Havasu 4-
Wheelers,
Fall is here and cooler
weather is coming, really!
I would like to wish a
hearty welcome back to all
of you who escaped the
heat of the Havasu
summer. We have a full slate of runs scheduled for October
culminating in Willie‘s Wobblin Gobblin run which scares
up a good time on Halloween night. If you haven‘t signed
up yet, check them out and sign up for some fun.
Speaking of runs, we can always use more trail bosses. If
you haven‘t led a run yet give it a try. Any of the existing
trail bosses will be willing to help you. Trail boss meetings
are scheduled the day of the membership meeting and are
very informative for new trail bosses. If there is a trail or
destination that is on your wish list and haven‘t seen it, try
being the trail boss. Remember, no dust at the front!
I would like to encourage you to join us for the London
Bridge Days Parade on October 15th. We had a record
turnout last year in support of our efforts working with the
BLM, and would like to see a similar turnout this year. We
will find out our meeting place about a week prior to the
parade, so that information will be coming to you via e-
mail. Please try to fit this into your schedule since we will
be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the London Bridge.
There are lots of other fun activities on the agenda such as
the Veteran‘s Day Parade, Turkey Roast and Jeep Games
in November and the Garage Sale and Holiday Party in
January. And we will also do our civic duty by scheduling a
Highway cleanup on October 24th. Desert cleanups and
junk car removals will be scheduled later in the season.
So much going on I can see it‘s going to be a busy fun-filled
Fall.
Happy Trails, Cheryl

Safety Rant of the Month –
– Adopt A Highway Clean Up
and Desert Clean Up - Why
I gave up yard sales and
started picking trash instead
T ax free money, boat covers, auto parts, fresh air,
cold drinking water, sun tans, adoring crowds of
passing well-wishers, a walk in the fresh morning
breeze, and unlimited camaraderie – what else does a guy
or girl really need?
Well some folks would answer that with ―a life you idiot‖
but see, that‘s where I think they are wrong. I saw the joy
in Willie Williams‘s eyes when she found the outhouse
last year and the Victoria‘s Secrets outfits this year
(How‘s all that working out for you Snake?). The
whooping and hollering from Buck Halterman when he
found all that money! Jim Bowen and his new boat cover,
Rodger Delk and his new beer can coolers, Ladell Olson
and the boat parts he needed. The list of miracle finds
and the happy, ecstatic throngs of H4W‘ers goes on and
on. All of this - and its provided FREE to our
membership as a benefit.
Incredible as this all must seem the original reason for
these clean up activities was to provide a form of ―giving
back‖ to desert areas we enjoy and love to explore. We
have one large Desert and two smaller Highway Clean
Ups each season. Please join your fellow H4W‘ers are we
―do our part to give back.‖
Our first Highway Clean Up of the season is
scheduled for October 24th, contact Sue Guibord

Rattler Pass Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011
S ix jeeps with one guest passenger left the Scenic
Turnout at 8AM.
Since we had all been up $5.00 Falls before, we
opted to bypass that little challenge. It is a 2-wheel
drive trail out to the actual start of Rattler Pass. The
first 5 miles of the trail has been traveled lately, but
still not full of hoop-tee-dos.
The last 5 miles was almost like virgin trail. Their
were not any tire tracks, motorcycle, quad or jeep. In
fact, if I had not been using my GPS, I could not have
found the trail.
The Rattler Pass rating should be revised according to
our rating system. Our club-rating chart states the
equipment required to do any given run establishes
the run difficulty level. The six jeeps on this run only
needed their lockers at two obstacles. No one was
towed, strapped or winched. I only used 4-wheel high
except when I engaged my lockers. This would/should
lower the rating from a level 4 to a level 3 ¾. Recent
rains in the area have filled the canyon floor with sand
that makes the run less difficult.
The total distance round trip from start to finish is 18
miles. Since we did not stop for lunch, we were back at
the Scenic Turnout at 11:15 AM.
I want to thank Paul Wheatly for doing a good job of
being my Tailgunner.

Trail Talk - 4 - October 2011
Trail Talk - 5 - October 2011
An estimated 200,000 people a year flock to the desert valley for recreational pursuits: hiking, camping, rock-hounding, star-gazing and a new sport
called "geocaching," a treasure hunt using GPS technology. Moviemakers use the desert floor for chase scenes. But the valley has gained its greatest
acclaim in recent years as an untamed, unregulated venue for off-road vehicles. Off-roaders take their Jeeps, motorcycles, dune buggies, ATVs, "rock
crawlers" and other souped-up vehicles over, around and through the rills and hills and rocks. The annual King of the Hammers race, billed as the
toughest desert race in the nation, draws more than 20,000 participants and spectators. "There's not another place in the country where we could hold
o u r r a c e , " s a i d D a v e C o l e , o n e o f t h e r a c e o r g a n i z e r s . " T h i s i s o u r D a y t o n a 5 0 0 . "
The Marine Corps, whose Twentynine Palms base is directly adjacent to Johnson Valley, also likes the valley's challenging terrain — for similar yet
different reasons. The Marine Corps would like to include the land inside the boundaries of its Air-Ground Combat Center as a training area for large-
scale, live-fire exercises where three battalions could simultaneously practice assaulting a fixed location. The land is controlled by the federal Bureau of
Land Management. Johnson Valley would give the Marine Corps a large-scale training capability it lacks at any of its bases, according to Marine brass.
Even in a budget-tightening season when other projects are being dropped or trimmed, the Marine Corps has allocated $60 million for the expansion
project. Gen. James Amos, the commandant, considers the expansion "absolutely essential to providing the requisite training area for preparing Ma-
r i n e s t o m e e t t h e c h a l l e n g e s o f t h e f u t u r e s e c u r i t y e n v i r o n m e n t . "
The off-roaders look at the valley and see an exciting, irreplaceable place for their sport. Amos looks at the valley and sees a place to provide training
that will enhance the "survivability" of Marines in combat. The off-roaders and the merchants who depend on all the recreationalists are not going
down without a fight. When the Marines opened up their expansion proposal for public review in May, more than 25,000 responses were received. The
Marines have offered a compromise: the heart of the Johnson Valley racing area would be available 10 months a year and closed for two months when
a major exercise is planned. But expansion skeptics feel that the dual-use idea would be withdrawn as soon as the first civilian wanders innocently or
defiantly into the midst of Marine training or is hurt by ordnance left when the training is over.
The dispute features two sides that, philosophically, are aligned. Both believe in living life on the edge, facing down danger in the desert. The Marine
Corps sent a color guard to this year's King of the Hammers. Off-duty Marines have their own desert racing team. And expansion opponents, many of
them military veterans, feel a twinge at opposing the Marines during a time of war. "It's going to have a devastating effect on recreation," said Ray
Pessa, a Yucca Valley activist. "National defense comes first, and if they say they need it, so be it. But I'm not sure they've looked at all the alterna-
tives." The Marines agree there are other expansion alternatives on the eastern and southern edges of the base but insist that none is as good as Johnson
Valley on the west. The final environmental impact statement is set for completion in early January. The Department of Navy's decision on which, if
any, alternative to select is scheduled for April, in time for the issue to be sent to Congress for inclusion in the defense appropriations bill.
Beyond the effect on off-roaders and business owners, Betty Munson, with the Johnson Valley Improvement Assn., sees a loss of the freedom that lures
people to the austere and often blisteringly hot desert. "Johnson Valley is all that is left of the California desert where you can travel without any re-
strictions, go camping without a fee, go anywhere, any time," Munson said. "There's a lot of freedom out there that people won't have anymore."
Ninety percent of Marines deploying to Afghanistan come to the Twentynine Palms base for live-fire and other training called Mojave Viper. A re-
created Afghan village has 1,500 buildings and is populated by up to 1,000 Afghan "role players." Marines are also taught to detect and dodge roadside
bombs, the Taliban weapon of choice. Training is continuously tweaked to include lessons learned from the battlefield. But what the base lacks is space
t o h a v e t h r e e b a t t a l i o n s c o n v e r g i n g o n a n " e n e m y " l o c a t i o n .
Although the Twentynine Palms base is sprawling — 600,000 acres, compared to 125,000 acres at Camp Pendleton — there are various impediments to
having a simultaneous live-fire exercise involving three battalions on the move. Among those impediments are federally protected tortoises. The tortoise
issue annoys the off-roaders. If there were more tortoises in Johnson Valley, that would probably kill the idea of annexing it to the base, said Cole, who
loves Johnson Valley so much that he was married on one of its promontories. "If I was having a tortoise race, that would be seen as valuable," said
C o l e . " B u t I ' m h a v i n g a p e o p l e r a c e , a n d t h a t ' s n o t s e e n a s v a l u a b l e . "
The Marine Corps has been studying expansion of Twentynine Palms for nearly a decade, with each study coming to much the same conclusion: John-
son Valley is the best alternative. Under the Marine Corps' preferred alternative plan, 108,530 acres of Johnson Valley would be permanently closed to
the public. An additional 38,137 acres would be open 10 months a year. Although the issue involves federally managed land, members of California's
Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission toured Johnson Valley in late May and, after hearing testimony from all sides, sent a letter to the
Marine Corps saying it could not support the expansion plan. Commission members suggested that the Marines look at sharing one of the spacious
bases in California or Nevada belonging to other branches of the military, possibly the Army's Ft. Irwin, the Navy's China Lake, or Edwards Air Force
Base. The Marines say that such an agreement would be overly expensive and impractical for a variety of reasons.
Daphne Greene, deputy director of California State Parks, said the Marines are to be complimented for seeking off-roaders' opinions and looking for a
compromise. But the inclusion of Johnson Valley in the expansion plan would be too great a loss of a natural asset that Californians have long enjoyed,
she said. "We wouldn't let the Marines take over Yosemite," Greene said.
Off-roaders and Marines in contention for rugged desert The Corps wants to expand its Twentynine Palms base for major combat exercises, but civilians fear the loss of a
popular recreational area.
Off-road vehicles stir up dust in Johnson
Valley, where the Marine Corp wants to
extend its Twentynine Palms base to
accommodate major combat exercises.

RATING DESCRIPTION
1 EASIEST: Passable by stock vehicles. Gentle fairly wide grades.
2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.
3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.
3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.
3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. 33” tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.
3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, Some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.
4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.
5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
