ANNUAL REPORT 2010 -2011
HIGH JUMP Annual Report 2010-2011
OUR MISSIONHigh Jump equalizes access to education for middle school students who have exhibited exceptional academic ambition and potential, and who are of limited economic means. We provide academic enrichment, counseling and support to students of diverse backgrounds, with the goals of sending our participants to superior college preparatory schools, ensuring their success while they are there, and enhancing their ability to gain admission to highly regarded four-year colleges and universities.
1During the 2.5 years they are enrolled in High Jump, students participate in 350
classroom hours of academic enrichment, including Saturday programming and
six-week intensive summer sessions. High Jump students receive mentoring, high
school application and financial aid counseling, supplies and textbooks and are
exposed to life-changing opportunities such as an annual outdoor educational
leadership experience and other special activities.

from the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends of High Jump,
On behalf of our team of devoted students, teachers, families, Board of Trustees,
volunteers and staff, we are pleased to present High Jump’s Annual Report. Nothing we
accomplish as an organization could happen without the support of our generous donors
and partners. We thank you.
Your commitment to High Jump allows talented students with limited economic
means to overcome the greatest barriers to admission at rigorous college preparatory high
schools and four-year colleges: low grades and test scores. High Jump prepares these
deserving young people for success in high school and beyond through rigorous academic
enrichment and leadership development. Since 1989, High Jump has served more than
850 students. One hundred percent of our alumni matriculate to and graduate
from top college preparatory high schools and more than 85 percent attend college.
We are proud of the work that High Jump has done and are grateful to our High
Jump families, faculty and volunteers, for their dedication to the program.
Indeed, 2010 was a year of major accomplishments, including turning the John Buck
Company Foundation’s generous support into High Jump’s second campus – the Prep 6 program at the University of Chicago Lab Schools. Prep 6 enables 30 of Chicago’s top
sixth graders to benefit from intensive instruction in math, reading and writing in order
to be prepared to excel in High Jump and the high schools they will eventually attend.
High Jump has grown to challenge and support 150 students annually.
Looking forward, we continue to be inspired by the heights High Jump alumni achieve
as they progress on their paths to becoming our nation’s future leaders. In the last year,
they have won accolades such as the Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award and
earned support such as the Posse, Gates Millennium and Aetna Foundation/National
Medical Fellowships Healthcare Leadership scholarships.
We have more work to do as an organization, city and country to be ready for what
the future will demand of us. High Jump’s determined learners and future leaders are
invaluable assets we have been entrusted to guide and challenge. We thank you for all
you have done to support High Jump in the past and for what your future support will
allow High Jump students to achieve.
With gratitude,
Lee Hart, Executive Director

HIGHLIGHTS from 2010-2011 High Jump expanded to a second campus during the summer of 2010. Prep 6 at
the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools allows High Jump to serve 25 percent
more students. This three-year pilot program, funded by the John Buck Company
Foundation, recruits talented rising sixth grade students to participate in a course of
study focused on math, reading and writing and is designed to prepare them for High
Jump’s middle school program and future academic success.
More than 50 top local and national schools attended High Jump’s annual High
School Fair to recruit from the graduating cohort of 65 students.
Independent, boarding and parochial schools committed more than $450,000 in
scholarship funds for 18 graduates of 2011’s Cohort 21.
Twelve students from Cohort 21 (Class of 2011) received scholarships from A Better
Chance, Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation and Link Unlimited.
The Gates Millennium Scholarship was awarded for the second year in a row to
a High Jump alum.
High Jump increased the number of presentations to schools for recruitment by
70 percent, visiting 125 schools in 58 neighborhoods. Recruitment staff delivered
70 in-classroom presentations, distributed more than 1,000 applications, and hosted
two successful community meetings with more than 200 families in attendance.
