About HDL

• HDL, established in 1985, specialized in developing, manufacturing and distributing of Home/building automation and theatre lighting control system for businesses and end users around the world.

About HDL

• HDL produces 4 types of products: 1. HDL Bus Home/Building

automation system

2. HDL KNX/EIB Bus series

3. HDL theatre Lighting Control system

4. HDL LED Lights series

Why use control system? Why good old mechanics does not work anymore

Mechanical vs. Control SystemLess connections

Mechanical vs. Control SystemLess cable

Mechanical vs. Control SystemSimple use

Mechanical vs. Control SystemCentral control

How does it (normally) workWorks for any automation, not only home automation

Control System Schematic

Connections

TCP/IP : The standard International communication Language & Protocol, it is short for “Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol”.

RS485 :RS 485 is commonly used in Data Communication , Computer Network, and also the Distributed Industry Control system, for the data converter and transmission.

DMX512 :DMX is short for Digital Multiplex , 512 means there are maximum 512 bytes of Control Signal in the DMX512 cables at one time. The Protocol was made by Technology Association of American drama in 1986. It was mainly used for the communication between console and Dimmer but now the DMX512 Protocol is expanded to other device, such as color changer, computer lights, Smoker Generator and so on.

DALI :DALI is short for ----Digital Addressable Lighting Interface. It defines the communication protocol between ballast s and controller. Those DALI ballasts use Lower Voltage cable as the Lighting control signal bus.All ballast s on bus can be assigned an address automatically, so the fluorescent light can be control led separately or by random group control

KNX :Europe based international standard in home/building automation field.

OPC :OPC is short for ---OLE for Process Control. It is an industry process control standard. Before the birth of OPC , there is no unified standard interface between hardware driver and application software. OPC aims to provide an standard interface for communication between different devices and software from different companies.

LON :LonWorks (local operation network) is a networking platform specifically created to address the needs of control applications. The platform is built on a protocol created by Echelon Corporation for networking devices over media such as twisted pair, powerlines, fiber optics, and RF. It is used for the automation of various functions within buildings such as lighting and HVAC; see building automation.

ModBus :Modbus is a serial communications protocol originally published by Modicon (now Schneider Electric) in 1979 for use with its programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Simple and robust, it has since become a de facto standard communication protocol, and it is now a commonly available means of connecting industrial electronic devices.

● We use RS485 protocol for the communication between

each device, then we use TCP/IP protocol for the

communication of Ethernet interface device

● BUS cable working voltage is DC24V

● The baud rate of HDL-BUS is 9600 bit/s

● Distributed type control system

● Automatic recovery technology

●Equipment warm boot technology

Multi-Network System Schematic

Limitations / Recommendations

• 1200m (recommend – 1000m) of cable inside one

network

• 64 devices in one network (if cable < 500m)

• 32 devices in one network (if cable is 500-1000m)

• 255 networks connect together by TCP/IP

interfaces

Cable and connectors

• Option 1: HDL-Cable (4 cores x 0,8mm), best for HDL Bus and KNX

• Option 2: Cat5e UTP, good for HDL Bus

Connectors

• Old connector

• Any cable is good

• New connector

• HDL-Cable (4 cores x 0,8mm) is better

Power

• 750mA Power Supply

• 2.4A Power Supply

• 24V by default

• Keep more than 15V per device with voltage drop in mind

• How much mA each device consumes? See Catalogue (20-40mA usually)

More than one power supply? Important!
