Warm towels and toasty toes require well-skilled trades and foresight
Most people will say it’s the details that make a room pop.But when it comes time to renovate a bathroom, the details come
later – much later. The tradespeople need to do their thing well before the designer’s final finishes can even be considered.
For example, warm toes in the bathroom happen only when an in-floor heating system is installed before any construction or tiling begins; while multiple shower sprays and wall-mounted faucets need a proper plumbing strategy in order to function and flow properly.
Another skilled tradesperson you’ll want to have on standby is an electrician. Wall sconces and task lighting need expert installation so they’re properly aligned in relation to where mirrors and vanities are located, and they’ll likely be the person who installs that towel warmer too.
Having the foresight in the form of a design plan makes the details come together, so make a designer and skilled tradespeople part of your reno plan.
Since a good bathroom renovation represents one of the home’s best resale investments, we’ve gone all out to generate ideas for your next home upgrade in this issue. Thanks to the many design and reno experts who have generously contributed their experience and know-how, you’ll be well prepared for the challenge.
We always look forward to your feedback, so please write to us!

Great advice from guru of good design! Glen Peloso is so right on about red. I bought a red sofa many years ago that I adore, and to this day it gets all the attention and the compliments from those who visit. Something about its warm colour and texture just makes it a standout piece that pulls the room together in perfectly. J’adore!

bathroom renovating
top 10 tipsby yanic simard
if you have a pink tub and gold antique faucets, it just might be time to renovate and invest in something you’ll actually enjoy using and
admire. Using the “it’s vintage” excuse is getting old, and I can almost guarantee that once the renovation is complete, you’ll ask yourself, “Why didn’t I do that 10 years ago?”
01 importanCe of layout
When homeowners finally decide to renovate their bathroom, I often find that people like to jump the gun and head shopping before coming up with a functional floor plan. The significance of creating a layout that works is paramount – take the time to measure and draw out the space (to scale!) and create a design

bathroom renovating
are you in love with your home but have a hate-on for the kitchen? You’re probably thinking of renovating sometime down the
line, but the thought of it may overwhelm you to the point of wanting to put up the “For Sale” sign, pack your things and move into a home with a brand new kitchen. But before you do that, take a minute to stop and think about it. If you re-design the space yourself it will be your own, created the way you want it. Just about everything is customizable and nothing’s worse then moving into a home where the layout or function of this main room just doesn’t work for you and your
that works; keeping in mind the flow of traffic, having enough space to move around comfortably, the right amount of clearance to open doors and drawers, and the end result in the way everything looks in relation to each other. Manipulating the layout can increase your floor space, but you might also be able to move walls to give yourself even more room. If you have a linen closet next to the bathroom or closet from another room that is on the other side of the wall, you might be able to shorten the closet depth to give you a couple extra square feet for your bathroom. Explore all of your options before beginning work.$$ Saving tip Don’t change the location of the tub and toilet, and you’ll save a bundle of money!
02 rely on the ClassiCs
You can never go wrong if you choose white and chrome finishes and fixtures. TOTO has some beautiful options, and I really like their Aquia and Upton Lines. They make choosing the components for your bathroom easy and stress-free with their coordinating collections. You’ll never have to worry about making sure pieces match or look good together again!
03 the shower & tub
Having both a shower and a tub in your main bathroom is definitely something that you want to think about if you’re planning on selling your home in the future. It’s something that young homeowners with children in mind for their future want. If your bathroom is on the smaller side, combine the shower and tub. Mirolin has the perfect tub for small spaces – it’s 60 inches, smaller than the standard size – called the Azurra Adora. Pair it with the popular rainfall showerhead and a beautiful bathtub waste & overflow drain (OS&B offers drains in many styles and finishes—available through plumbing boutiques and retailers such as The Home Depot) and your house is practically sold!
04 Vanity
Finding a nice vanity with ample storage space can be a tough task. If you’re looking for something that’s good quality at an affordable price, I suggest taking a look at the options from RONBOW. They have several different size options, meaning they will work well whether your space is small or large.
05 sink spaCe
There are so many different shapes and sizes when it comes to sinks – it’s really about finding what is most suitable for you. Make a list of what you’re looking for and take it with you shopping – you might want something deep, round and polished – or shallow, rectangular and matte. Choose your vanity first and bring the measurements with you before going out and making the purchase.

06 durable floorinG
There’s no doubt that the bathroom floor gets a lot, if not the most abuse out of any room in the house. Make sure you choose something that can handle a lot of wear and tear. I like choosing a tile or stone that has the coloration running all throughout it, not just one that has a layer of colour on top. That way it will always look the same even as the surface begins to wear down.
07 mirror art
Choosing a mirror is like choosing the artwork for a room. It’s the finishing touch for the space. The mirror adds the sparkle and reflects the light – the larger the mirror, the larger the impact. Want a designer look? Tile the walls of your bathroom and insert a large-sized mirror to be flush with the tile work. The end result always looks incredible!
08 liGhtinG The light fixture you choose will determine the mood you’re trying to create. Choose a fixture that will emit a lot of bright white light. A bathroom is not an area that needs to be ambient – you’ll want good light for getting ready so keep this in mind when choosing your selection.
09 heated floors
If you’re doing a full bathroom reno and ripping up the floor, why not consider treating yourself by installing a heated floor system? In Canada we have climates that would make a penguin cry so having this feature in the winter is particularly enjoyable! NuHeat is my go-to company for heated floors. With them you can customize the mat to fit the exact measurements of the space so every inch of the floor will give off warmth.

10 time to adjust At the end of the day it’s all about creating a unified look that you’ll be happy to wake up to and come home to every day. Completely transforming your bathroom will be a big change and believe it or not, it will take some getting used to – especially if you change the size and/or the location of the pieces within it. Give yourself four to six weeks to adjust to the new look and really fall in love with your new bathroom.

Bathroom trends to make a splash
THE BATHROOM HAS HAD A LONG HISTORY AND
when you’re at a cottage with no indoor plumbing, you develop a whole new appreciation for that room. Essentially, the elements haven’t changed much over the years – a toilet, a sink, a tub and or shower, some storage. There is no doubt, however, that the way we organize those elements and what’s new in the world of bathrooms evolves year after year.
The basic rules of form following function never change, and it is always important that you create a great plan, for fashion and function purposes. Before you get excited about all the new features that can be incorporated into the bathroom, determine what is most important to you and your family. You may find, for example, that members of your household prefer to shower as opposed to bathe, and as a result, you want to spend the majority of your “trend/ splurge” dollars on the shower.
As a general trend, we are seeing the bathroom being tiled from floor to ceiling, all around the room or
at the very least, a tiled feature wall. In the past, people might have tiled only the walls in the shower and left the rest of the walls painted. But with the increased popularity of fully glassed-in shower stalls in order to keep the room looking as large as possible, it is now much more common to tile the shower stall and then continue that finish straight across the room onto the next wall. This is the less-expensive version of tiling the entire room from top to bottom. There are certainly many interesting damask patterns in tiles that look not unlike wallpapers, but offer more durability.
As many past trends in home design are experiencing a revival, we are again seeing lots of white and grey marble in the bathroom, both in countertops and tiles. Tiles like Carrara marble have made resurgences although this particular material has been around since the construction of St. Marco’s Cathedral in Venice. In the tile department, the sizes of marble tiles have increased dramatically since the last time they were popular. In the past, a six-by-six-inch tile may

GLEN PELOSOGlen Peloso, design editor at Home Décor and Renovations and principal designer of Glen Peloso Interiors, has been designing spaces for commercial, corporate and residential clients for more than 15 years. You’ll recognize Glen as the host of such television design shows as Restaurant Makeover, Take This House & Sell It and Renovate My Wardrobe, to name a few, as well as from speaking engagements at home shows across Canada. glenpelosointeriors.com
have been all the rage, however we now are seeing tile sizes like 12 by 24, 24 by 24 and as large as 36 by 36. The advantage of the larger format is that it allows for a smaller grout line and more tile surface. As I like to say, it used to be “a story about grout” and now the tiles take centre stage.
Underfoot, the shock of bare feet on cold tiles has gone the way of the once-a-week bath – in other words, it’s rare. With companies like NuHeat creating both off-the-shelf products and custom-made heating mats, today’s bathroom floors pamper your feet. The wall-mounted controls allow you to schedule when you want the floor heater to turn on, much like a furnace. You can even heat the stone seating in the shower – now, that’s a hot seat! Combine the heated floor with heated towel warmers, and you may never leave the bathroom.
If it has been some time since you looked at plumbing fixtures, you will be amazed at the structural shapes of tubs, with high backs and lower front edges or a double back with central drain, Japanese-styled soaker tubs, and tubs shaped like a large bowl. When it comes to the toilet, there is everything from basic to
“complete service” with automated lids, heated seats, and a built-in bidet with air-drying and self-flushing function. The only thing it doesn’t do, is get you the paper! Faucets are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes to suit any taste. They are also available in touch-free models for residential applications. Electronics have also made their way into the room, with televisions set behind mirrors and surround sound installed in the ceiling scape.
Try not to be overwhelmed with the vast selection, and when you’re ready to shop, head out with a plan and a budget in mind. Finally, the room is there to house a toilet and to allow you to get ready in the morning. Beyond that, it’s all the luxury you want. The trends in these kinds of rooms tend to last for many years before they change, so feel free to treat yourself to a few fun things but never lose sight of what your budget is.
Happy showers!
TILES LIKE CARRARA MARBLE HAVE MADE RESURGENCES ALTHOUGH THIS PARTICULAR MATERIAL HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE CONSTRUCTION OF ST. MARCO’S CATHEDRAL IN VENICE.

RENOREADY
Q What do I need to do to prepare for my bathroom renovation?A Every successful project begins with a plan. Begin by designing the concept and consider how the design will interact with the location of plumbing, HVAC and structural elements in the room. If you need to move the location of mechanical and structural elements in order to accommodate the new design, you will require a building permit from the city.
Once you have worked out the basic design layout, you will need to assign a budget for the project. The cost will include the materials, labour and any associated administrative fees (i.e., permit costs). It is prudent to ensure that “special order” materials chosen for the project be ordered from your supplier in a timely manner as to not impede the progress of work.
If you intend on hiring a contractor/designer for the project, ensure you are provided with the details pertaining to budget, schedule, scope of work and establish suitable work hours and particulars of site-related activity. Also, make arrangements to use another bathroom for the duration of the project.
Q What are the top bathroom reno pitfalls? What can homeowners do to ensure a smooth reno?A In construction, as with most other industries, “pitfalls” are most often encountered by inexperienced practitioners and weekend warriors. In the greater scope of things, a bathroom renovation is typically very straightforward and a seasoned practitioner can work out all the details and steps within minutes. The safest bet is to first know what you want, be able
to communicate your vision and hire a professional to do the work. Visit renomark.ca to find a list of qualified contractors in your area.
Q How can a homeowner minimize the inconvenience of living through a bathroom reno? A Try not to be there, or schedule the work for a time when you plan on being on vacation. If you dohave to live through it, realizethat it will be loud, dusty, dirty, and a disturbance to your regular routine. Professional contractors realize the psychological and sometimes emotional impact thata typical renovation can have on homeowners and make a great effort to minimize that impact. Ask your contractor what measures they take to protect your home and minimize the inconveniences of the renovation. Voice your concerns and don’t assume that the contractor should have known. Everything from dust protection and hours of work, all the way down to where they can and cannot cut their materials should be discussed.

036-Reno Ready-Peter Khatami-March12_SL.indd 36 2/21/12 4:56:11 PM
In late January, the federal government
of Canada announced that it will prematurely end the ecoENERGY Retrofit program – a $400-million initiative offering homeowners up to $5,000 to undergo a green renovation.
At first, I felt upset as I thought of all the renovators who depended on this program to help sell the idea of a green renovation – a challenging task, even when dealing with environmentally conscious clients. But later, I managed to look at the situation from a more positive side.
Since the program’s inception in 2007, about 250,000 homeowners have taken advantage of the rebate and improved the energy efficiency of their homes, according to Natural Resources Minister, Joe Oliver. That’s quite the accomplishment, especially considering the tough economic times we experienced in the 2008–2009 stretch, particularly in the building and renovating industries.
To me, this speaks volumes about the way homeowners in this country view energy efficiency.
“We used it on the lion share of the projects that we do,” said Brendan Charters of Eurodale Developments, a RenoMark™ renovator and BILD’s 2011 Renovator of the Year. “Most of our larger renovations involve eco-energy type upgrades. It’s not just finishes and the sexy stuff you see on the outside. It really becomes something that’s paramount in the larger renovation discussion and it’s because of the success of programs like this. It’s part of every discussion we have with every homeowner.”
I’ve written before that one of the biggest challenges communicated to me by our members is selling green features over pretty upgrades. Charters explained that this program made that process a lot easier as homeowners were excited to be rewarded for thinking green.
“When they see that they get some money back, homeowners spent more time and energy and focus on all their options versus spending money to get that countertop,” he said.
Would it still have the same effect if the program didn’t have an expiry date?
I like to think that people enjoy taking advantage of limited-time offers. There is a sense of accomplishment when you beat the deadline and get a great deal. Perhaps this was the push that incited a quarter-million people to retrofit their homes over the last five years. According to the program’s website, the average federal grant has been about $1,400 per dwelling.
Homeowners currently registered can receive post-retrofit evaluations and apply for grants until June 30, 2012. Just be sure to have your retrofit completed by March 31.
Here at BILD, we are strong supporters of Green building and are always looking for ways to educate our members and the consumers about the benefits of energy efficiency in the home. Our Association is currently involved with several green initiatives, including LEEP-TAP, microFIT, a Green Leadership Committee and an annual Green Builder of the Year award in both lowrise and highrise categories.
“Every day we pull up to the pump and complain about the price of gas, but you’re spending a lot more heating your home,” Charters said, adding that while there’s not much you can do to improve energy consumption in your vehicle, there are a number of options available for homeowners.
I trust that our government partners have another great idea lined up to help home builders and homebuyers make the GTA a greener place to live, work and play.

The soft folds of Romans, light and view control of a blind, raises up out of the way like a shade. The best of 3 in 1 treatment.

Looking at wall décor, I’m starting to see more than your typical pretty pictures, matted and framed and formally hung.
Pieces don’t just quietly cling to the walls, they’re becoming tactile, dimensional – coming off the wall and into the room – and I love the interaction! Sculptural elements are created through
carving, printing on glass and metalwork – or through mixing media with unconventional elements, like hardware. Artists are also layering text onto the canvas, allowing pieces to tell their story.
Try pieces like these to make your walls a little more interactive!
