strm.02:deepvisualisationThe represenTaTion of archiTecTure has changed formidably over The lasT 20 years wiTh The advenT of digiTal represenTaTion and compuTaTional Tools. The waTercolour, pen and ink Techniques uTilized in order To express The dynamic and maTerial qualiTies of a building have now been replaced by The pixel. alThough many of The digiTal visualizaTions ThaT are now showcased on The various blogs and siTes have a compleTe 3d rig behind Them, a large proporTion of These images are sTill composed in a similar manner To The hand drawn Techniques ThaT preceded Them. new processes of cuTTing and pasTing, layering, masking Transforming and 3d maTerial painTing have lead To The producTion of framed images and animaTions which can deliver a sTory specific To The building, conTexT and iTs audience.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTfirsT and foremosT i would like To express my graTiTTude To alex Jung and oliver hessian for Their TuTorings. Their experiTise in digiTal visu-alisaTion and modelling sofTwares had greaTly aided me ThroughouT The semesTer, be iT producing The digiTal models, rendering or posT-producTion in phoToshop. in addiTion To This were Their remarkable insighTs Through-ouT The enTire visualisaTion proJecT, which had helped my group parTner and i enormously in refining The works required for final presenTaTion.

one of The imporTanT aspecTs for archiTecTural communicaTion This semes-Ter was To experimenT wiTh digiTal sofTwares like rhinoceros, grasshopper, kangaroo, weaverbird, in addiTion To exploring rendering Techniques us-ing maxwell and 3dsmax. The obJecTive was To make use of The advanced visualisaTion Technology To realise our concepTs Through The final pho-TomonTages laTer. various digiTal TransformaTion Techniques had been explored, including surface panelling, voronoi, surface relaxaTion, eTc.

during This semesTer we’ve chosen voronoi as our primary Theme for The communicaTion visualisaTion. voronoi , named afTer famous maThemaTi-cian george voronoi, denoTes a special decomposiTion of space deTer-mined predominanTly by relaTive disTance beTween poinTs on a euclidean plane. This noTion of voronoi decomposiTion could be found in naTurally occurring elemenTs – like bones. looking inTo The microscopic vision of bone marrow, we were uTTerly amazed by how The calciTe sTrucTures in-Terweave gracefully To form slender and sophisTicaTed voronoi paTTerns. we Then reproduced The voronoi sTrucTure in digiTal realm, in order To resolve iTs complexiTy and envision iTs poTenTial To our communica-Tion design. ThroughouT The process we envisioned The voronoi sTruc-Ture being siTed in a deserT/canyon seTTing, a promising locaTion which denoTes The noTions of barren, desolaTe and decayed. we also imagined The sTrucTures being lofTed upon sTill deserT waTer, in order To express The lighTness and groTesque of such alien inTervenTion in a naTural siTe.

in maThemaTics, voronoi , named afTer famous maThemaTician george voronoi, denoTes a special decomposiTion of space deTermined predominanTly by relaTive disTance beTween poinTs on a euclidean plane. voronoi can be easily found in naTure, while iTs concepT is largely applicable in fields of science and Technology.

points became the basis for grasshopper to

calculate optimal decomposition of space. the points were scattered randomly in rhinocer-os before exporting them into grasshopper.

25

- selection of points- export into grasshopper- voronoi will be baked through the last ‘mesh’ parameter.

the configuration of points are crucial to calculating voronoi. dispersing points on 2d-plane generates voronoi surface, whilistin xyz directions produces voronoi lattice.

surfaceGENERATION OF

relaxationin physics, relaxaTion means a change in The posiTion of enTire layers of aToms relaTive To The bulk posiTions. in a normal relaxing mechanism, The surface layers move in a direcTion normal To The surface plane, usually resulTing in a parabolic deformaTion of maTTer.

animationanimation essentially formed one of the crucial aspects in our voronoi visualisation. the focus of our animation was to animate water photore-alistically, while tweaking the daylighting system in 3dsmax to show how the undulating water surface responded to the change in light qualities and thus altering the form of the voronoi structure through the reflections.
