INTRODUCTION Hardboard (not to be confused with hardwood), also called high-density
fiberboard (HDF), is a type of fiberboard, which is an engineered wood
product. This product is also known under Isorel or asonite brand
na!es.
It is si!ilar to particle board and !ediu!-density fiberboard, but is
denser and !uch stronger and harder because it is !ade out of
e"ploded wood fibers that ha#e been highly co!pressed.
$onse%uently, the density of hardboard is &' lbs. or !ore per cubic foot
( kg*!+) and is usually about - lbs. per cubic foot ('/kg*!+).
It differs fro! particle board in that the bonding of the wood fibers
re%uires no additional !aterials, although resin is often added.
The hardboard #ariety is !ade without resin. The HDF #ersion is !ade
with resin. 0nlike particle board, it will not split or crack. HDF is a !uch stronger board co!pared to DF and it gi#es a
s!ooth and unifor! surface where#er it is applied. HDF does
not ha#e any grain and it can be finished by applying paint on it.
If you want wood grain finishing then you would need to put a
#eneer or teak ply on the HDF board

MANUFACTURE
The process of manufacturing fiberboard combines natural wood
fibers with synthetic polymer resins for bonding purposes. These
materials are mixed and then molded together in a dry environment
using high temperature and pressure to bond and shape the mixture
into individual panels. This method of manufacture in a dry process
helps to bond the elements together in a more uniform density that
retains its composite structure

USES
0nlike solid wood, hardboard has no grain.
1 wood #eneer can be glued onto it to gi#e the appearance of
solid wood.
7ther o#erlays include For!ica, la!inated papers, cera!ics, and
#inyl.
It has !any uses, such as a substrate. It is used in construction,
flooring, furniture, ho!e appliances, auto!obiles and cabinetry,
and is popular a!ong acrylic and oil painters as a painting
surface due to its econo!ical price (though it !ust be coated
with gesso or can#as before use).
Hardboard has often been used as the surface !aterial in
clipboards, especially older !odels. It is also used as the final layer in !any skateboard ra!ps and
the half-pipe.

MAINTENANCE
To protect "! the steps below should be ta#en.
$a#e sure that the board does not get in touch with water as it can
damage it.
%lean the board with a clean soft cloth to remove the dust.
o not mop with damp cloth.
&nce you finish the "! with paint or veneer wood then the
maintenance steps for those finishes should be followed accordingly.
