Hardin County Fair
The Record2 Hardin County Fair Reflections
SpotlightThe weather for the small animal shows
couldn’t have been much better as the 87-degree temperature and the slight breeze was a nice reprieve from the scortching temperatures of the week prior. The rabbit and poultry shows kicked off the Hardin County Fair at midday and late afternoon on Wednesday.
First out of the cage was the rabbit show. Contestants showed rabbits in the large 4-H building in categories including meat pen, fancy rabbit, commercial rabbit, and showmanship. Some contestants showed rabbits in multiple categories such as Brad Mayland and Amy Gilmore.
The judge spent plenty of time looking over each individual rabbit even though some contestants had multiple entries in one or more of the categories. When the time came to name the grand champion and reserve champions, the judge told the crowd what he was looking for, that made him come to the decision. Some contestants were so
close to winning a particular category that the aesthetic value of fur patterns on a rabbits ears or softness of their fur was the deciding factor.
Next up was the Poultry show held in the smaller 4-H Rabbits and Poultry building, which included chickens and waterfowl. Poultry show entries were judged on a number of factors including the production of eggs, the aesthetics of their plumage, the straightness of the points on their combs and completeness of their feathers.
Contestants entered hens and roosters in categories like fancy breeding stock, production poultry, waterfowl and broiler. As in the rabbit show, many contestants had multiple entries in each category. The contestants themselves were also judged for the showmanship category. Areas like the appearance and the mannerisms of the contestants as well as the way they answered questions about themselves and the animals they were showing.

Amazing fair! We salute all participants!
On Wednesday evening, festivities at the Hardin County Fair began with the parade, drawing a crowd from near and far. The streets were lined with kids, their sacks in hand patiently waiting for the handfuls of candy to be thrown. Parade goers were able to view farm machinery, horses, various businesses’ floats and royalty candidates. Following the parade the crowd moved their attentions to the 4-H building for the corona-tion of the 2012 Hardin County Fair Queen. Through the pageant, the attendees were introduced to the candidates by Representa-tive Annette Sweeny. She introduced each of the candidates while telling a little informa-tion about each. As all the candidates stood
on stage anxiously waiting for their name to be called, Sweeny announced this year’s Ms. Congeniality Allison Brown, of New Provi-dence. Next was runner- up. Due to a tied vote, there were two contestants awarded this title. Co-Runners–up were Allison Brown of New Providence and Mary Jane Hadler of Iowa Falls. Crowned as this year’s 2012 Har-din County Fair Queen was Katy Williams of Owasa. Queen Williams was charged with the duty of presenting awards to the live-stock shows contestants. She will also rep-resent Hardin County at the Iowa State Fair which will be held from August 9-19.

Spotlight You put on a great fair this year!
1333 Highway 96 Gladbrook 641-473-2403
Thursday morning July 12, came early for the swine show contestants as they groomed their animals and lined up for the first show. The show was divided into class-es ranging from derby gilts and barrows to market animals, and a showmanship por-tion. Derby barrows were put into four dif-ferent classes by weight that ranges from 220 up to 281. Some things Judge Jarrod Bakker said he looked for in determining a grand over a reserve champion swine were good profiling, long-necked, level-topped, and square make up. The market barrow
class had five different divisions with ani-mals weighing from 236 to 302. The market gilt portion of the show had four divisions. In Derby Barrows/gilts Heather Schnitker took the Grand Champion title and Autumn Schott took Reserve Champion. Next up to show were Market Gilts. Conner Rieks’ 230 pound gilt helped him take Grand Cham-pion. Ashley McEwen took Reserve for her 233 pound gilt. Last in the Swine Show was Market Barrows. Conner Reiks took Grand Champion and his brother Curtis Reiks took Reserve Champion.

on your television, but rather a show where the exhibitors were judged on how well they know and handle their animal. The show had many classes of completion which included age of presenters, top dog, showmanship, obedi-ence and agility.

SpotlightA total of 26 head of breeding
cattle, as well as 48 head of market beef cattle competed in the ring during the 2012 Hardin County Fair Beef show under the watchful eyes of judge Tim Louden of Creston.
A good crowd of parents grandparents, as well as interested spectators, watched and listened as Judge Louden repeatedly praised the Hardin County 4-H and FFA members for the way that they raised and handled their animals in the ring. Often he would reference his experiences in showing cattle and gave the young people advice as the judging progressed.
As is the case each year, the ribbons and trophies are auctioned off on Sunday, with the proceeds going toward 4-H scholarships and activities and equipment for members.
Daniel Hornung of the Concord Sherman Challengers showed the Grand Champion market beef for the fourth straight year. Reserve Champion beef honors went to Kylee Zoske of the Tipton Grant Toppers club
Showmanship honors in the beef show went to Brant Friest (Junior) of the Tipton Grant Toppers, Zach Armstrong (Intermediate) of the Union-Whitten Hustlers, and Colin Johnson (Senior) of the Ellis-Jackson Ag Stars

2012 Hardin County Fair Llama Show
Ariana Huey shows in the Little Britches Show
Not only did presenters show their llamas at the Hardin County Llama show, they learned new tips and tricks for taking care of their llamas. After talking to the judge, they also had to take the llamas through an action packed obstacle course full of danger at every turn! At least you would think it was full of danger after seeing the reluctance of some of the llamas to complete the course. Showmen first had to take their llamas around
the ring so the audience could see them. The judge wasn’t only listening to the responses of the presenters, she was also examining them. The llama had to keep its feet together and stand in a certain position while being judged. She listened to the exhibitors responses, and recommended that everyone brush up on their llama facts. When it was all said and done,
the winners of each class were awarded Showmanship awards. Then the arena was cleared, and the obstacle course began. As the competition proceeded to classes with older showmen, the obstacles got tougher. The obstacle classes ended with young presenters who had to be guided though the course by older presenters. The show was rounded off with a costume portion, and the judging process started over as all the llamas came back into the arena dressed in various clothing.
