HEAT TRANSFERS

HEAT TRANSFER - the transfer of thermal

energy between substances due to a difference in their

temperature

THERMAL ENERGY is the total of all the kinetic and potential energy of all the particles in a substance.

TEMPERATURE is a measurement of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in an object. It is measured with a thermometer. It is a measurement of the internal energy contained in an object.

As the temperature increases, so does thermal energy (because the kinetic

energy of the particles increased).

The flow of thermal energy

(HEAT) always flows from warmer to

cooler objects

Cup gets cooler while hand gets

warmer

Ice gets warmer while hand gets

cooler

CONDUCTION is the

transfer of heat through

a material by direct contact.

CONVECTION is the

transfer of heat in a

fluid (gas or liquid) as a

result of the movement of the fluid

itself

RADIATION is the transfer of heat via

electromagnetic waves

through space
