TheFoundation is devoted to preserving andspreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwideand follows the advice of His Holiness theDalai Lama. It consists of about 160affiliated monasteries, nunneries, centres,retreat facilities, publishing houses, onlineteaching programs, a prison project, healthfacilities and charities in 41 countries. OurCentre is also affiliated with FPMTA whichrepresents the 26 FPMT centres andprojects in Australia.

Lama Yeshe Geshe SonamKyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Welcome to

Lama Thubten Yeshe1935 – 84, Founder of the FPMTLama Yeshe was a charismatic teacherwho was ordained as a monk when hewas eight but forced to flee Tibet in 1959when, as he said: “In that year theChinese kindly told us that it was time toleave Tibet and meet the outside world.”He established Kopan Monastery inNepal and started teaching westernersin the ear ly 1970s. In 1975, heestablished the Foundation for theMahayana Tradition (FPMT) to which agrowing number of international centreswould become affiliated.

Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche,Spiritual Director of the FPMTRinpoche was the leading disciple ofLama Yeshe. Born near Mt Everest inNepal in 1946, he was recognised at ayoung age as the reincarnation of ahighly-realised lama. Since first visitingthe west with Lama Yeshe in 1974,Rinpoche has travelled tirelesslyteaching and inspiring students in thegrowing number of FPMT centresaround the world. (Kyabje is an honorifictitle given rarely to very high lamas).

Geshe Ngawang Sonam,Resident Teacher at HayagrivaThe title Geshe is a monastic degreeawarded after many years' study andpractice. In Geshe Sonam's case, hebecame a monk at 12 and studied andrigorously debated the great TibetanBuddhist texts in the Gelugpa (yellowhat) tradition for 22 years at Sera JeyMonastery in southern India. Geshela'stranslator is Matt Whiston.

As it is easier to meditate in agroup led by an experiencedstudent, the following sessions,suitable for new or experiencedstudents, are offered:

10am SundayLed by an experienced westernstudent.A general guided meditationsuitable for new or moreexperienced students ondeveloping mindfulness andaspects of the Buddhist path.By donation.

10am TuesdayLed by Venerable Drolma.Venerable Drolma has beenordained as a nun since 1999 andfor 14 years taught meditation insix prisons.Involves relaxation and meditationon Buddhist concepts.By donation.

We offer teachings by a Tibetan lama, meditations, yoga, pujas and special events includingvisiting teachers. Except for visiting teachers, we do not charge for Buddhist-based events atour Centre but, as we are entirely dependent on the generosity of students, donations afterteachings , meditations, etc. are appreciated.

Pujas are traditional chanting ceremonies inEnglish and Tibetan, the merit of which can bededicated to help bring about particular goals.

It is traditional to bring an offering of food orflowers to pujas. Individuals can also sponsorpujas for particular purposes. Contact ouroffice for details.

Guru PujaHelps create or strengthen the link with aspiritual teacher. Generally held twice amonth. Check our eNews or website for dates.By donation.

Tara Puja2pm on the last Saturday of the monthTara is the female manifestation of Chenrezig,the Buddha of compassion, and helps toquickly bring about requested aims.By donation.

White Tara Long Life Practice4pm on the last Saturday of the month.Includes a short meditation and recitation ofthe White Tara mantra which can assist incountering illnesses and life hindrances.By donation.

Wheel of LifeThe Wheel of Life group run workshops to helppeople deal with grief and loss in a Buddhistcontext as well as monthly Medicine Buddha pujas.

Pure Land of the Indestructible BuddhaThis project is working towards building a centrefor end-of-life spiritual and emotional care.

Teachings with Geshe Sonam“FPMT is extremely fortunate, unbelievably fortunate that we have many qualified

teachers, resident teachers who have spent their lives in a monastery on the basis of living in

vinaya, guarding one's vows, one's mind. And then extensively studied Buddhist philosophy, the

whole path to enlightenment, the four noble truths and who are not only scholars but are living in

practice; that is an extremely important moral for us.” Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

7.30pm TuesdayThese teachings can be attended on a casualbasis or done as part of a multi-text Basic

Program over five years involving discussions,homework, tests and retreat which intensifiesthe experience of the teachings. By donation.

3.30pm Q&A and Cakewith GeshelaThe last Sunday of each month followingthe teaching. Ask any questions, bring upany issues you would like to raise withGeshe Sonam. All welcome.

Dharma Protector Prayers4.30pm on the last Sunday of themonth.These practices invoke wrathfulaspects of the Buddha's mind to helpremove hindrances to our spiritualpractice and to the success of ourCentre. They involve chanting inTibetan.By donation.

Yamantaka Self Initiation(initiates only).1pm set up for 2pm start on Saturday

afternoons as advised.By donation.

YogaRegular yoga classes are held throughout the year by two experienced andqualified yoga teachers who offer a variety of yoga styles to cater for studentsfrom beginners to experienced practitioners. Classes are held most daysexcept Friday and Sunday. Check our eNews or website for times.
