“Moses” “Minty”

• Harriet was born into slavery in 1819 or 1820 in Maryland.

• Both of Harriet’s parents were slaves.

• At age 25, Harriet married John Tubman, a free African American.

Harriet Was Scared She Would Be Sold South.

She was so scared of being sold that Harriet escaped slavery by using the Underground Railroad.

She hid in a wagon and was smuggled into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Underground Railroad Harriet joined the

Underground Railroad to help free her family.

She helped free 300 slaves. She never lost a passenger. This is how she received the nickname Moses.

Harriet the Spy

Harriet Tubman served as a spy, a soldier, a cook and a nurse during the Civil War. The war fought in the

United States between northern (Union) and southern (Confederate) states from 1861 to 1865, in which the Confederacy sought to separate the southern states from the northern states.

Harriet Tubman fought for equal rights for African Americans and women until her death in 1913.
