• Some words in German are stupid because they make no sense but you have to learn them anyways.

Klappen ≠ Klappe• Klappen means to flap or strike together. Most

frequently, however, it means to work out well, click. Alles klappte gut means everything went off well. Klappe means lid or trap. The expression zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen means to kill two birds with one stone. Beifall klatschen means to applaud.

• In addition to control, this word also means to check or inspect.

Lachen ≠ Lache• This is a verbal noun meaning laughter. Do not

confuse it with die Lache, which means pool or puddle.

Last ≠ Dauern, Währen

• This means load or burden. To last is dauern, Währen. A shoemaker’s last is Leisten.

Leier ≠ Lügner

• This means lyre Music. A liar is Lügner.

List ≠ Verzeichnis, Liste

• This means cunning. Verzeichnis, Liste means list.

• This does not mean mist (Nebel) but manure or dung.

Neuigkeit ≠ Neuheit ≠ Neuerung

• This means news or something new. Neuheit is a new design or creation in fashion (haute couture). Neuerung is an innovation.

• This means to be confined, lie in (pregnancy), not to come down.
