel complex ofHyundai Hysco in Suncheon on Korea’s south coast. It was commissioned in 1998 and comes with anannual capacity of 1.2 million t – more than any other steel strip annealing line in the world. The plant gives the strip the mechanical properties andflawless surface it requires for further processing.Depending on its dimensions, the strip takes 10 to45 minutes to pass through the line. That calls forspot-on sequences throughout all process stages.
ENTRY SECTION
A walking beam conveys the coils at a set rhythm tothe uncoiling station. To enable continuous operationof the plant, the two uncoilers are loaded alternately. The strip goes through a pre-leveler that prepares the ends for welding. Here, a cross shear cuts offends that are too thick or damaged by transportbefore the strips are welded together into endlessstrip.
STRIP CLEANING
Next, a looper takes up the strip and pays it out atdefined tension into the triple-level cleaning section.First, the strip is sprayed and brushed. Then it movesthrough a vertical wet tunnel to the next section, elec-trolytic cleaning. Another wet tunnel takes it up to thethird level, consisting of five-stage cascade rinsingwith brush cleaning and strip drying.
ENTRY LOOPER
Once it has been cleaned, the strip goes into an entrylooper with two loop towers that each hold twentylengths. The entry looper stores up 900 meters ofstrip to bridge the gaps in the entry section. Accord-ing to the lengths accumulated, the two loop cars aredriven individually. Acceleration forces are effectivelycompensated by the partly driven deflector rolls. There is a set of tension rolls between the towers to correct any strip tension losses.
FURNACE
This is where the strip is annealed to a pre-set tem-perature of up to 850 °C and then cooled to 40 °C.The annealing process consists of the stages pre-heating, heating, soaking, cooling, rapid cooling, overaging, and final cooling. A mathematical modelensures high temperature accuracy.
Transport of the finishedcoils on a walking beam.

5
EXIT LOOPER
The strip travels over a roller system that compen-sates tension fluctuations and guides it into the exitlooper. This consists of two loop towers, each with24 lengths and a capacity of 1,125 meters of strip. That’s plenty to bridge the stops and starts in the exit part of the plant.
SKIN-PASS MILL
Equally capable of wet or dry skin-pass, the six-highstand achieves a skin-pass degree of up to 3%. TheCVC® stand comes with two bending systems, oneCVC® intermediate shifting with thickness and flat-ness control in a closed control loop, and laser speedmeasurement for adjusting the degree of skin-pass.It takes just 90 seconds using shifting technology tochange the work and intermediate rolls. There is noneed for a tension leveler because of the extensiveflatness controls available here. That gives you ahuge advantage when manufacturing ductile gradesfor automotive body parts.
EXIT ZONE
Next in line are the side trimmers, a strip inspectionsection with an inspection stand, and an oilingmachine for surface protection. After that, a flyingcrank shear cuts the endless strip into lengths. Thisis also where the welded sections are removed andsamples are cut off. As it runs out, two coilers alter-nately wind the strip with the help of strip bindersinto straight-edged coils.

THE ENTRY SECTION
The first stage of the process is welding the individ-ual strips into endless strip. This then passes throughthe multi-stage cleaning station, where impurities leftover from cold rolling are removed. Due to intelligenttechnologies, the water consumption for cleaning is minimal. The strip is paid off the entry looper intothe Drever annealing furnace.
THE ANNEALING PROCESS
Essentially, the annealing process can be brokendown into four phases: heating, heat retention, cool-ing, and overaging. There are specific, automatedprocess sequences and different temperatures, heatretention times, strip speeds and cooling rates foreach steel grade. Depending on the type of steel, the strip is heated to temperatures of between 750und 850 °C. It runs over deflector rolls to form loops. This is how we achieve a long process line that stillkeeps the strip at an exactly constant temperature. That is followed by a cooling zone with a cooling raterelating to the strip of 120 K/s/mm. As a result, theannealing line is highly versatile and suitable for awide range of products.

SHOUGANG,SHOUGANG, continuous annealingline for new complex in Peking
CLEAN TECHNOLOGY
for high-quality cold strip
Peking, with some 15 million inhabitants, representsan enormous challenge in terms of environment protection. Also at home in the region, the ChinaShougang Corporation can be seen as a model forthe future with its new, clean works supplied bySMS Siemag. Shougang closed its old complex tothe west of Peking and moved to the east of the city. This is where a consortium led by SMS Siemagerected a continuous annealing line and a modernpickling-tandem mill for top-quality cold strip withexcellent deep-drawing properties.
DEEP-DRAWING COLD STRIP
for demanding consumers
Most of all, the automotive and household goodsindustries demand sophisticated steel strip. It mustbe weldable and formable, with a flawless surface.Continuous annealing gives cold strip its deep-drawing capability. Here is how the process plays out at Shougang. First, cold rolling in the pickling-tandem mill also erected by SMS Siemag solidifiesthe microstructure of the strip. Then, the annealingfurnace re-crystallizes the structure and remodels it. Finally, controlled cooling creates the requiredmechanical properties without affecting the strip flatness or geometry. As a result, the steel is againeasily formable.

THE EXIT SECTION
To exclude dust, the exit looper is encased. It leads to a six-high skin-pass mill, a looper that compensates forshear changing times, a side-trimming shear, and aninspection station. Then a DUMA oiling machine coatsthe strip with oil. As a rule, this machine adds a protec-tive film of an anti-corrosion product or deep-drawing oil.The oil droplets are applied electrostatically – thinly, pre-cisely, and contact-free – so the surface is never dam-aged. Finally, a flying crank shear cuts the strip before itruns into the coiling system.

BAOSTEELBAOSTEELcontinuous annealing line
HIGH ANNEALING TEMPERATURES
and PROCESS SPEED
The continuous annealing line supplied by SMSSiemag to Baosteel (Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.)produced its first marketable coil in May 2008. Thatwas actually earlier than the contractual date for pro-duction startup. This line is a key project in the newcold strip complex of the Baosteel works in BoashanDistrict, Shanghai.
WIDE PRODUCT RANGE
The plant can produce a wide range of thin, cold-rolled, deep-drawing sheet with high strengths. It iscapable of processing thin products at high annealingtemperatures and fast process speeds. That’s downto a newly developed, automated process controlsystem. The engineering and technology were pro-vided by SMS Siemag in Europe, while most of themechanical equipment was manufactured in Chinaunder SMS supervision.
PLANT PARTS
Almost everything in the plant is fully automated.Included here is coil transport to the entry area, removal of the coil binder, and unwinding onto oneof the two reels that continuously feed strip into theplant. A pre-leveler assists the threading process, then a welding machine joins the material into anendless strip. There is a multi-phase cleaning stagethat completely removes residual cold rolling oils andiron dust. Next in line is the entry looper. It accumu-lates strip as long as a coil is being unwound. Thatmeans if the strip stops briefly during welding in theentry section, the looper still feeds strip continuouslyinto the downstream process stage. The furnaceplant as a whole contains about 2,500 meters ofstrip at any time. After annealing, the microstructureof the steel has recrystallized. Then the strip goesthrough the exit looper and the integrated six-highskin-pass mill. Our customer can rely on getting thedesired material, surface, and flatness propertieswith SMS Siemag rolling technologies, includingCVC® intermediate roll shifting, or work and interme-diate roll bending.

Once again, a small looper keeps the process goingsmoothly when the strip stops at the inspection sta-tion. Before that, a side-trimming shear adjusts thestrip width. Then a DUMA oiling machine coats thesensitive surface with anti-corrosion or deep-drawingoil. The flying crank shear cuts the continuous stripinto the required lengths. Finally, two coilers windthe annealed and skin-passed steel strip into coils. This sheet metal is used in mechanical, household, and electrical goods construction, but above all in the automotive industry. There is a growing demandhere for non-galvanized strip that has gone throughbest-technology annealing and cooling lines plushigh-quality post-treatment.

SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION START
and EXCELLENT RUNUP CURVE
Acting as the leader of a consortium, SMS Siemaghas been charged with erecting two continuousannealing lines for Shougang Jingtang (ShougangJingtang United Iron & Steel Co. Ltd.) on the artificialisland of Caofeidian Island in Hebei Province, north-western China. The first line was ordered in 2007,and it annealed its first strip at the end of 2009. Thisplant produces material for various industries, includ-ing white goods. Just one year after the first contractwas signed, in 2008, Shougang Jingtang orderedanother annealing line, due to go on stream in thesecond half of 2011. The steel strip annealed herewill mainly go to the automotive industry.
TWO ANNEALING LINES
Both lines start with an entry section equipped withtwo payout coilers, a welding machine, a cleaningstation, and an entry looper. Each annealing furnaceconsists of the stages pre-heating, heating, soaking, slow cooling, fast cooling, overaging, final cooling, and water cooling. Depending on the steel grade andstrip geometry, special processes are automaticallyactivated with specific temperatures, soaking times, strip speeds, and cooling rates.
Similarly, the exit sections each come with the same elements: exit looper, skin-pass mill, inspectionstrip looper, side-trimming shear, inspection station,DUMA oiling machine, flying crank shear, and twocoilers.
SUCCESSFUL STARTUP
The big day arrived on August 27, 2009 – that’s whenthe very first steel strip was annealed on the newlyinstalled Shougang Jingtang CAL 1. By the end ofSeptember 2009, a total of 16,283 t of annealedmaterial had already rolled off the production line.Soon after, in October 2009, output had increased toa total of 30,227 t. Wang Qing, the Managing Direc-tor of the Cold Rolling Division of Shougang Jingtang, and his second-in-command Liu Baolin were very sat-isfied with the fast commissioning and high produc-tion figures in the runup phase.
As early as the second day, the plant delivered coils of commercial standard.

MMK and HYSCOMMK and HYSCOCombined hot-dip galvanizingand annealing lines
Yet there is even more to the SMS Siemag productrange. Apart from conventional annealing linesrestricted to recrystallization annealing of carbonsteel strip, we also supply combined hot-dip galvaniz-ing and annealing lines. What does this mean foryou? It gives you the benefit of a single line that canmanufacture two products depending on demandand market situation. You also have the option ofretrofitting the hot-dip galvanizing function into yourexisting annealing line as part of a revamp.
MMK
Russian steel producer MMK (Magnitogorsk Iron andSteel Works) has placed an order with SMS Siemagto supply a cold strip complex with a series of striptreatment plants. Not only a hot-dip galvanizing line, but also a combined hot-dip galvanizing and continu-ous annealing line will be erected in Magnitogorsk in the southern Urals.
Included in the plant is a double entry with laserwelding machine, as well as pre and main cleaning.Once the strip has passed through this section, ittravels into a furnace with pre-heating, heating, retaining, and cooling zones.
Then there are two options. Either the hot strip canbe fed into a zinc pot, coated with liquid zinc andsubsequently cooled. Or it goes into another furnacesection, where it is held for 180 s at a temperatureof between 270 and 430 °C to overage it. Thatremoves carbides from the material to minimize ageing. The annealing treatment ends with final cooling and water cooling. Crucial for MMK is thatthis combined line features a furnace that can pro-duce qualities every bit as good as a state-of-the-artcontinuous annealing line.
Downstream of this process, the strip can be post-treated as required in a 4-high skin-pass mill, a level-er, a roll-coater, or a Duma oiling machine.
SMS Siemag is also supplying the electrical andautomation systems. Ahead of delivery, the entireautomation set-up is assembled in our test centerand thoroughly tested in our Plug & Work process. What is Plug & Work? It simulates the productionsequence and enables us to test and optimize all the automation systems under real-life conditionsbefore we install them in your works.

HYUNDAI HYSCO
Working for Hyundai Hysco in its Dangjin factory,SMS Siemag extensively modernized the annealingline, and upgraded it into a combined annealing andhot-dip galvanizing line. The revamp order was placedin early 2005, and concerned an annealing line thathad been abandoned in the middle of constructionduring the Asian crisis in the mid-nineties.
The project was divided into several phases. The first stage was a thorough status analysis. Includedhere were an assessment of the state of assemblyreached in the nineties, an examination of the localconditions, and intensive talks between SMS and thecustomer’s engineers. Then, the new equipment wasdesigned to suit the old plant and future challenges. That generated a wide-ranging overall plan taking inthe existing plant, new engineering, and the entireelectrical and automation systems.
Work progressed quickly, and on September 1, 2006the revamped plant annealed its first strip. The nextstep was mechanical modification of the existingCAL so that it can also run as a hot-dip galvanizingline. Only a short time later, on October 13, 2006, the first galvanized strip was produced.
The process benefits from a 75-meter cooling tower– the world’s highest in a hot-dip galvanizing line. The maximum process speed for hot-dip galvanizingis 240 m/min. GA (galvannealed) steel strip can beproduced at a maximum speed of 190 m/min.

YICHANG THREE GORGES YICHANG THREE GORGES orders two continuous annealinglines for ultra-thin strip
COLD ROLLING MILL
ON THE THREE-GORGES DAM
On November 21, 2009 SMS Siemag received anorder from Yichang Three Gorges (Yichang ThreeGorges Quantong Colored and Galvanized Co. Ltd.)for two annealing lines for the cold rolling complexcurrently under construction. Both lines processultra-thin strip sheet that is subsequently electrolyti-cally coated and used as packing material. It’s only natural considering the closeness of thethree-gorges dam that the lines and the annealingfurnace supplied by Drever International will beelectrically powered. The first line is due to be com-missioned in May 2011, the second will follow amonth later.
TWO CONTINUOUS ANNEALING
LINES
These lines give the strip the necessary propertiesfor further processing. The recrystallization annealingand downstream post-treatment eliminate the strainhardening in the material from the rolling process. This is also how the mechanical properties and sur-face quality are influenced. The special feature hereis that the lines can process ultra-thin strip (down to 0.14 mm) at a fast continuous process speed (600 m/min), yet still meet high quality demands. Both feature almost identical equipment, and will beinstalled side-by-side with the same strip direction. However, they are set up as “mirror images” so thatthe drive sides are inside of the two lines and thecontrol sides outside.
SCOPE OF SUPPLY AND SERVICES
It’s a major order, with SMS Siemag supplying thedesign and manufacturing of the mechanical equip-ment, and well as carrying out assembly and commis-sioning. The two annealing furnaces from DreverInternational will not be operated as usual with gas,but with electricity. Particularly worth mentioning is anewly developed technology that recovers heat fromthe gas cooling zones for recycling in the pre-heatingzones. That saves a significant amount of energy.
