Inthemovieclassic“It’saWonderfulLife,”GeorgeBaileyexcitedlyproclaims,“I’m going to build things! I’m gonnabuildairfields,I’mgonnabuildskyscrap-ers a hundred stories high, I’m gonnabuildbridgesamilelong....” That declaration inspired a young Matthew Morton. When hisfriends were outside playing, he’d be in his backyard building“cities.”Itsparkedacareerinterestinplanningandpublicservice.Hemajoredingeographyincollegeandbecamealocalgovern-mentplanner,workinghiswayuptobecomeCityAdministratorintwocitiesinWashingtonState. Morton started a new chapter in his career in April, when hebecame Palm Coast’s new City Manager. In the position, hemanagesday-to-dayoperations,puts togetherabudget for theCity Council, and implements the priorities and direction of theCityCouncil. HevaluescitizeninputandengagementasheandhisstaffhelpthePalmCoastCityCouncilmaintainthecommunity’sexceptionalqualityoflifeandachieveitsvisionforthefuture.There’salwaysanewchallengein localgovernment,hesaid,andhebelievesinfindingsolutionsinpartnershipwiththestakeholders.

“Residents are our best tactical strategists. They have a passion and knowledge,” he said. “I love to hear people’s ideas, but also their

ideas for solutions.” Morton came to Palm Coast with more than 20 years ofexperienceinlocalgovernment.HegrewupinFlorida,CaliforniaandWashington,earninghisundergraduatedegreefromCentralWashington University. He earned an Executive Master of Pub-lic Administration degree from the University of South Dakota.He completed the Harvard Kennedy School’s Senior ExecutiveinStateandLocalGovernmentprogramin2017,andbeforethatattendedtheWaltDisney Instituteto learntheDisneyapproachforleadershipandcustomerserviceengagement.HeisanICMA-credentialed manager through the International City/CountyManagement Association and was recognized by ICMA for 20yearsofexecutiveserviceattheorganization’sannualconferencein2017. MortonandhiswifeWendyhavetwochildren.Inhisfreetime,heenjoysurbanhiking–aperfectfitforPalmCoast’s130milesofconnecting,tree-linedtrails!

In deciding her next step in life after herhusbanddiedofALS,CyndiMorelewiczknewshewanted two things:colorandhappiness.Allsignspointedtoart. MorelewiczturnedtothePalmCoastBusi-nessAssistanceCenter(BAC)asshepreparedtoopenafranchiseofPainting with a Twist–astudioofferingfunartsessionsforanyskilllevelwhereaspecificdesignispainteduponthestep-by-stepdirectionofartists.Herstu-dio at Island Walk Shopping Center recentlycelebrateditsfirstanniversary.

ThePalmCoastBAC isaone-stop resource for the

business community. Located at City Hall, itoffers free business consulting services topeoplewhowanttostartabusinessoralreadyhaveoneestablished.BACconsultantshelpedMorelewiczwithpermitting, licensing,financ-ing, applications, crafting a business plan,researchingdemographics,leasingproperties,andmoralsupport.Nowthatshe’sbeenopenayear, shestillcallswithquestionsonocca-sion,andrecommendstheBACtoothersinterestedinstartingabusiness. Earlier this year, the BAC added new andexpanded tools to aid local businesses –including a business-friendly website, step-by-step Business Guide to assist businessownersandentrepreneursalike,andBusinessNavigationServices toprovide technicalandpermitting assistance.
