Helen L. Shafer was born December 12, 1928 at Ryder,
North Dakota, the only child of Edwin and Clara (Vasfaret)
Sather. Helen’s family farmed in the Ryder area, and she
graduated from Ryder High School in 1947. Helen attended
Minot State Teachers College until she was united in marriage
to David R. Shafer on December 20, 1948 in Ryder, North
Dakota.
In January 1949 Helen and David took over operations of
Helen's parents' farm at rural Ryder for approximately five
years. In October 1953 David went to Tioga and was involved
in the building of the Tioga Gas Plant. In June 1954 Helen and their son Gary joined
David in Tioga when housing became available. Dave and Helen lived in the rural
Tioga area until they built a new home in town, in 1961.
Helen enjoyed sewing and baking. She always made sure that there was an unlim-
ited supply of her famous Peanut Butter Bars when her husband, son, and grandsons
went deer hunting. Her two favorite outdoor activities were hunting upland game with
David and Gary and their numerous fishing trips to Northern Canada. Helen and Dave
enjoyed camping and spent several vacations traveling throughout the United States
and Canada. They also enjoyed 13 winters in Yuma, Arizona.
Helen was an active member of the Tioga First Lutheran Church.
