REPORT
ON
GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS
ON PROPERTY OF
WESTERN MINES LIMITED
(GRIDS No. 6 and 27)
REAUME TOWNSHIP
PORCUPINE MINING DIVISION
ONTARIO
INTRODUCTION
Ground geophysical work consisting of horizontal loop electro
magnetic surveys, vertical loop electromagnetic surveys and magnet
ometer surveys was carried out for Western Mines Limited over two
claim groups located in Reaume Township, Porcupine Mining Division,
Ontario, during December, 1977.
The following report and accompanying map describes the results
of the surveys and gives a geological interpretation of the results.
t
PROPERTY AND LOCATION
The property surveyed includes grid area No. 27, consisting of
a contiguous group of 5 claims and grid area No. 6 , where several
. 2 -
detail lines were surveyed to detail conductive zones indicated
in a previous survey. The grids are located in the Northeast
quarter of Reaume Township, approximately 13 miles south of the
Town of Cochrane. Access is by snowmobile or muskeg tractor from
the Reaume Lake logging road.
The claims are shown on the accompanying location sketches
and are more precisely described as follows:-
Grid No. 6
P 442507 P 442508 P 442518 P 442519
Grid No.27
P 499313 P 499314 P 499315 P 499316 P 499317
SURVEY METHOD AND PRESENTATION OF RESULTS
The horizontal loop electromagnetic survey employed the Apex
Maxmin II electromagnetic instrument operated in the horizontal
coil configuration with a transmitter-receiver separation of 600
feet. Readings of the in-phase and out-of-phase components of the i
resultant field at 444 Hz were recorded at station intervals of
100 feet, along grid lines cut at 400 feet spacings.
The ideal profile of readings over a conductive body forms
a curve with positive shoulders as the conductor is approached and
"i
a negative trough over the conductor. Both the in-phase and out-
of-phase readings show the same general curve except in areas of
deep conductive overburden, where phase rotation phenomena can
alter the ideal type curve. The ratio between the in-phase and
out-of-phase response over a conductive zone provides an indica
tion of the conductivity of the underlying body, as does conduct
ivity thickness determinations (mhos). In general, the ratio of
the in-phase to out-of-phase increases as the conductivity of the
underlying body increases and a ratio of 1.0 or greater is con
sidered to be typical of the response generated over a massive
sulfide body.
The vertical loop electromaqnetic survey was conducted as an
aid to interpretation of conductors indicated by the horizontal
loop survey. In general, this survey was carried out only in the
immediate vicinity of the conductor axes. The survey employed
the McPhar R.E.M., vertical loop system with readings taken at
100 feet intervals over the horizontal loop indicated conductors.
Readings of the tilt of the major axis of the ellipse of polar
ization were recorded in degrees at 1000 Hz and 5000 Hz. In
general, the resultant field over a conductor dips below the
reference line on one side of a conductor and above the reference
line on the other. The conductor axis is located below the in
flexion point, where the tilt angle is zero.
The survey was carried out using the fixed transmitter tech-
- 4 -
nique with the transmitter set up over the conductor axis in order
to more precisely outline the conductors.
The magnetometer survey employed the McPhar M700 Fluxgate
magnetometer measuring the variations of the vertical component
of the earth's magnetic field. The magnetic responses, as plotted
on the accompanying map, are corrected for diurnal variation and
instrument drift, and are contoured at appropriate intervals.
Magnetic base stations were set up at appropriate locations as
shown on the accompanying map. For the purpose of diurnal and
drift corrections, base station readings were used as reference
readings at not greater than one hour time intervals during the
survey.
The surveys are plotted on separate maps at a scale of l
inch to 200 feet.
INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS OF GEOPHYSICAL PROGRAM
Grid No. 6 Area
The horizontal loop electromagnetic survey over
grid No. 6 area, shows long positive approach
effects on all lines surveyed. In the author's
opinion, this is due to nearby conductive zonest
with a strike nearly paralleling the present north-
south grid lines. In order to outline these probable'
conductors it would be necessary to establish a new
grid. Based on the present limited results, the new
grid lines should be established in a northeasterly
direction.
Grid No. 27 Area
The horizontal loop electromagnetic survey, as
plotted on the accompanying map outlines 5 conductors
(conductors 1,2,3,4 and 5) trending in a general east-
west direction. None of the conductors show correlation
with magnetic anomalies. The conductors are weak and
display poor conductivity consistent with conductors
caused by the edges of conductive overburden deposits
along buried ridges. In general, the results of the
vertical loop survey confirm the presence of the poorly
conductive zones outlined by the horizontal loop method
but the vertical loop results are somewhat cluttered.
Horizontal loop conductor No. 4, is not confirmed by
the vertical loop survey but a vertical loop conductor
axes is outlined approximately 200 feet south of horizon
tal loop conductor No. 4.
