ESSENTIAL QUESTION

• How can we use watercolor techniques to portray a particular habitat?

• State Standard: Life Science• 2.3.F.1- Explain that organisms can grow and

survive in many very different habitats

OBJECTIVES

• Students will understand that earth supports many different habitats, each of which has distinct features and distinct plant and animal populations.• Students will create a watercolor painting to

depict one habitat (oceans/coral reefs, artic tundra, tropical rainforests, or savannas/grasslands)• Students will use at least 2 watercolor

techniques in their painting from the following: wet-on-dry, graded wash, lifting wet watercolor, or wax-resist

HABITAT

• Definition:• An environment or area that is inhabit by a

particular species of animal, plant or other type of organism• It is made up of many physical factors: soil,

water source, temperature/climate, and access to sunlight

OCEANS/CORAL REEFS

• Marine Habitats• Coastal (coral reefs) or Open ocean (only 10% of marine

species live here)

• Temperature is affected by currents, geographical location, weather and sunlight (for photosynthesis)

• Coral Reefs• Warm temperatures (tropical)• Plant life: coral, sea grass, sponges, algae• Animals: shrimp, sea turtles, tropical fish, starfish, whitetip reef shark

ARCTIC TUNDRA

• Made up of freezing temperatures • Ice, snow, and dry winds• (permafrost- frozen soil)

• Inhabited by arctic wolves, caribou, brown bears, and the Musk Ox• Plant life: Mosses, low-growing shrubs and

grasses

GRASSLANDS/SAVANNAS

• Dry season during winter• Cheetahs, lions and gazelles have developed

the ability for speed to chase prey/run from predators• Also home to zebras, giraffes and elephants• Plants: Baobab tree, Elephant Grass, Bermuda

Grass

TROPICAL RAINFOREST

• Humid/rain• Has a canopy and forest floor (fertile soil)• 50% of the Earth’s plants and animals reside

here• Spiders, anteaters, jaguars, frogs, sloths,

toucans• Strangler figs, Bengal Bamboo, Kapok Tree

MEDIA/MEDIUM

•Medium is a material used by an artist or designer to create a work• Examples:•Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture•Mixed Media: collage•Multimedia: using more than one medium, visual art

MEDIUM

Today we will be using Watercoloron Drawing paper (medium) using variouswatercolor techniquesincluding crayon for wax resist with our subject Matter being a particular habitat

WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES

• Wet-on-dry• Using a wet brush, dipping it into watercolor,

then painting• Graded wash• Beginning with a liberal amount of paint on a wet brush and then dabbing your brush (after initial paint goes on paper) on a paper towel and adding a little bit of water

WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUES

• Lifting wet watercolor• Blot designs/shapes with tissue, sponge, or paper towels to suck up the wet paint

• Wax Resist• Draw using color crayon of choice (usually white/clear) on paper, then paint over the wax with watercolor and the wax design will stay (resisting the watercolor)

JOHN JAMES AUDUBON

• French-American naturalist painter• 1785-1851• Studied American birds (ornithologist) and

painted them in their natural habitats• Attempted to paint and document all American

birds (many life-sized paintings)• Had great appreciation for wildlife and

conservation efforts• Media used: watercolor, oil paints, gouache,

pencil and pastel sketches, and graphite• Compiled The Birds of America

AUDUBON’S WORK

“Snowy Owl” “Great Blue Heron”

EXAMPLES

•How can we use the medium, watercolor, on thick drawing paper, to portray a particular habitat?
