Department of Medicinal Chemistry
Welcome to the Department of Medicinal Chemistry
Drug discovery and development maintains its role in traditional drug therapy, but its
application to pharmacogenomics may become the treatment modality of the future. The scope
of knowledge in organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology and therapeutics allows
scientists to make generalizations connecting the physico-chemical properties of small organic
molecules and peptides to the receptor and biochemical properties of living systems.
Therefore, these generalizations, validated by repetitive examples, emerge in time as principles
of drug discovery and drug mechanisms, principles that describe the structural relationships
between diverse organic molecules and the bimolecular functions that predict their
mechanisms toward controlling diseases.
The graduate programs of medicinal chemistry department are regulated to train outstanding
medicinal chemists who will be able to work in research and teaching areas as well as in
pharmaceutical technologies and industries.
Message of the Head of Department
From the historical aspect, medicinal chemistry is focused on organic synthetic chemistry with
the broad goals of drug discovery and optimization. Since the past few decades, medicinal
chemistry has been conducted to consider the physical, computational, analytical, and chemical
properties of drugs and drug targets. These innovations include enzyme chemistry, protein
design, protein structure prediction, proteomics and chemical biology that bring about the
accelerated discovery of new drugs. This approach in modern medicinal chemistry allows for
the elucidation of disease pathways and drug actions mechanisms.
From several years ago, the department has tried to orient its educational and research
programs to modern medicinal chemistry. Therefore, the aim of research programs has been
extended in two known drug discovery areas, including traditional and modern drug discovery.
The scopes of both fields are sufficiently broad to give students with different science
backgrounds an interesting and challenging program of study. Organic synthesis of medicinal
agents, computational chemistry, structural biology, cell and molecular biology, drug
metabolism, natural products chemistry, bio-analytical and molecular toxicology, biological
evaluation and animal models are areas of active interest. Our current research focus is cancer,
inflammation disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and antifungal and antimicrobial
compounds, hypertension and diabetes diseases. The department has excellent collaborations
with other research groups in the faculty and university, in order to research in the major areas
of medicinal Chemistry and receive related research support.
About the Department of Medicinal Chemistry
The department of Medicinal Chemistry is one the oldest departments in the Faculty of
Pharmacy, established in 1963. All the undergraduate students are required to pass 31 units in
the Department of Medicinal Chemistry as theoretical and practical courses. Students have
access to a wide range of modern instrumentation and equipment used in the design and
synthesis of new therapeutic agents, both within the department’s facilities and nearby
laboratories of our research centers. Various research groups actively collaborate with groups
from departments such as biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, and pharmacology. The
scope of this field is sufficiently broad to give students with many different science backgrounds
a rewarding and challenging program of study.
Our research focus is on the following areas:
Design, and synthesis of new medicinal agents
Investigation of biological activity of new medicinal agents
Structural elucidation of active natural compounds
Improvement of structures of existing drugs by molecular modification
Development of new analytical methods for the determination of drug in formulation and
different complex matrix
Broad research projects introduce new analytical methods for the determination of drugs in
pharmaceutical dosage forms and biological fluids.
Current major department research areas includes:
-Discovery and validation of new anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-Alzheimer and
anti-hypertension drugs.
-Molecular modeling and simulation of bimolecular structure, dynamics and interactions.
-Separation and identification of natural products
-Application of Mass, NMR and other spectrophotometric techniques to the elucidation of
natural products and small molecular structures.
-Synthesis and evaluation of novel biopolymers for site-targeted drug delivery.
-Synthesis of new chromogenic and fluorogenic markers for the analysis of elements and drugs.
-The development of new analytical methods for the determination and identification of
chemical compounds and drugs in different matrices.

Mission and Vision
Mission
As defined by IUPAK, medicinal chemistry is a chemistry-based discipline, involving the aspects
of biological, medical, and pharmaceutical sciences. Our mission is to educate and train
scientists to achieve excellence in medicinal chemistry for the improvement of human health. In
this regard our research focused on the invention, discovery, design, identification, and
preparation of biologically active compounds, the study of their metabolisms, interpretation of
their modes of action in the molecular level and construction of structure-activity relationships
(SAR), the relationship between chemical structure and pharmacological activity for a series of
compounds.
The major mission of the Medicinal Chemistry Department is to create new knowledge to
discover and develop new pharmaceutical drugs, paralleled with general aims of the faculty.
Since twenty years ago, the mission has developed to conduct basic research in chemistry and
biological chemistry related to drug discovery, to teach these principles in the professional and
graduate programs and to provide service to the scientific community. Areas of active interest
include drug discovery, organic synthesis of medicinal agents, natural product chemistry, pro-
drugs, molecular modeling, and pharmaceutical analysis.
Vision
The objective of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry is to raise and maintain the standing of
Tehran University of Medical Sciences in academic circles, both domestically and internationally
in applied fields, in terms of basic medicinal chemistry and analytical skills and synthesis.
