Make the RIGHT CHOICES
for our childrenMake the
RIGHT CHOICESfor our children
Mayor Bloombergtook steps last year to attract certified teachers to our schools. That was the right choice, and it paid off with higher student test scores.
But recently, the Mayor and the Chancellor have lost sight of the mostimportant issues facing our kids. They need to put first things first:
1. Make smaller classes a primary aim. Since the administration won’t do it, the UFT – along with parents and community groups across the city– is helping lead a campaign for a City Charter amendment requiring it.
2. Turn around failing schools. Expand, don’t eliminate the Chancellor’sDistrict, with its proven record of raising test scores, so that parentscan have good neighborhood schools for their children.
3. Make schools a safe environment in which to learn. Establishadequate off-campus sites for disruptive students.
4. Make the school system open, accountable and efficient, with lessbureaucracy and more focus on the classroom.
5. Urge Chancellor Klein and his deputies to gain a betterunderstanding of our schools by teaching once a week.
Teachers know what works. We hope the Mayor and Chancellor will startworking more with teachers and parents to put first things first.
If you share our concerns, let us know. Go to www.uft.org
United Federation of Teachers • Randi Weingarten, President
There are eight areas where teachers believe MayorBloomberg’s and Chancellor Klein’s “Children First” programhas serious shortcomings. Their program:
• offers no long-term plan to reduce class size in all grades.
• adds to the bureaucracy by hiring high-paid executives whilefiring classroom staff.
• has not fulfilled its promise to improve student discipline. In fact, serious incidents against teachers are up.
• forces teachers to teach unproven programs withoutsufficient consultation, training or materials.
• doesn’t allow teachers flexibility or creativity in theclassroom to deal with kids on a one-on-one basis.
• shortchanges special needs students by failing to commitresources.
• pays lip service to parent involvement but ignores whatparents really need.
• eliminates the Chancellor’s District, a highly successfulmodel for turning around struggling schools.
